New interview with The School here! Crazewire.de (translated by Google)

And Suddenly The World Is Full Of Sunshine

Three bands at a quid a crack is nevertheless great vfm, but The School are more than worth the price of admission on their own, having got me rather excited when I first found their myspace from someone else's guidance on facebook. Despite their relative proximity, I'd never have come across them otherwise. Sure, I'm a sucker for a female vocal (except Sh*rl**n Spit***), and without Liz Hunt's dynamic vocals the band would have no focal point. The occasional clunky keyboard phrase (try the intro to Valentine) adds to the vaguely shambling charm, and All I Wanna Do brings to mind Kirsty MacColl's 'They Don't Know', which is exalted company as far as I'm concerned. In contrast to the preceding band, taking my eyes off Liz is difficult, and when I can it's because I never realised from listening to the myspace tracks how well the fiddle lines fit the songs. Indeed I'd barely recognised the presence of a fiddle, and the combination of two female musicians also brings to mind Aberfeldy, another band making simply beautiful, classically structured, girl meets boy pop music with singalong tunes, and with more to offer than the basic guitar/bass/drums combination. Fabulous.

* "And Suddenly The World Is Full Of Sunshine" is the first line of the Left Banke song And Suddenly, as covered by The School, and I can't think of a single sentence that sums up their sound any better than that. - overlap - http://acrossthegreatdivide.blogspot.com/2008/08/and-suddenly-world-is-full-of-sunshine.html

Perhaps this is one of the phrases I like to say some time now. But what surprising to hear this from some beautiful arpeggios as The School of 'I Do not Believe In Love' and realize, according song progresses, how painful it can be utter those words. The School is not happy with pica, which has always said, and pop is what you have. The School achieved between the punishment of broken heart-finals course and the illusion of a new love when least expected it.

It was how you count the direct The School Board in The Sun February.  In recent months we have enjoyed the 7 "vinyl pink 'All I Want to Do' with the fantastic touches Liz 'Valentine'. In this' Let It Slip ', besides the already mentioned' I Do not Believe in Love 'is the catchy "I Want You Back', which stresses on the remaining issues even though none is wasted. The fabulous' Shoulder 'sinning can remember all too Camera Obscura, for example, when atisba they have a personal style that will operate at the moment although the material is limited.

Since he visited Spain for Murcia Sound in June have not been given more concert dates in our country but surely returning soon. Meanwhile, enjoy the video of 'Let it Slip' which gives its name to EP or 'And Suddenly', a version of The Left Banke that will soon be published by Slumberland Records and already you can hear on your website.

There’s Gonna Be A Storm

Ok we'll be posting reviews up here + updating them as they appear! x

INDIE MP3 - Let me start by saying that I'm not usually a fan of bands which are explicitly influenced by '60s girl groups. I've almost never heard a present-day group do Spector-style pop as well as it was done back then, and the added whiff of inauthenticity doesn't help.

With that said, I think everything is worth judging on its own merits and The School have rightly been making waves in the short time they've been around. 'Let It Slip' is the group's second release in as many months following April's limited-edition single, All I Wanna Do, both on Spanish label Elefant.

The eponymous first track is, not surprisingly, the strongest of the four. It bursts into life in a way that had me jumping out of my seat on first listen. Lyrically, it's a classic love triangle scenario ("And if you ever leave me, would you go straight to her?"). Structurally, there are similarities to labelmates Camera Obscura's hit, "Lloyd, I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken", with short verses and a frequently-repeated chorus. It's the kind of single that would be described as 'radio-friendly' were it not for the dross that most radio stations seem to prefer.

Second track 'Shoulder' continues the theme of combining mournful lyrics with soulful, uplifting music. Liz Hunt's voice comes to the fore here, and what a voice... Think a cross between Ali Howard of Lucky Soul and Tracyanne Campbell and you won't be far off the mark. The horns, drums and backing vocals are straight from playbook of '60s girl pop, and while it may not be original, the whole thing sounds fantastic.

Third song 'I Want You Back' is (sadly) not a Jackson 5 cover. It is, however, another cracking pop song shot through with regret and longing - heartbreak you can dance to. The arrangement takes a nod from Belle & Sebastian of old with a blast of trumpet and reverb-laden guitar, but that's no bad thing in my book.

The EP is rounded out with 'I Don't Believe In Love', which starts with a male vocal and some Abba-esque piano. Halfway through, the music slows to a stop, as if to forewarn the listener that something brilliant is about to happen. It is, because Liz Hunt comes in with that voice for a fantastically melodramatic finish to the EP.

The title track is available for streaming on the band's Myspace page and while the official release isn't until 16th June, it's available to buy now from the Elefant website. http://www.indie-mp3.co.uk/2008/05/school-let-it-slip-ep.html

Eardrums Music - Liz, Ryan, Ryan, Joshua, Ceri, Rosie and Steph are The School, a very nice band from Cardiff, Wales, playing super-melodic perfect pop songs with lots of sunshine inside. The band will soon release their new four track EP, "Let it slip", on the fine label Elefant records (16th June).

