Humeur actuelle :  je ne tiens pas en place

A guy walked  into a mall with  a shot  gun last night and began shooting people.  Killing 5,  severely wounding 4 before  an  off duty cop finally  shot and killed him.  Wh..wh...what??  In Salt Lake City?  In the Mormon capital of the  world?  How could that be?  It took a while to sink in...this  is a few short miles from my home.  This is a mall  I have been to.  That is my beloved Pottery Barn.  Initially - I was annoyed that Heroes was being pre-empted for news...until I heard what the news was.   Holy  Crap...really?   All I can say is Satan is real...evil abounds and this is nothing short of evil.  What  must  the families of  the  victims and the family  of this disturbed young man be experiencing?  I can not phathom it.

Humeur actuelle :  joyeux
Dreamgirls comes out with the most - but not the biggest nods of the morning.

Yes, at 6:38am this morning, Hollywoods jaws collectively dropped as Dreamgirls was NOT named as a contender for Hollywoods biggest prize:  Best Picture.  Yet, overall with 8 nominations - it boast the most nominations for any movie.  But, no Best Picture nod, no Best Director nod?  What gives?  Most say that Letters from Iwo Jima took the coveted slot - but who can say which one actually over took it.

This was an interesting nomination to WATCH.  Salma Hayek got increasingly choked up throughout the nomination process for all of the Latinos and Latinas that were nominated.  Her good friends Penelope Cruz and Alejandro what's his name were nominated and she was moved.  It was sweet but a little uncomfortable as co-announcer Academy President Sid Ganis continually looking at her as she struggled to get the nods out.

It was certainly a good morning for American Idol , Bad News Bears and The Mickey Mouse Club as both earned their stripes with their first alumnus garnering an Oscar nomination.  Jennifer Hudson can keep thumbing her nose at Simon Cowells observation that she continally "sang beyond her depth", because now she is an Oscar nominee for her standing ovation worthy performance as Effie in Dreamgirls.  Bad News Bears hearthrob, Jackie Earle Hayley finally earned his respect for his supporting role in Little Children - who knew we'd be talkin' bout the Bears (as in Bad News ones) today??And Yay!  Ryan Gosling, a Mickey Mouse Club alum, got a well-deserved nod for Best Actor for Half Nelson.  But, all I want to know is if Rachel McAdams, his Notebook co-star and on-again/off-again significant other is going to be his date.

Who didn't?  Besides Dreamgirls there were many other "no shows" that seemed sure to be on the invite list.  Names like Jack Nicholson, Ben Affleck, Renee Zellweger, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Toni Collette and Brad Pitt weren't called out.  Don't fret for Brad though - not only does he still have Angelina - he may still be up for a statue - he was one of the produces of Best Picture contender The Departed and pending a decision by the Academy for the "official" list of Producers - his name could be on that list!

My Picks:

Best Supporting Actor - Alan Arkin?  Where did he come from?  I loved Little Miss Sunshine and he was great...even when he was just a dead body - but that was an out of no where nomination - I would have liked to see Steve Carrell get a nod from that show or better yet Greg Kinnear win a nod.  And really, I was sad that Ben Afflect didn't get nominated  - I haven't seen Hollywoodland.  But, really, I just like him and wanted him to get some of his own-separate-from-Damon cred.  He is already an Oscar winner - but I just wanted to see him get a nod!  Djimon Hinsou - I love you and you are beautiful.  I haven't seen Blood Diamond - but hear you are great.  Jackie Earle Hayley - you'll always be a Bad News Bear to me and congrats Eddie Murphy - finally you have your Oscar nod - very rare for the real comedians.  He once told Barbara Walters he knew he would never get an Oscar nod - way to prove yourself wrong.  I'm most happy for Marky Mark Wahlberg getting his nod for The Departed - thought he buzz is sooo NOT with him and his reward really is his nod, but I want him to win.  Though really "word on the street" is its Eddie's year.

Best Supporting Actress:  Fun Fact - if Abigail Breslin wins for Little Miss Sunshine she will be the second youngest Oscar winner EVER...by 159 DAYS.  Tatum O'Neal was only 10 years 148 days when she won - and Abigail would be 10 years 307 days.  (Seriously, someone COUNTED!)  She was hilarious as Little Miss Sunshine - I'm happy she was nom'd.  I haven't seen Babel and I can't pronounce the names of the 2 actresses nominated in this category from that movie...uh...good luck to them?? :-)  Cate Blanchett is always good - but she already has an Oscar for this very category and you know how I am about repeat winners.  And then there was Jennifer.  Its more than just the fact that we share the same first name....when I saw her have a complete mental breakdown on screen through a SONG I wanted to leap from my chair and applaud (in many theaters this actually happened) - but, really I have never seen anything like this on the screen.  She was AMAZING.  And she better win this Oscar.  I think she'll win, I want her to win...she better win!

