During the 400th anniversary of "Michiel de Ruiter", a Dutch kolonial sailor, which is currently celebrated in Vlissingen, Holland, RMS activists were arrested.

The marine boat spectacle was participated by more then twenty marine ships from several countries more then 50.000 people attended the celebration. Indonesia is one of the participating countries which displayed its brand new marine ship, called Kri-diponegoro nr. 365.

The RMS activists boarded the Indonesian marine ship where they raised the RMS flag. Presumably, they raised the RMS flag at the Indonesian marine ship in order to draw attention to the terrible situation of the 39 RMS activist in Indonesia who are held in prison at this moment.

Currently 39 RMS freedom fighters are stil under arrest, FKMCPR sources in Ambon report that the group that is still under arrest by detachment 88 is constantly severely abused. During night time the prisoners are kept awake with cold water. They are also beaten with wooden sticks. The prisoners are constantly interrogated without any regard for their basic human rights.

During the National Family Day in Ambon last Friday a group of 30 freedom fighters in custom clothes danced a traditional Maluku war dance in front of the President and his entourage. They ended their dance after 15 minutes while puling out the Indonesian outlawed RMS flag. Consequently, they were immediately arrested. Earlier on Tuesday 26th of June 7 RMS activists were arrested for making RMS flags. On the 1st and 2nd of July police found 6 flags flying in different villages around Ambon island. On the second of July an anti-RMS protest took place in front of the Alfatah Mosk in Ambon other small protest rallies were hold in Malang and Jakarta.

The Republic of the South Moluccas (RMS) was proclaimed on the 25th of April 1950 in Ambon. After 8 months of bloody war Indonesia occupied most of the central Maluku Islands. The RMS government was evacuated to the mother island Ceram where they continued a guerrilla war until the 1960s. After RMS President C.R.S. Soumokil was arrested and killed by a firing squad on the 16th of April 1966 the RMS government in-exile was formed in the Netherlands. Until today the resistance against the occupation by Indonesia in Maluku continues.

In a time that Indonesia is promoting itself as an democratic country claiming to respect the basic human rights just like any other democratic country, it's a hard lesson to learn that people who peacefully express their will to be independent are put in jail by an anti terror squad. These people are no terrorist; they did not carry weapons, they only danced and pulled out the RMS flag. A question that comes to mind is: why is an anti terror squad used to arrest these activists? Why are they being abused? Could it be a way to intimidate the people of Maluku to keep them from standing up for their rights? If this is Indonesia's democratic way of solving their issues, then Indonesia is still far from becoming a democratic country.

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Police swooped on 20 separatist protesters in eastern Indonesia's Maluku province Friday when they danced and unfurled a separatist flag in front of the president, reports and police said.

The protestors started dancing during a speech by the provincial governor at an official ceremony in the provincial capital of Ambon, where a separatist movement has simmered for decades.

The dancers pulled the banned flag of the South Maluku Republic (RMS) out of a traditional local drum, ElShinta radio reported.

"While the Maluku governor was making his speech, suddenly about 20 people performed a traditional dance and flew the outlawed flag," Idrus Tatuhe, who attended the ceremony, told ElShinta.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's spokesman Andi Mallarangeng told AFP that it was "a small incident and it won't disrupt the peace in Ambon".

He added that "activity related to the separatist movement cannot be tolerated".

Police told AFP from Ambon that they had arrested 14 of the group and others escaped. (*)

President Yudhoyono orders investigation into "unscheduled dance"
Antara, 06/29/07 10:13
Ambon (ANTARA News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has ordered security personnel to investigate an "unscheduled dance" which was allegedly performed by sympatisers of outlawed South Maluku Republic (RMS) on the sidelines of the 14th National Family Day (Harganas) commemoration ceremony here on Friday.

"I want the performers of the dance be investigated," President Yudhoyono said after the dance was performed by some 30 persons.

At 10.30 a.m. after Maluku Governor Karel Albert Ralahalu gave his progress report in the Harganas event at Merdeka square, about 30 people, clad in Maluku traditional costume, came right out of the blue and performed "Cakalele dance" which was not sceduled by the committee.

Startled by such an "illegal activity," the head of state then said that if the dance was conducted with certain purposes, social and moral sanctions should be imposed against the perfomers.

"If the the dancers have certain purposes, there should be a resolute action against them," President Yudhoyono said, adding that he was informed earlier about possible illegal activity outside the agenda of Harganas committee.

After the unexpected activity, Pattimura Military Commander May. Gen Sudarmaidy Suandi, Maluku Police Chief Brig. Gen. Gatot Setiawan, and State Intelligence Agency (BIN) Chief Syamsir Siregar questioned around 15 members of the illegal dancers and found several RMS flags with them.

Earlier on Monday, Governor Ralahalu warned all public elements in Maluku province of not staging rallies or free speech forum during the commemoration of Harganas.

"I ask all public elements to make the commemoration of Harganas which is to be participated in by President Yudhoyono a success because it is a good momentum for the future of Maluku after the three-year social conflict in the province," Governor Ralahalu said on Monday.

Ralahalu pointed out that he had made a coordination with Pattimura Military Commander Maj. Gen. Sudarmaydi Soebandi and Maluku Police Chief Brig. Gen. Guntur Gatot Setyawan to take stern action against those who ever try to stage a rally or free speech forum during the event.

The governor made the warning following a statement made by Maluku chapter of Indonesian National Youth Committee (KNPI) chairman Sam Latuconsina on a separate occasion that to stage a free speech forum was necessary.

"We are going to stage free speech forum and ask President Yudhoyono why the best figures of Maluku have no longer been appointed members of cabinet," Latuconsina said. (*)