I've listened to the EP almost non-stop since I received it a while ago, and it's easy to fall in love with the songs, the band and the whole feeling they have in their music. Everything is very 60s, from the sound to the cover. Wonderful songs, all four of them, with infectious choruses, lots of ooh's and bap-bah's, handclaps and lush strings. I'm especially reminded by 60s girl groups, as well as more modern bands like Lucky Soul, Camera Obscura and Belle & Sebastian or bands from the 80s, like The Primitives.

I must admit that I'm not the only reason that this EP has been played constantly in my home the last weeks. My 9-year old daughter loves these songs, and her father is pleased that these brilliant pop-songs may compete with High School Musical and Hannah Montana in my daughters stereo. http://eardrumsmusic.com/2008/05/28/the-school-let-it-slip-ep/

Fire Escape Talking - If Grease 3 ever gets filmed, The School would do the soundtrack and it'd be a global success.

Their new ep, Let It Slip, is about crushes and kisses and recriminations, it smoulders as much as it struts, and it creates finger-snapping soulful grooves and sets them in endless summer days and nights.

I can hear Big Star's melancholy and Camera Obscura's soul-soaked pop and The Chiffons' exhilaration and it sounds bloody great.

Their first single, All I Wanna Do, had many people excited a couple of months ago, but I got my pants in a wad over it. Not because I don't need another song using the Be My Baby drumbeat (I don't, but every girl group-influenced band starts there) but because I already own Tracey Ullman's version of They Don't Know and didn't need another one.

Given the high quality of Let It Slip, I'll put All I Wanna Do down as a false start and look forward to more of this top pop. http://fireescapetalking.blogspot.com/2008/05/school.html

ANGMOH - Oh, Cardiff. I've discovered a number of good bands from that city, moving it up the list on possible cities to go on exchange (the list is basically a list of how many cool bands are playing said city)! This time around it's The School, whose sound I can only describe as a modern take on 60s girl groups. Without meaning any disrespect, their sound is "light and breezy", and in a perfect world the radio would be playing these tunes all through the summer. Their debut EP will be out through Elefant records on June 16th, and while you wait Elefant hope to soothe your cravings by letting you download two demos… http://www.angmoh.dk/?p=130

AMONG THE AISLES -

Arriving home after a couple of weeks of gelato and pastizzi it was nice to have a pleasant pile of records at my door welcoming me home. On the top of the pile was The School's 'Let It Slip' EP, which I'm extremely happy to find more than delivers on the promise of their first single 'All I Wanna Do'. Given their first single's understated warmth, it's startling to hear the eponymous first track blast off with upbeat soul grooves and girl group harmonies that should be dominating the dance floor of your local club night for the rest of the year. Exclusively recording on a four track in your bedroom my result in mad indie cred, but this EP shows The School are the kind of band who are only going to benefit from high production standards. The passion and diversity they show would only get lost in murky lo-fi production bands are usually forced to use on their early releases.

Despite clearly owing a dept to 60s girl groups The School, unlike so many of their com temporaries, never seem to sink into pastiche. The joy and the melodrama is there, but it doesn't seem to matter if the dresses are or not. Put simply they're not The Pipettes. Instead they came across simply as a band trying to express and share their love of pop music.

They're playing this Saturday at the Buffalo Bar and I would like very much to see them, though since I can't seem to find anyone else interested in going along I'll probably end up piking. http://amongtheaisles.blogspot.com/2008/05/school-let-it-slip.html

MELTORM (translated) - "Something to Live for - Let it Slip: If everything goes as we hope, the month of July is the month of the school.  After surprising critics with his first single, appears now, just published, this "Let It Slip" containing four "new" songs from these great guys Cardiff (UK) lovers by the sounds of groups of girls from the end of fifties and early sixties. And placed between the "New" because we (and imagine that too many of vds) long ago we knew almost all these songs (their first models and EPE) recorded at the same meeting that served to create his previous and first single from presentation.
In addition, anyone would say that our pleas have been heard and within one week we will be watching them (and enjoying) live. Now I say, if we had last summer to Lucky Soul, this summer we can sing and dance with the songs of THE SCHOOL. RECORDSTORE.CO.UK - Love Spector-esque pop, with sparkling lyrics and majestic melodies? Then you've come to the right place for Cardiff's The School are here to teach you about the myriad paths of love all wrapped up on some of the most perfect pop we've heard this side of The Beach Boys.