Best Actor:  Yeah, cute Ryan Gosling is nominated.  At 26 years old if he were to win, he would be the youngest Best Actor winner EVER.  I'm all about setting new records.  That would be cool and incredibly unexpected.  The real race is between Leo and Forest Whitaker  (you know who I mean when I say Leo - he should just go ahead and drop the DiCaprio).  I want Leo to get his Oscar.  I do.  And his nod was surprisingly for Blood Diamond and NOT for The Departed...though both were Oscar calibur.  But, really Forrest Whitaker is incredible.  Nominated for The Last King of Scotland - he is so good as the murderous leader - its another one where you see the performance and you think "Oscar".   Peter O'Toole at 74 and 8 nominations and no wins - could be rewarded not just for his role in Venus but really for his whole career.  The Academy may just give it to good old Lawrence of Arabia.  And Will.  Will Smith is so good - his Chris Gardner was so pitch perfect.... but like his last nomination - its just not his year.  But, he'll get an award - someday - just not this year.  I want Ryan Gosling to win...just because.  But, I think it will go to Forrest Whitaker...with Peter O'Toole being the possible sentimental choice.

Best Actress.  Meryl Streep just got her 14th nomination, with 2 wins...she could win again...but she won't.  This is the one race this year that seems pre-determined.  Helen Mirren in The Queen has the buzz, all the critics circle awards and really - no one thinks she NOT going to win it.  So, its hers to lose.  Kate Winslet got her 5th nomination at 31 thats pretty good.  Meryl was 37 when she got her 5th.  Kate I want you to get one too...just like Leo.  Jack and Rose both deserve Oscars...but not this year - wouldn't it be fun if they won the same year?  This would be a good year - exactly 10 years since Titanic - but its not going to happen that way.  Judi Dench already has one for her 7 minutes on screen in Shakespeare In Love (still the shortest role ever awarded).  And Penelope Cruz - there is quite a Latin flavor to these nominations - you never know.  I think Helen Mirren will win.  I want her to win.  It would be weird if she doesn't.

Best Animated Feature.  I want Cars to win.  I thought Happy Feet was weird.  And really? Monster House - over my favorite animated feature of the year, Flushed Away.  Seriously I LOVED Flushed Away - why didn't more people see this?  Soo, good, soo cute.  I want Flushed Away to win - but since it can't overcome the not being nominated thing, for my little nephew Robbie - I want CARS to win.

Best Director - Give Martin Scoresese a trophy already.  Just give it to him.  I'm sick of all the whining of all of his actors and everyone who has ever worked with him.  He makes a good film.  The Departed is fabulous.  GIVE IT TO HIM.  7 nominations - no wins.  Please just give it up.   Babel director Alejandro something or other is a real contender and interesting in this category no nod for director of Best Picture nominee Little Miss Sunshine - instead we have a nod for Paul Greengrass for United 93.  Um.  ok? Clint is an Academy favorite and could always be an upset or even Stephen Frears for The Queen...but seriously - give the dang thing to Marty already.

Best Picture - I haven't seen enough of them to really care at this point.  I would love for Little Miss Sunshine indy glory to bring it to Oscar winner...90% of Best Picture Oscar winners are tearjearkers and LMS is the only one that is even sort of a tearjerker.  So, there's that.  I hear that The Departed really should win - but I haven't seen Letters from Iwo Jima, Babel or The Queen to be able to say that definitively.  But, all of these movies are so serious...Ellen Degeneres has heavy material here to work with.  That is why I'm so sad DreamGirls didn't make this list - it would have been great material for the host - that's a reason to be nominated -right?  I think the Departed will take it.

Well, Come February 25th - You know where I'll be and what I'll be watching. I recommend you tune in and see how I did.  Full nomination list below.

Yay!  Award season has finally begun.  Golden  Globe nominations were announced this morning...

