.. | | .. | | | Voyage of the Shannon | | | ..
Aloha friends and family,
This year, I am participating in the Great Aloha Run, an 8.2 mile race along the south shore of O'ahu, to raise money for a sailing voyage that friends of mine are undertaking this summer. They are working for Reach The World ( www.reachtheworld.org), a non-profit organization
that utilizes the firsthand experiences of travelers to link underprivileged classrooms to diverse cultures and ecosystems around the globe.
In June, Kevin O'Brien, Christina Hoe, Ken Bwy, and Alina Madadi Bwy will embark on a six month voyage aboard the "Shannon," a 36 foot Union cutter-rigged sailboat. They will sail from Honolulu, Hawaii to Dunedin, New Zealand, exploring the islands of Polynesia and Melanesia along the way. Each week, the crew will upload photo content, personal anecdotes, and field notes via satellite phone to Reach the World's interactive website, enriching existing curriculum and engaging students' curiosity. The Voyage of the Shannon shares Reach the World's mission to provide students with the knowledge, attitudes, values and thinking skills needed for responsible global citizenship. Because of this journey, children who may otherwise never have an opportunity to leave their neighborhood will be connected to the ocean wilderness and the cultures of the South Pacific, developing a deep sense of wonderment and love for our precious planet, and an urgency to protect it.
My goal is to raise $250 in pledges to support Reach The World's Voyage of the Shannon. This money will go towards safety gear, provisions, visas and permits, and media and communications equipment for classroom correspondence. You can help support my fundraising efforts by going to www.reachtheworld.org. At the very top of the page is a link that reads, "click here to support Reach The World." This will take you to a page where you can enter the amount you want to donate (Remember: every little bit helps!!!). Once you've entered a dollar amount, click "donate." Sometimes this page is a bit slow to load. As you fill in the rest of the information, please be sure to write "Voyage of the Shannon in honor of (insert your name)" in the description field on the credit card processing form.
I will keep you posted as to my training progress for the upcoming race. And if you remember a similar session in school called "Voyage of the Mimi" then you'll understand why I'm trying to help, especially since it inspired me in my current profession. Wish me luck and stay tuned for more updates about The Voyage of the Shannon!
Thank you! Kevin

So it's that time of year again and off to sea I go. Where to this time...? Well I'll tell ya. The wide open spaces of the Pacific Remote Islands aka the middle of nowhere. You've probably never heard of them and unless you use google earth to look them up you won't know much else about them. We left aboard our 250' research vessel the Hi'ialakai with 22 scientists and 24 ships crew in destination to remote coral reef environments that need our monitoring and research in order to survive... or well at least to be looked at and we check out amazing reefs. I'll be chasing big fish and counting them- god I love my job! We'll be gone until April but will have internet until then so keep in touch as it can get incredibly boring during transit time. Screw you Jeff Probst. And if you're really interested in partying you can meet us at our in-ports in American Samoa (write for days) Later Kids. The Islands we'll be at are: Johnston Atoll Howland and Baker Islands American Samoa (Tutuilla, Manua Islands, Swain's, Rose Atoll) Jarvis Island
Palmyra Atoll Kingman Reef

