after playing the lovely festival of komasket in bc, i realize once again how awkward i am socially before and after shows, and how i must come across as such a snob.

i have always been critisized for being a snob, long before i was playing music, but certainly it accelerated once i started my career as an artist who can be seen on stage. i have a modigliani face and body of sorts, long and exxagerated, and it can look as though i am moody and sullen even when i am just feeling shy.

when i used to be into stencil art and street art, being introverted meant nothing, because my focus as an artist was social commentary thru graffitti, and i was always alone.

i try really hard to be extroverted once i get off stage, but truthfully it is not my forte, and as i grow in my career i can see this is a detriment.  my peers who are socially more adept and at ease with accolades (tegan and sara, nelly furtado) have grown to LOVE being on stage and LOVE public interaction, press, photos, bloggin etc and you can see the benefits of such social graces by their career arc --- UP UP UP!!!

i guess i am trying to apologize to all those people i snub when you try and talk to me. please know that if i can't say a word or can't smile or try and sneak away, you didn't do anything wrong.  i really love people from a compassionate perspective, and see the beauty in my job as a writer and am in awe of you when i am playing my songs for you on stage, but after that... well my legs ache and i feel spent and i feel exposed and the accolades feel fake because so many of you see 'something special' in me that i feel is more a part of my humanity than my artistry.  and in that sense we are all identical on a genetic fundamental level....

so when youse guys come up to me (real ontario accent needed there, "youse guys") and tell me you loved my show, if i snub you and get really shy and look like a deer in the headlights, please just know i appreciate my job as a songwriter, and the thing i want most is to see everyone shine hard on each other.

if i'm not shining and am retreating, it's cuz i'm thin, tired, shy and sensitive... so sorry, i wish i was a stronger person for you all!

well this is a little bit of a rant but it needs to be said out loud:

WHY IS IT ALWAYS ASSUMED THAT EVERYONE NEEDS/WANTS TO HAVE CHILDREN??

i can't tell you how many people ask me and my husband "when are you going to have kids" as if the natural evolution of every relationship is children.  my husband and i don't have a conventional marriage.  we don't believe in ALOT of the standards around marriage set forth in countless movies and books, so why would just suddenly make babies?

people, we are OVERPOPULATED.  has anyone noticed?  and what if it indeed takes a community to raise a child, as in:  the more aunties and uncles out there without children the more available we are to be there for overworked parents striving to meet some nuclear family status quo bullshit that keeps them encased in this DUO that exhausts them both?

what is the point of living is to love all human beings as though they are family?  what if HAVING children is indeed the 'selfish' choice --- there are 26,000 native children in canada without homes.  look outside the native community and the numbers are even larger.  there are alot of kids that need homes... why are people so desperate to make blood copies of themselves when they could help kids out that are struggling to be adopted?

i don't know why it is considered appropriate to pry into the personal lives of a couple just because they are married.  i don't say to married people with children, "oh... you had kids.... what a shame .... when do you plan on making something for other people than your own nuclear family?? you know, like art? something to clarify your world view to give strength to strangers?"

almost every media form from gossip rags to hollywood movies emphasizes the need to bear children and indeed glamorizes it to the point that lord knows how many bearers of twins and triplets have taken massive amounts of in vitro drugs just to concieve, but aren't there other choices out there to show love for the planet than multiplying?

ok ok...

see, i got the facebook bug.  you can blame hussain for that.  he popped my myspace cherry and from then on, well... i kinda forgot myspace exists.  bad bad BAD kinnie.

i will i swear to god, or goddess, try and get back intot he myspace vibe... i can see people still use this site so... ME WANT USE TOO!!

in the meantime, i have good news:
i DO have a new record coming out in feb.2010.  it is coming out thru LAST GANG LABELS, the distribution side of LAST GANG RECORDS.  this is the same way Lights! came out, and it is kinda new skool negotiations where artists drive the project with a powerful label infrastructure in place.  the last gang team is pretty hella dope, and these people have acts like METRIC, DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE, TERRI LYNN, and DEATH FROM ABOVE in their roster.

for the record, my new album is called, "a different day".... and is all about love.  not just romantic love, but LOVE and the ethic of love --- as in, non-linear thinking that evolves constantly and is not result-oriented.  non-linear, or indigenous thinking, is about constant negotiation, and my feelings are that if people weren't so focussed on WINNING or BEING RIGHT that we would listen to eachother more carefully without the goal of proving eachother wrong.  this is a love perspective.

i also have a new management team on board, BEDLAM MUSIC MANAGEMENT.  thanks to KAREN BLISS, i showcased successfully in TO and bedlam got it.  they have THE ARKELLS, ALEXISONFIRE, BEDOIN SOUND CLASH.  they are cool, laid back and to the point, something very crucial in good communication.  no bullshit, straight up, and handsome hand shakes.

lastly, my man and i are moving to TO!! we are in the move right now... and will be located officially there by sept/oct 2009, ready to play hard ball with movie and TV makers (my man is stuart pierre, he won the AMERICAN INDIGENOUS IMAGE AWARD 2009 for BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR) and music heavy hitters worldwide.

i love you vancouver, but i love TO and the east in equal proportions... so any of you 'awwwww... toronto is so lame man... yo nobody even talks to eachother there' naysayers can suck my fine ass, CUZ LIFE IS WHAT YOU MAKE IT AND GOOD PEOPLE EXIST EVERYWHERE YOU JUST GOTTA BE OPEN.

i realize it is soooooo vancouver to diss TO and sooooo TO to diss vancouver but honetly i think everywhere is beautiful and i have travelled all over the world and think this globe is gorgeous... so please, no "you will hate TO" letters yo.  we go with open heart.

well i have completely fallen out of routine w this site, and i apologize to all my lovelies who say, "yo KINNIE!!!! what and when are you doing music stuff??"

here is the lowdown:

i have just made a new EP w chin injeti. it comes out of the illustrious 'hastings set', and we work under the laurels of Haddock entertainment. we are ninjas, soldiers, and masterminds. we eat fries, veggie food, ital and MEAT.

the record is a series of love songs, mostly this kinda mellow sexy sade meets edie brickell in rogue wave's studio. it's my major departure from hip hop, but i am still doing hip hop on the side.

hip hop rules and i love to rhyme and write beats, but cocaine has cast its spell on too many rappers, and the era of porn and bikini contests has tainted story telling past the origins of real love and funny spits......

i DO have a SIDE hip hop project brewing..... all about sex from a woman's perspective.... becasue let's face it, how many times can we hear a rapper talk about getting their dick sucked and getting the bitch to go low before we need change.

woot!

on a final note, i am producing my first record of someone else's stuff --- namely DIGGING ROOTS, my sweet extended family, in barrie. i LOVE PRODUCING.
