Spuds!! Lots of news this month:
---------------------------------------------------------
DEVO "Are We Not Men?" and "Freedom of Choice"
Re-issues coming soon!
----------------------------------------------------------

Deluxe reissues are available 11.3.09!

"Q: Are We Not Men?, A: We Are Devo!", DEVO's debut album circa 1978, will be re-issued on CD and Vinyl. Bonus material includes a live version of the album played front to back which was recorded at the London Forum in May 2009. In that performance - never before available - the band performs "Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!" in its entirety, front to back live! The Daily Mirror described the show as, "tight as a gnats nethers; note-perfect and impeccably choreographed in their traditionally minimalistic schlock-shock style."

There will also be a SUPER DELUXE version of the "Are We Not Men?" re-issue, which will include a DVD of DEVO's London 2009 show. It will only be available on the ClubDevo.com site. (release date and final info still tbd) and available digitally as a stand-alone long form video through iTunes (release date still tbd).

"Freedom of Choice", DEVO's 3rd and most popular album circa 1980, will also be reissued on CD and Vinyl. It will include a bonus disc of live material: the six-song "DEV-O LIVE EP", recorded in 1980 at San Francisco's Fox Warfield Theatre. Also included - of course - is the remastered version of the "Freedom Of Choice" album.

Both are re-mastered, and packaging for both deluxe editions includes exclusive stuff from the DEVO archives: photos, art sketches, handwritten lyrics, and a glimpse inside Mark Mothersbaugh's early sketchbooks.

There will be more DEVO goodies coming soon, including new merchandise at the DEVO shows in November.

For Immediate Release

DEVO SIGN GROUND-BREAKING WORLDWIDE PARTNERSHIP WITH WARNER BROS. RECORDS

LABEL TO REISSUE DELUXE VERSIONS OF ARE WE NOT MEN? AND FREEDOM OF CHOICE ON NOVEMBER 3RD

BAND LAUNCH SPECIAL TOUR TO PERFORM BOTH ALBUMS IN THEIR ENTIRETY

September 16, 2009 —  Burbank, CA — DEVO have signed a unique, ground-breaking worldwide partnership with their original label home Warner Bros. Records that exhibits the band’s long-time commitment to innovation in all aspects of their career. In the ’80s, the band put the “new” in the music revolution labeled “New Wave” with their synergistic mix of electronic rock, unparalleled theatrical live shows, and self-directed, groundbreaking music-videos — creating a multi-media art assault that resonates in contemporary pop culture. Now DEVO continue to pioneer new territory by exclusively teaming with Warner Bros. Records to internationally service all aspects of the band’s career, including recorded music, touring, merchandising, web services, promotion, ecommerce, sponsorships, licensing, and endorsements.

“Devo have been called everything from geniuses to deviants and have always been ahead of their time,” says Elyse Rogers, SVP of Touring and Artist Development at WBR. “They are brilliant multi-media innovators who express themselves through far more than just recorded music. Their videos, live shows, merchandise, and visual attack are as big a part of their art as the music is. We could not be more excited to continue to break new artistic ground with them while working to redefine the evolving music-industry paradigm.”

“We are excited to embark on DEVO’s latest sonic subversion with the label that first unleashed us on the unsuspecting public,” says the band’s Gerald Casale. “De-evolution is real!” Adds Mark Mothersbaugh: “We wouldn’t be doing it if it weren’t in our genes!”

Warner Bros. Records released six of DEVO’s classic albums between the years of 1978 and 1984. To mark the band’s new deal, the label will reissue deluxe CD and limited-edition colored vinyl versions of DEVO’s 1978’s gold debut Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! and 1980’s platinum favorite Freedom of Choice, as well as a seven-inch vinyl single of “Jocko Homo/Mongoloid” on November 3rd.

The day the reissues are released, DEVO will launch a series of very special live performances in select markets (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, Washington D.C., New York City, and Toronto), during which they will play back-to-back nights in each city. One the first night, the band will perform Are We Not Men? in its entirety; on the second night, they will perform Freedom of Choice in its entirety. As a bonus, fans who purchase tickets online to any one of these concerts will receive three demos recently uncovered in the DEVO vaults. The three previously unreleased versions, “Whip It,” “Red Shark” (later re-titled “it’s Not Right” and recorded with different lyrics), and “Turn Around,” were all recorded on a four-track in the band’s rehearsal space at Modern Music in Hollywood, CA. Tickets for most of the shows go on-sale on September 18th. All tour dates are listed below.

Formed in Akron, OH in 1974 as a multi-media experiment, DEVO caught the attention of such pop music luminaries as Iggy Pop, David Bowie, and Neil Young, whose support led to a recording contract with Warner Bros. Records. The label released the Brian Eno-produced Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! in 1978, followed by Duty Now for the Future in 1979. In 1980, DEVO released its commercial breakthrough album Freedom of  Choice, which featured the timeless Top 20 hit “Whip It,” followed by 1981’s New Traditionalists, 1982’s Oh, No! It’s Devo, and 1984’s Shout, its last album for Warner Bros. Records. After releasing 1988’s Total Devo and 1990’s Smooth Noodle Maps on Enigma Records, the band went on hiatus. Mark Mothersbaugh applied his aesthetic to the task of composing scores for TV and film features, while DEVO co-founder and principle co-songwriter Gerald Casale applied his DEVO-driven skills to directing music videos for scores of hit bands before becoming a full-time commercial director.