Here are my observations -

Leonardo DiCaprio will have the toughest race on his hands as  he vies for a Lead Actor in a Dramatic Movie...with  his biggest competition being...himself.  DiCaprio is nominated twice in the same category for his lead turns in Blood Diamond  and The  Departed...will  this split his support and mean he has no chance of winning it?  Or double his chances? Same goes for Helen Mirren - 2 nods best actress TV Miniseries or Movie  for Elizabeth I and  Prime Suspect. (plus she also got a nom for Lead Actress for "The Queen"  - Wow!)  Clint Eastwood is also up against himself as best director - for both "Flags of  Our Fathers' and "Letter  from Iwo Jima"  Will  any of these two-fers take  home  the Globe -it seems a  long shot  as  all  their supporters  might not align as to which is the better of  the performances  for  each individual.  It will be interesting to see.

Leo,  Clint  and Helen weren't  the only ones with multiple nods, several got multiple nods albeit in separate categories....Annette Bening, Toni Collette, and Emily Blunt each doubled up.

I haven't seen many  of these  movies and I don't know how many of them I will...but I do want to see Dreamgirls - who got nominated for best musical or comedy and scored nods for Jennifer Hudson (Simon Cowell is  soooo eating crow - he told her  on American Idol that she was "singing beyond her depth" -  take that too-tight-T-Shirt man), Beyonce Knowles and Eddie Murphy - but got snubbed for writer/director Bill Condon.  I also can't wait to see Will Smith in The Pursuit of Happyness.  Can't Wait.

No noms for Greg Kinnear and Steve Carrell - the funniest parts of Little Miss Sunshine - but they did show love to Toni Collette????  Steve Carrell still got his well deserved nom for The Office  -  but where is  John Krasinski - Jim is my favoritte part of The Office.  Not just cause  he's cute - but I love every delivery and he just cracks me up.

TV surprised me a little.  No love for my Studio 60 boys (though Matthew Perry got a nom for the Ron Clark Story)- but did get a nod for Sarah Paulson - and I seriously believe Bradly and Matthew outshine her every week.  Heck, I think Amanda Peet outshines her every week...but, I do love Sarah and I suppose I  should be happy that Studio 60 got any kind of mention at  all.

Heroes, rock....especially Hiro.  I love Masi Oka as  Hiro on Heroes.  Not only did Heroes score a nom for best Drama, Masi did too and was the only "hero" singled out.   He is more than just a well practiced face squinter.  LOVE HIM.

Grey's got lots of  love.  Patrick Dempsey, Ellen Pompeo and Kathryn Heigl all  won  a nom...and the show for best drama...previous Globe winner, Sandra Oh, though, was not recognized...neither was pitch perfect Chandra Wilson.  I'm hoping Izzie takes it ---all for that scene with Denny's dead body.  Good Stuff.

LOST has begun to lose me as not enough questions are being answered and more and more unfold.  But, the Hollywood Foreign Press still loves it and nom'd it for  Best Drama  and Evangeline Lily is also  up for an award...really?  her?  Ok.  She was great...but what about Matthew Fox?  Where is he?

Ugly Betty did ABC proud with noms for the show and America  Ferrera.   I like that  show.  My like has not yet grown to love...but it is a steady burn of like.  Good Job.

Big Love got some notice and  that makes me ...well sad.  I  really hate  for more attention to be paid  to  it.  As a Utah Mormon, I hate the  attention it  brings and its protrayal of EVERYTHING.  I get that its not about Mormons, but it is in Utah.  and well...I just hate can't get past  the subject and locale.

Hollywood Foreign Press sure loves Maggie  Gyllenhall...Jake's sister got a big notice for Sherrybaby and indie flick NO ONE has seen, but apparently she was great in.  The HFP actually launched Maggie into the limelight when they nominated for little seen indie flick Secretary and it was all bells and whistles for her since then...I wanted her  to be nominated for Stranger Than Fiction, but just Will Ferrell got that honor.

Well, there is probably much more I can ramble on about - because Yay!  Its Award Show season - but I'm late to pick up my Granny for some Christmas shopping.  I'll be tuning in on January 15th for the show for sure  and forming many, many  more opinions!

Yay!  I have a blog...I can ramble on and on and on about the likes of all  things pop culture!  Ah, a place for my ramblings...  I can talk about how I love all things Aaron Sorkin or what I think the networks are doing  wrong.. or my latest new music, TV, movie or book discovery.  This is just a celebratory note of lots of bemoaning and pontitficating to come.  Yay!
