The Aboriginal Album of the Year category received a lot of profile at the JUNO Awards this past weekend. There was an outstanding Honouring Ceremony, a standing ovation for the category winner and great support from the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN).

The Honouring Ceremony was held for Tracy Bone, Billy Joe Green, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Team Rezofficial, Tagaq and Crystal Shawanda on Saturday afternoon at the Chief Joe Matthias Recreation Centre on Squamish Territory. The event was organized by the Aboriginal Initiatives Committee of the Music from Sea to Sky Host Committee for the 2009 JUNO Awards and included traditional honouring songs and the presentation of blankets and painted hand drums. The Spakwus Slulem were the first to sing and their song accompanied the presentation of the Coast Salish blankets made by Debbie Sparrow. An honour song by Mike Dangeli & Family followed, bringing the drums painted by Mike Dangeli (Nisga’a, Tlingit and Tsimshian Nations) and Don McIntyre (Anishinabe) to life.

The ceremony was quite moving and a couple of the nominees teared up
during the honour songs and gift presentation. “The Aboriginal honouring celebration was the highlight for me during the Juno weekend festivities. I had a difficult time holding back the tears when I heard the drums,” explains nominee Tracy Bone. “We were all presented with so many beautiful gifts including our own hand made drums with their own names and stories and such amazing artwork! The people gave me strength and made me feel at home. Kudo's out to Elaine Bomberry and the host committee for putting on such a memorable event.”

Later that night, the legendary Buffy Sainte-Marie was presented with the JUNO for Aboriginal Album of the Year during the Gala Dinner at the Westin Bayshore Inn in downtown Vancouver. The category was sponsored by APTN, which moved the announcement into a prime position during the Gala, providing extra time for the crowd to further acknowledge Sainte-Marie with one of the nights few standing ovations.

Aboriginal artists were also well represented at JUNOFest during the weekend. On Friday night, Kinnie Starr performed at Bar None and Billy Joe Green closed down the Yale Hotel with a two hour set. Saturday night included gigs for Tracy Bone at the Yale, George Leach at the Backroom Lounge and Tagaq at the Red Room. Crystal Shawanda played “You Can Let Go” at GM Place during the televised award show on Sunday night, while Sainte-Marie presented on of the evenings trophies on the vine-dressed set.

After the televised show, Team Rezofficial and
Joey Stylez performed for a loving audience at the Fabric Nightclub in the Gastown district of downtown Vancouver.

Manitoba Music’s Aboriginal Music Program is now accepting applications for AMP Camp 2009. The latest installment of this music development project for Aboriginal artists from across Canada will take place March 1-6, 2009 at the Misty Lake Lodge in Manitoba.

AMP Camp is a one-week professional and artistic development project that gives emerging and mid-career Aboriginal recording artists a chance to develop their understanding of the music industry along with their ability to succeed in it. The project is made possible by a working partnership between Manitoba Music’s Aboriginal Music Program and the Music Section of the Canada Council for the Arts.

Each day of AMP Camp begins with workshops on business topics. In the past, these discussions have included:
• The basics of booking a tour;
• Other ways for artists to make money in the music industry besides selling CDs and performing live;
• What producers, managers, agents, labels and publishers do and how to use them effectively;
• How to get your business together;
• How to make broadcast quality recordings; and,
• Submitting music to radio stations.

The afternoons and evenings at AMP Camp are dedicated to artistic development with sessions on songwriting, musicianship, vocal skills and performance.

The workshops are lead by a faculty of industry professionals from multiple parts of the country. In the past two years, the instructors have included Kinnie Starr, Derek Miller, Heather Kelly, Heather Bishop, Billy Joe Green, Marty Ballentyne, Vince Fontaine, Doug Cox, Errol Ranville and Salvador Ferreras, to name a few.

AMP Camp has up to 15 spots for Aboriginal recording artists from Manitoba and 15 for participants from the rest of Canada. The Application Form is available on the Aboriginal Music Program website, aboriginalmusic.ca and it contains additional information about the project.

The application deadline for AMP Camp 2009 is December 5, 2008 and the registration fee will be due January 23, 2009 for all successful applicants. The registration fee for AMP Camp 2008 is $300 and a discounted rate of $200 is available to members of regional music industry associations (ie. Music BC, Alberta Music Industry Association, Music Yukon, SaskMusic, Manitoba Music, Music Newfoundland and Labrador, Music New Brunswick, Music PEI and Music Nova Scotia).

The Aboriginal Music Program would like to acknowledge the financial support of the Canada Council for the Arts, Manitoba Culture, Heritage, Tourism and Sport, Manitoba Film and Sound, the Manitoba Arts Council, NCI FM and a contribution by Manitoba Music through the Manitoba Music and Motion Pictures Development Project.

What past participants say about their AMP Camp experience:

“It was the best expirience I’d had in such a long time,” says Marcel Gagnon, a talented recording artist with three albums under his belt. “Working with fellow musicians and teachers had opened my eyes and ears to a whole new world and what it takes to succeed in this industry. Thank you AMP Camp for all you have taught me.”

“The instructors were knowledgeable, informative and great to talk to. It was such a great week to share ideas and meet new friends,” says Karen Donaldson-Shepherd of Alberta-based band Crow Girls. “I especially appreciated the time the instructors spent with us after work and during meals and in between sessions. I really enjoyed my time at AMP Camp last year.”

“AMP Camp was an important moment in my life journey because I gained a wealth of knowledge from just sitting and listening to the stories and experiences of the instructors and talented musicians there,” says Eddy Robinson, lead singer for the Toronto-based drum group Morningstar River. “I will always be inspired by that week at AMP Camp, Gitchi-meegwetch!”