Now original members Gerald Casale, Bob Casale, Mark Mothersbaugh, and Bob Mothersbaugh are back with drummer Josh Freese (Nine Inch Nails, Weezer, Guns N’ Roses) and cooking up huge plans. De-evolution 2010 will include the release of a brand-new studio album (featuring top-notch producers and collaborators), international festival appearances, and a proper tour of North American, Europe, Japan, Australia, and South America. Stay tuned for more DEVO news, or visit the band’s website, www.clubdevo.com.

DUTY NOW, SPUDS!!

for DEVO, Inc.

GREETINGS, SPUDS!

A new era is dawning for DEVO, comrades…and with it comes a fresh start for all of us.

As you probably know, DEVO has been working on a brand new album - their first in nearly two decades.
This means DEVO will soon be performing many live shows across the USA in 2009, and then worldwide in 2010. Tour dates will be announced soon.

We here at Devo, Inc. have been extremely busy preparing for this new era, working on a new online presence, new costuming for the band’s upcoming concerts, new merchandise designs, new fan club offers, etc.

For many years now, I have been serving DEVO in a number of ways – from creating DEVO’s web sites and providing content, and designing merchandise, to managing their ever-growing  fan club. It’s been quite a lot to manage on my own, and I’ve been very fortunate to receive assistance along the way from many DEVOted fans (to whom I am forever grateful).

This new era of DEVO’s long career will bring with it a new batch of responsibilities for yours truly. Not only will I continue to work closely with the band on Web content, graphic design, etc., I will also be working with a team of comrades at DEVO’s new record label, who will be handling a lot of the technical work of Web site construction and maintenance. This will enable me to focus more on creating interesting content for the Web sites, including daily blogs & inside reports from DEVO events worldwide. The site will eventually be chocked full of video & audio content, plus blogs from me and the members of DEVO on a weekly if not daily basis.

In the coming days, you’ll notice some big changes at ClubDevo.com. We’ll be launching a brand new site – stripped down to the bare essentials for late 2009…introducing the world to DEVO’s new album, videos, etc. The full DEVO site will be reborn in 2010 with the gradual introduction of tons of content, old & new. The new online store will feature old favorites at first, and a selection of brand new items by late 2009/early 2010. The fan club is being completely restructured, and current Club DEVO registered members will retain their lifetime member status, with access to new fan club content.

The very popular Chosen Mutations and Signs Of DEVOtion online image galleries have been moved from ClubDevo.com to Devo-Obsesso.com. You can still send me your images for those pages, but it may take me a while to add them, since I’ve got a huge backlog of images to add already. Thanks to all of you who have submitted images in the past. The DEVO MySpace page will soon have a facelift, too….but I’m not sure exactly when.

Devo-Obsesso.com will soon feature a full report from the recent Hardcore DEVOtional 2009 Fan Gathering in Cleveland, Ohio. If you have any photos or video from the event, please consider sending to me via email or on disc to this address: Club DEVO, 702 Tyler Rd., Raleigh, NC 27604. I will be sure to credit you for anything I use in the report.

Now…onward, Spuds!
It’s going to be an exciting time for DEVOtees in the coming months…

NEW MISSIVE FROM GENERAL BOY!

DATED APRIL 2nd, 2009:

I salute all of you who have entered the arena knowing there is no escape. Devolution is real and now this is the End Game. The arrival of the New World Order is as certain as the melting polar ice caps. Devo has put a wet finger to the wind, sniffed the Chem-trails and set sail on a final mission to reclaim the future they predicted. As the house band on the Titanic planet known as Earth, they have vowed to play until the freezing sea of human filth has claimed the last soul on board.

The spudboys have a plan which started in March 2009 with a beta performance of new songs and visuals in Dallas, Texas, followed by an audacious showcase at South by Southwest at The Music Hall in Austin. Expect more shows in 2009 as these devolved veterans of entertainment raise the bar once again on multi-media excitement.

Following their brave sojourn into Bush country, DEVO will return to the candied spam of SoCal to press on with their forthcoming CD of new, devolutionary songs. Expect many sightings and appetizers between now and the fall release of the new material that the boys will vigorously support with a headlining tour of the not-so-United States.

Tacking into the watershed year of 2010 Devo will navigate their "devangelical" road show to Europe, South America, Australia and Japan. Also, looming large in their future is a long anticipated Devo Documentary as well as a feature film that will capture the people encountered and times endured as Devo's early 1970's struggle to bring their unique vision to life takes them from the bowels of Akron Ohio, to the shark infested waters of Hollywood California.

Book ended by the student killings at Kent State University in 1970 and the band's legendary performance on Saturday Night Live in 1978 "The Beginning Was The End" will tell the sadly humorous story of a band that rose up against all odds only to find themselves to be proof of their own Devolutionary theory.

So, in closing, I say to you as only a life-long soldier facing the final curtain can: "Those who point fingers will most certainly find a thousand fingers pointing back at them."

Raise your hands, spuds! Raise you hands! I see fists are pumping, and middle fingers.

DUTY NOW FOR THE FUTURE,
-General Boy

----------------------------------------------

That's all for now, Spuds!
Hope to see some of you at the New Zealand art show.

Duty Now,
-Michael Pilmer
