Went out goose hunting Sat am and didn't get athing. The geese wouldn't land in our field. They kept landing in the field next door. Our field wasn't big enough for them I guess. I got Nellie this day and told her yesterday that I would get her a goose since I got Norman one and boy did I ever lie to her. Just got to take prego pictures of her and no birds. My friend Lynne did text me a picture of her 3 dogs and her pheasant she got with the caption "one less for JoAnn", yes she went to my secret hunting ground and shot a pheasant! Good for her, too bad I wasn't with her and it would of been more fun. Next time!

This morning the dogs and I went chasing pheasants again. Didn't have any luck today, so this afternoon we took the dogs goose hunting. We set up our spread in the corn field and waited. Norman by my side and Nellie by John's side. A couple small groups flew in but I thought they were too far away to shoot so I didn't. They never circled so we didn't get those. The other groups that would come near would fly and lite in the field across the road from us. Our small spread couldn't compete with the live ones across the road. So John went walking over there to chase them out of there and while doing so a group of geese came through and there were 2 low flyers so while still laying down and shooting over my left shoulder to the back of me I managed to get one of the low flyers. Norman didn't know where it fell since he was looking ahead of him so I turned him around and said back and off he went to retrieve my bird. Once again I didn't make a stone cold killing shot and the goose was still alive so twice while we were hunting the goose got up and tryed to walk off and Norman had to go after it and bring it back. He thinks that is just too much fun. We'll try again tomorrow am.

Today was a fun day when all was said and done. Went hunting again, the dogs and I walked through one field not flushing up anything so we went to the back field and they were hot on a track but never came up with anything. While we were back there I heard a rooster cackle so tried to see where it was going and there was too many willow trees in the way to see anything but I heard the vacinity it was at so off we went to find it. While we were in the spot I thought it landed I heard a cackle again and looked up and 2 roosters went flying up and landed in the middle of the field I was just in. So off we went. I told the dogs to hunt em up and off they went and flushed up one, boom got it and Norman went after it then Nellie flushed up the other one and boom got it and Nellie went off and retrieved that one. Done in no time and each dog actually got their own so Norman didn't have to put up with Nellie stealing his bird. Fun day for all!

Today we went pheasant hunting again but instead of getting any pheasants we got a coon. Nellie was the retriever of the day when she ran out there and stole it from Norman once again and brought it back to me. We'll try the pheasants tomorrow again.

We just got to the spot where we were going to hunt and a couple of hunters were walking down the road. They stop by us and told us that they had hit one and it landed in the brush pile on the other side of the road and they didn't have a dog and they couldn't find it on their own. They told us to take our dogs down there and see if they could find it. We told them that they should come with us and they could get their bird, they didn't want to so off we went. We walked the dogs in the brush and told them to hunt it up and away they went. After walking alittle ways Norman popped out of the brush with the live pheasant. It was very much a live, possibly just a broken wing so he couldn't fly but he could still run. Norman dropped him and off he went but it wasn't long before Norman grabbed him again and brought him back to me. So the count is now dogs 1.

John had off today so since it was too windy and wind was wrong for bowhunting we took the dogs pheasant hunting. Norman flushed one up out of the short grass pretty much the same place as yesterday. I wasn't ready for it and by the time I caught up with it I missed. We went after it but couldn't kick it up again. On the way back to the truck we spoted one and went after that one. Nellie flushed that one up and John and I shot at the same time and got it. Nellie made the retrieve. Pretty good for a pregnant mama. Go Nellie!

Took Norman and Nellie pheasant once again and we got the job done in 1/2 hr. Norman was the dog of the day today. Just started walking next to a corn field and he flushed up a rooster, I wasn't prepared and he flushed it out of the standing corn it cleared the corn by inches and I shot and missed and gave it another one and hit it. I swear it had to be a 50 yrd shot. I didn't know where the dogs were or if they were going to find it in the corn and low and behold Norman came trucking back with it. We proceeded to go around the corn field and we were on the home stretch and walking through short canary grass Norman was at my side and he stopped and pounced, me being the dumbass I am thought "huh, he must have a mouse" he pounced again and up went a pheasant not 2 feet from me. I was a decent shot and got him also so off to the truck we went. In the one photo Norman is grinning since he got both of them but he was nice enough to let Nellie share in the picture taking.

Happy 9th Birthday Norman!

MY HEART BELONGS TO A CHESAPEAKE BAY RETRIEVER

A rough and ready sporting dog,
With loyal, loving ways-
My Chesapeake Bay Retriever
Puts sunshine in my days.

A dog that's sure to follow its nose,
Until the chase is done.
When that pup looked up at me,
I knew my heart was won.

Roaming happily by my side,
Or resting at my feet-
My Chesapeake Bay Retriever
Makes my life complete.

Norman, you make my life complete. You are my soulmate....my best friend!
I asked God for a best friend and he gave me Norman.
