Melbourne in running to host 'Wolverine' premiere

BY PAM HARBAUGH • FLORIDA TODAY • April 10, 2009

..

..
All you movie fans need to get busy.

As Hugh Jackman stated in a YouTube video, he plans to bring his alter ego, Wolverine, plus many more X-Men, to the town that receives the most votes to host the world premiere of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine."
And guess what? Melbourne was fourth in the running as of Wednesday, according to CNBC.com. That's our Melbourne, folks, not the one in Australia.
The reaction from movie fans? Wow.
"Wow. Really? Wow," said Terry Cronin, co-founder of the Melbourne Independent Film Festival.
"Wow. That is Awesome. Wow," said Melbourne resident Jerry Fuqua, an "X-Men" fan.
"Wow. Cool," said Shaun Sorenson, assistant manager for Famous Faces & Funnies in West Melbourne. "To have a Hollywood premiere here would be awesome."
Brevard County had that honor when "Armageddon" premiered at Kennedy Space Center in 1998.
"Everywhere on TV, it was about the Space Coast," said Bonnie King, Brevard's film commissioner. "We have to have this."
Cronin agreed. He said that if big names come see Brevard, they'll fall in love with it and want to shoot their next film here.
"Anytime you get Hollywood looking at Melbourne, it helps the film industry in our community," he said.
CNBC's Web site said Davis, Calif., Hastings, Neb., and Austin, Tex., were ahead of Melbourne.
Voting continues through April 17. The winning town will be announced April 20, and the premiere, in all its glory, will happen in the winning town April 27.
In an e-mail, Rob Kurrus, owner of Premiere Theaters Oaks 10 near Melbourne Square mall, urged people to vote for ZIP code 32901.
To vote, go to www.x-menorigins.com/premiere.

hope to see you at www.FXshow.com this weekend!