This four track EP features some of their finest songs to date. We'd also suggest you check out the mesmerising 'All I Wanna Do' and 'Valentine', further proof that classic pop music never goes out of fashion. - http://www.recordstore.co.uk/home.jsp?wherefrom=productdetail.jsp?productPK=unittest-Ja9i9ytgvWsF252gqN3IEb-1

SOUNDSXP - Less than a month since their last release, Cardiff's The School obviously have so many top tunes in their candy locker they can afford to release four more. Each one here, though self penned, has its roots in the 60s girl group era, with fab Spector-style productions delivering a lush wall of sound for the sugar coated indie pop. And lawks it's a lovely marshmallow rollercoaster as we follow the chirruping charms of Liz and her cohorts as she falls in and out of love accompanied by scrummy keyboards, glock, trumpets and electric violin. Delicious. - http://soundsxp.com/artman2/publish/singles/The_School_Let_It_Slip_EP.shtml

MANCHESTER MUSIC - The School are from Cardiff and hit Night and Day on the 9th July (2008). It's worth mentioning just so you can catch their female fronted indie doo wop ; a full sound that's in evidence on "Let It Slip". This is music for a high school prom informed by Phil Spector and bolstered with rolling echoes of drums and the twang of guitars. With brassy hooklines, there are cues from The Cardigans and Mary Wilson on the compelling "I Want You Back". Certainly one of the best songs this week, but it's the delivery that gives The School an edge – sounding so much like so many things yet still individually interesting. A truly impressive array of sounds, although the more upbeat songs perform better than their more restrained numbers. - http://www.music-dash.co.uk/releases/release.asp?item=5422

ROUGH TRADE - new 4 track cd from cardiff's the school. combining indie-pop and the shimmering 60's - style production, the school play sunshine pop with moments of light and shadow, sophisticated, happy songs, with a little melancholy thrown in. led by the surname-less liz, who used to be the lead singer for like-minded cardiff band the loves, the school pour on lavish phil spector strings and a bopping northern soul rhythm section for second single 'let it slip'. cd single only on elefant records. - http://www.roughtrade.com/site/shop_detail.lasso?search_type=sku&sku=300347

INDIEPAGES - The School - "Let It Slip EP" cdep  (Elefant)
Yet another excellent new find for Elefant Records, this Welsh band plays lush and pleasant indiepop in the vein of Belle & Sebastian and Camera Obscura, but also with a touch more energy, reminding me a little of Spearmint or a female-led Aerospace at times. All four songs on this EP are purely delightful and guaranteed to please any fan of the afore-mentioned bands. I definitely look forward to hearing more from this band soon!  MTQ=4/4 - http://www.indiepages.com/reviews/index.html

NORMAN RECORDS - uhoh they don't like us! we're sad now.. we made them angry. we thought we'd start negative.

The School do this whole Tracy Ullman 60's Motown ballad crossed with the theme from Eastenders. Considering the success of The Pipettes I can't really slag this 7" on Elefant too much apart from it's bland retro-isms. At least Kirsty Macoll had good songs. 'All I Wanna Do' suffers from one of the most crassly overemployed titles in the history of indie music (2nd only to "rollercoaster") I'd like to review the flip except I fear for my ears. Gah! Sicky candy floss pink. Great......

ROUGH TRADE - debut release from cardiff's female fronted the school on limited edition 7" pink vinyl on elefant records. the school play sunshine pop with moments of light and shadow, the kind of infectious, hyper-melodic pop you can simultaneously cry and dance to. sophisticated, happy songs, with a little melancholy thrown in. the tracks were produced by ian catt (saint etienne, trembling blue stars) and combine indie-pop and a shimmering 60's style production. think kirsty maccoll, think camera obscura, think 60's girl pop. absolute perfection. bring on the album - http://www.roughtrade.com/site/shop_detail.lasso?search_type=sku&sku=298044

HIPERSONICA (translated) - Right now are unknown, says The School and the first thing that comes to mind you are children running for a school courtyard. But within a few months will surely talk. The School is the new clocking seal Spanish Elefant, added another to trace if known good done in the pop label said.

Behind the name are not exactly infant children, but seven Welsh from Cardiff led by Liz, who puts voice and keyboards. The size of the band is that we do not frighten or think of a very complex sound. The result was another opposite, a pop delicate and lovely as near Belle & Sebastian and The Beach Boys. The sound sixtie seem to know very well, and if you have over for recording their first single, as a 7 ", with Ian Catt groups to bring them as close as Saint Etienne, as the cocktail is served. http://www.hipersonica.com/tag/all+i+wanna+do

ZONA DE COMPRAS - The School, from Wales, combining indie pop music and brightest of the 60, a British version of sunshine pop that combines light and shadow, pop hipermelódico contagious and can be dancing crying. Compositions sophisticated and cheerful with a point of melancholy, which was inspired by The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Phil Spector and the group of 60 girls. Before the extensive tour in September, entered the recording studio accompanied by the producer Ian Catt (Saint Etienne, Trembling Blue Stars, Nosoträsh) to record the songs that make up this debut single. http://www.zonadecompras.com/producto.asp?Id=116152