“I don’t know where else I could find all this information about the music industry,” says Murray Sylvester, a past participant from the Beausoleil First Nation in Ontario. “Now I know about SOCAN, what the union does, how to work with sound techs and where I can get help. I had a really great time and I’m really glad I could be a part of AMP Camp this year.”

“The feedback I received on my performance skills and songwriting was great,” says Jared Sowan, a soulful composer and performer from the Swan River First Nation in northern Alberta. “I went to AMP Camp because I just hit a wall, artistically and I just needed an extra boast to help me get to that next level in my career. I’m still soaking up everything from last week and I can’t even begin to tell you how much AMP Camp has helped me and inspired me.”

The festivities for the 2008 Canadian Country Music Awards (CCMA) in Winnipeg were fantastic and Aboriginal artists were all over the events. The week included a Ray St. Germain concert at the Club Regent Casino and Shane Yellowbird at the Palomino Club on Thursday, the Songwriter's Cafe, festival kick-off party and six Aboriginal venues on Friday, the CCMA FanFest, Industry Brunch, Manitoba Music showcase and five Aboriginal venues on Saturday, the Gala Dinner and Shane Yellowbird at the EMI party on Sunday and the big award show with a performance by Crystal Shawanda at the MTS Centre on Monday.

Ray St. Germain's show at the Club Regent Casino on Thursday night featured the release of his new CD along with performances by his five children and three of his grandchildren. The show was sold out and the Casino added a second night to meet the demand. Earlier that evening Shane Yellowbird held down a solid set for the CBC at Winnipeg's legendary Palomino Club.

The Songwriter's Cafe was hosted by Ray St. Germain on Friday afternoon at the Delta Hotel. The event was well attended and Manitoban songwriter Ashley Robertson and Saskatchewan's Donny Parenteau joined Ray on stage for a couple songs.

Friday night was extremely busy and began at the McPhillips Street Station Casino with an opening reception for delegates and the New Artist Showcase. AMP Camp 2007 participant Mitch Daigneault performed for close to 500 country music industry folks at the showcase earning praise for his smooth delivery and solid songwriting. Later that evening Strongfront Records presented C-Weed, JC Campbell and Billy Joe Green at the Pyramid Cabaret, NCI FM and the CIMNetwork showcased the talents of Tracy Bone, Highway 373, JC Campbell, Jerry Sereda, Rayne DeLaronde, Fred Moose and Holy Vee at the Norwood Hotel, Darren Lavallee performed at the Country Corral, Darryl Sanderson entertained the audience at the Lincoln Hotel, DJ St. Germain held down the Pony Corral, and 100 Years Rising performed at the Westbrook.

Saturday started with the Industry Awards Brunch at the Winnipeg Convention Centre where several awards were presented for talent buyers, agents, managers and broadcasters. The afternoon included a performance by Shane Yellowbird on the Scotia Bank Stage for close to 8,000 people at the CCMA FanFest. The evening entertainment was anchored by the Manitoba Music showcase featuring Tracy Bone at the Windsor, along with another night of Aboriginal artists presented by the CIMNetwork at the Norwood, and Darren Lavallee, DJ St. Germain, Darryl Sanderson, and 100 Years Rising at their respective weekend venues. Donny Parenteau also performed at the Club Regent Casino on Saturday night.

A second set of awards were presented on Sunday night at the Gala Dinner. This was followed by a reception at the Delta Hotel Ballroom and a party for guest of EMI at the Pyramid Cabaret where Shane Yellowbird performed. The CIMNetwork presented fourth straight night of Aboriginal artists at the Norwood on Sunday evening as well.

Monday's main event was the big CCMA show at the MTS Centre where Crystal Shawanda performed her hit single "You Can Let Go." The show was entertaining and Manitoban greats Doc Walker completed a clean sweep for all the awards they were up for. Later that night the CIMNetwork completed their weekend run with an after party featuring Highway 373, Don Amero, Jerry Sereda and Holy Vee, while DJ St. Germain performed with special guests at the Pony Corral.

Even though the CCMA didn't include an Aboriginal category, Aboriginal artists were well represented throughout the categories. Crystal Shawanda was up for Single of the Year, Female Artist of the Year, her reality show on CMT was in the running for Country Music Program or Special of the Year and her music video director was up for Video Director of the Year. Shane Yellowbird was nominated for Male Artist of the Year while his team earned nominations for CCMA All-Star Band – Steel Guitar, Management Company of the Year, Record Company of the Year and Record Company Person of the Year. Donny Parenteau was in the running for CCMA All-Star Band Award – Fiddle.

Furthermore, several CCMA delegates made their way across the city to take in performances by Tracy Bone, Highway 373, Ray St. Germain and a number of the other players from Manitoba's Aboriginal country music community.

National Aboriginal Day is a big deal in Manitoba and this year the celebrations are starting early. The White Buffalo Spiritual Society will be kicking things off in a good way with a pipe ceremony and lighting of the sacred fire at the Oodena Circle at the Forks in Winnipeg on Wednesday, June 18 at 5:00 am. The music begins Thursday night with a Burnt-Project 1 and Team Rezofficial show and continues into Friday and Saturday with multiple events around the province.

Some of the bigger events include the Manito Ahbee Festival competition pow wow at the Red River Ex, which has prize money for dancers and drums and the Aboriginal Day Live '08 concert at the Forks on Saturday night, which is presented by the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network.