So for those few who knew, I was in town for 10 days but am leaving again tomorrow. I apologize for the lack of my attention to my friends but i"ve been rather busy and stressed. All shall be well and I'm looking forward to getting back out there. An update for everyone... I'm still working in Hawaii for a Marine Debris project (a glorified ocean garbage man). I spend my life cleaning the reefs of Papahanamokuakea Marine National Monument of derelict fishing gear (nets). There's a lot and we bring it back to Honolulu to be chopped, recycled and burned for energy. My team and I live aboard large vessels that we deploy our small boats from to transit into atolls and shallow reef areas to free dive for the debris. We get to be dragged through the water behind our boats (shark bait) looking for the nets. It's long and often hard days but rewarding as we bring back tons of debris from a pristine environment. The benefits are that we get to dive where very very few people have and see amazing things. (Keep checking my pictures) The downside is our lowered social lives for months at a time, that is typically rendered by debauchery our first nights home. ( do try to keep up if you can- we have buried many people trying) It's a challenge since we obey federal SAD rules (no Sex, no Alcohol and no Drugs) while at sea. Our vessel, the Oscar Elton Sette is rather plush though with a small gym, excellent meals, cozy racks and movie rooms. Typically we have the internet to keep us entertained, so please write often for my entertainment, even if it's just ramblings. I might not be able to reply right away but reading them makes the days go by. http://www.mcbi.org/what/what_images/nwhimap.jpg Read more at http://www.mcbi.org/what/nwhi.htm My next cruise will be aboard the USCG vessel Kukui aiding them as guides and representatives to Maro Reef in the monument (aka Northwestern Hawaiian Islands). It's my first trip there and it's supposed to be beautiful yet hazardous. It happens to be sharky (not Oahu style sharky, but actually really sharky), a pain for navigation, subject to getting housed by weather and full of wicked tide and current changes. I'm stoked, so wish us luck. I won't have my usually email or myspace to check but keep em coming anyway. After 3 weeks there I will be dropped off on a tiny little place called Tern Island to await with another buddy for getting picked up by the Sette to do more work at French Frigate Shoals for another 3 weeks. I've been here and found it to be gorgeous in some sites and absolutely crap in others. A quick return (6 days) to Honolulu in October for some resupply, r&r and what will be one hell of a wedding (luv ya Gretch & Aaron). Dan your couch is waiting for ya. Then one last month back out to sea to Pearl & Hermes Atoll yet again and then off to the convergent zone... what's that? Oh it's just a bit further North in the middle of the Pacific Ocean where there is... well... nothing. Currents converge here and we hope to do some experimental flights with an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (like the military has). It will be different and interesting but I just want to get in the water and see some pelagics. So in summation I will be gone for Sept & Oct then home in November and will be looking forward to hearing from you all while I'm out there. So please feel free to inquire of our adventures as I'll be all to willing to keep in touch with all of you. Be good and take care of one another. Slainte chugat, Kevin

What's your life soundtrack? This is pretty fun, just follow the rules. No cheating! So, here's how it works: 1. Open your library (iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, iPod, etc) 2. Put it on shuffle 3. Press play 4. For every question, type the song that's playing 5. When you go to a new question, press the next button 6. Don't lie and try to pretend you're cool... Opening credits: "Boxing" – Ben Folds Five (this things freaky) Waking up: "Tundra/Desert" – Modest Mouse (well sounds like me first thing in the morning) First day of school: "Ziggy Stardust" – David Bowie (I did day dream for most of my academic career, but not about David Bowie... "making love with his ego...") Falling in Love "Empty Promises" – Hatebreed (Wow, this might not help get me a girlfriend huh, maybe this was my fight song) Fight Song: "Do it for free" – G. Love & Special Sauce (yep these two got switched) Breaking Up: "Jezebel" – 10,000 Maniacs (that'll do. "i feel like a big fool breaking your heart") Prom: "Hurt" – Johnny Cash (this thing is consistantly off by one- better Life than Prom. went to 7 and 12 Homecomings. I hate tuxes) Life: "Stand next to your fire" – Jimi Hendrix (this one sums it up pretty well) Driving: "The Man Who Would be King" – The Libertines (I am the King so get out the way bitch) Flashback: "Farewell Ride" – Beck (It's a chain reaction, YEAH!.) Getting back together: "Black Country Woman" – Led Zeppelin ("hey hey mama what's the matter hear?" perfect) Wedding: "Gimme Some Lovin" – G. Love & Special Sauce (ah right ) Party: "Izzo/In the End" – Jay-Z/Linkin Park ("...you could be anywhere in the world but your here with us..." God Damn Right!!) Birth of a Child: "Under Pressure" –David Bowie/Queen (good one.) Death scene: "Useless" – Depeche Mode (aren't we all. "well it's about time. it's begining to hurt... just what is it all...") Funeral song: "So Fresh & So Clean" – Outkast ("ain't nobody dope as me. i'm just so fresh and so clean. don't you think i'm so sexy?") Ending credits: "Halo" – Foo Fighters (that's a great way to finish- i'll go out that way.) Fun Thanks E

Well it's that time of year for me again. I'll be heading out to sea for my 'field' season. For those who know it'll be about six weeks and for those who don't- I work as a diver for the Coral Reef Ecosystems Division of NOAA. We conduct many different research areas of the US reefs in the Pacific. These trips will be of the Main Hawaiian Islands...

and later of the North West Hawaiian Islands (the area Bush just made into a Monument). Primarily at Pearl & Hermes Atoll ( the same place I was shipwrecked on- seriously) and Kure Atoll.