APPLE CRUMBLE - APPLE CRUMBLE - New Comer expect from Wales! Moroni Lucky Soul Camera Obscura and seven pairs of groups like the blond head bob Miss Liz & voice also looks very attractive. SHIJJUSUTIZU bear close resemblance to a pop-up style Mo Town co-sided second Great song! http://www.apple-crumble.com/shop/shop.cgi?mode=SEARCH&searchcategory=ALL&searchtype=3&keyword=4486

TAKE THE PILLS P!O!P LIKE THAT! - The amazing new indie pop band based in Cardiff, Wales, UK have just released their new single, All I Wanna Do, on Elefant Records. This EP includes two tracks 'All I Wanna Do' and the fantastic and catchy pop song 'Valentine' that repeats over and over in my mp3 player. You can stream these songs and others on their MySpace page and buy the single, a pink vinyl!

INDIE KID VS DANCE KID - Fantastic dreamy female vocal pop track. Supposedly 7 individuals in this band and the first 7 Inch is off Elefant records. One of my fav records of the year so far.

THE VILLAGE VOICE - On pink vinyl, and who hasn't wanted to be in The Ronettes once in their lifetime? And who hasn't wanted to be Tracey Ullman wanting to be in The Ronettes at least once in their bedroom ('They Don't Know', to be precise)? (This is not a slag: I am keeping my Ullman vinyl—keeping it, I tell you!) It doesn't hurt that main Schoolgirl is Liz, formerly of Yeah Yeah Yeahs-championed Welsh Sixties-heads The Loves, and that Liz is the sort of girl that everyone locally (and further a-field) has a crush on. Actually, the entire band is crush-worthy (in a bearded Swedish indie-kid way). . . you can totally understand why twee label par excellence Elefant are releasing this. Perhaps I'm only revealing my own roots in C86 when I talk about how much I adore this, but it's on pink vinyl! Pink vinyl, I tell you! - EVERETT TRUE, THE VILLAGE VOICE

PARALLAX VIEW - Regular readers will have twigged by now that Parallax View is mad fool for The School, so no alarms or surprises to see their debut release 'All I Wanna Do'/'Valentine' (out on Elefant Records from today) made Single Of The Week. Produced by Ian Catt (most readily associated with Saint Etienne) and described by one of their MySpace fans as sounding 'like Kirsty MacColl's ghost meets Camera Obscura' it's a sweet but vaguely sinister ditty of devotion that recalls 60s girlgroups, Caledonian Indie and a keyboard refrain that threatens to echo the Eastenders theme tune. In short, it's bloody marvellous.

Alex Loves You and Your Silly Pop Songs - Also while at Rough Trade, I picked up the "All I Wanna Do" 7" by Cardiff's The School. According to my notebook, I promised myself to write about this seven-piece back in January, but they must have slipped to the back of my writing mind with all the other pop discoveries I've had since. I'm glad I bought this pretty, fairy-floss pink single, though, because The School are just darling - with their tales of love and heartbreak against sixties girl group melodies, they're unthinkably sweet. "All I Wanna Do" reminds me of Kirsty MacColl's classic "They Don't Know" - considering this is one of my favourite songs EVER, it's high praise for The School. They have a new single out on Elefant - "Let It Slip" - which you should definitely buy. I sure will be! - http://alex-loves.blogspot.com/2008/06/seven-inches-besties-velour-school.html

PENNYBLACKMUSIC - 'All I Wanna Do' starts with drums which recalls those of the Jesus and Mary Chain's 'Just Like Honey' before lush arrangements kicks in and a sugary sweet vocal from singer Liz drips in best twee fashion all over it. This is definitely the best twee record of the year to date, a song to fall in love with to someone or just with yourself.

'Valentine' on the flip side has some swing style piano and, with its foot tapping beat, comes over like that stupid advert for Sheila's Wheels or the Pipettes. It is pure polka dot fun and classic pop.  - http://www.pennyblackmusic.co.uk/MagSitePages/Review.aspx?id=5871

THE DONNYBROOK WRITING ACADEMY -

If you're a fan of the Camera Obscura school of fey indie-pop, prepare to be smitten by The School, the most recent signing to Spain's always spectacular Elefant Records. The Welsh band's debut single will be released on April 14th on limited edition pink vinyl (what else?) and should win the Wales natives a slew of new fans on both sides of the Atlantic.

The video for "All I Wanna Do" is equal parts Donnybrook photo shoot and Les Parapluies de Cherbourg–charming the whole way through. If it doesn't make you a devotee, I'm not sure what will. The clip is beautifully shot and is a perfect complement to The School's perfectly-crafted, bittersweet pop music. - http://godonnybrook.com/home/?p=583