I live off a large support vessel (~250 ft) that can deploy our smaller work vessels (19 ft). I'll be able to keep in touch with shiboard emails to some but will be out of touch with everyone else until sept 14th. So enjoy the rest of your summer and i'll be back soon. Take care and give me plenty to read for when I get home.

The remarks about Tom Cruise has inspired a search for the greatest 'little peole' athlethes and sporting events. I really do admire these guys. I'm 6'5'' and wish I had half the athletic ability they do. If your offended by the term 'midget' I apologize but that's what most of these were found under so stop being so freakin PC. I'm the Timmothy Treadwell of Midget fans. Little people rule!
Midget Basketball- This one should be on ESPN 8 the ocho!
The worst part about this event is the fact that they're 1/8th my size but they can come closer to dunking that I can.
Midget Wrestling rocks!
Who hasn't seen such a great event? If you think these guys can't hold their own challange em. I dare you... but make sure your people are there cause you've gotta have a witness. I think Tom Cruise should star as a wrestler in his next movie.
Midget Sports Fan- This is what I'd look like if I were a little person. Not everyone can make the team but the fans are what makes the game. Here's a frost cold miller light to you my friend.
I'm fairly certain Greg Gumble is a little person. Just think about it...
Midget -insert comment-
Oh God I'm going to hell but this one is my favorite. Just be glad I didn't use the original caption. I don't think i'll ever use a laundromat again, i'm so afraid this will happen to me.
Midget Tossing- Safety First!
I can't believe there's pictures out there like this. It's so wrong but I think with the right teammate I could make the olympics... let me know when your ready to start training Jaime.
Midget Soccer- Sure they're just kids, or are they?
If you think i'm being insensitive just realize that my brother is a little person. He's the one on the right. Sure we look just like kids but I was 8 and he's 22 in this picture, sorry Kyle the truth is out. This is for all the shit I got growing up especially the time...
Mini-Kiss
You have to rock out when playing sports, and there's no better way than to do it with a much better version of one of rock's legendary bands- actually I don't like Kiss. Actually I think I've used 'rock' in every context possible this Blog.
Weeman-Gets the award 4 most BADASS midget!
This guy does it all- skateboard, extreme sports and homoeroneous acts. Is most famous for using his stature to get beat to shit on Jackass. Most importantly his guest appearances on Wildboys has given him this title. Anyone his size willing to fuck around with animals that really do want and could eat him gets made props.
SHOUT OUTS- here's some honorable mentions for deserving little people
The guy who played Miles Finch in ELF for lines like this: "Hey, jackweed, I get more action in a week than you've had your entire life. I've got houses in LA, Paris, and Vail... each one of them with a 70-inch plasma screen. So I suggest you wipe that stupid smile off your face before I come over there and smack it off! You feelin' strong, my friend? Call me elf one more time." It takes a true athlete to take out comedies Will Farell.
http://www.gotwavs.com/0058493028/MP3S/Movies/Elf/onemoretime.mp3

Vern Troyer for being one of the richest little people in the business. His only downfall was for the Surreal life. Not for being on it but for not hooking up with Chyna Doll. Come on you know that's a hollywood couple if you've ever seen one. He could hold his own too, he works hard in those Austin Powers fight scene.
Warwick Davis
He is one of my favorite actors. Willow, Leprachaun, Hitch Hiker's Guide, and countless other classic movies. This guy rocks, yeah I used it again, despite he's not an athlete but for the name alone.
Now the #1 Little Person
He's not the stereotypical athlete out there, he's not 'legally' a midget, he's got more spunk, attitude and class than any other little person I've met!
