Recently, Peepy and I spent the week at sunny Santa Barbara's Author-Go-Round. Since then, we've gotten lots of thank you cards from the kids . . .
(Um. It took a couple tries to get Puppy in place.)
Of course, Peeps was especially pleased that many of the letters were all about her . . .
There were all terrific . . .
Here's one of my favorites . . .
(I love the line about Taylor Swift!)
And my favorite question from of the students was, "Have you had any plastic surgery?"
One of the days I wore my new green jacket. It is soooo pretty! Only, I was cold, so I made sure that when the photographer from a newspaper was there, I was wearing a coat . . .

A lot of people ask if I'm able to write while on the road. (Okay, that's actually something I ask myself.)
The answer is YES! In fact, I might even get more work done when I'm traveling than at home. Like last week, I reviewed the proofreader's comments on BOBBY THE BRAVE (SOMETIMES), the next in the Bobby Ellis-Chan series . . .
Last year when we were touring the San Francisco Bay area, we stopped at Kepler's Books. Here's just a slice of the children's department, and check out the store's book club aisle! (Each of those tags represents a different book club books.)
Every now and then I hear from Book Clubs. It's soooo cool! A while ago I visited a Boy's Book Club . . . which was later mentioned in a NEWSWEEK article
Recently, this Mother/Daughter Book Club from Austin, Texas read GOOD LUCK, IVY

Erin, a writer and one of the book club moms, asked if I could send some autographed bookmarks . . .
If you belong to any of the following book clubs and would like autographed bookmarks*, drop me a line via my website:

Peeps and I are going out of town again. This time to a top secret location. We'll blog about it next, but meanwhile, here's a hint . . .
*Offer good while supplies last. Not available in all counties, some restrictions may apply. Do not operate heavy machinery while reading.

Yoo hoo! Peepy and I are in Santa Barbara this week, taking part in the 40th Annual Author-Go-Round. "What's that?" you ask. Well, it's one (or more) of the following:
A) Where authors look at the sky and twirl around until they fall down
B) A five-day celebration of books featuring four authors and attended by hundreds of students
C) A tilt-a-whirl ride that where authors are strapped in and not allowed to exit until they can explain the difference between "who's" and "whose"
Here's Peepy testing the AV equipment and rehearsing her speech . . .
Outside the busloads of students were beginning to arrive . . .
Peeps was a little scared of Sherry Shahan's area because of the fierce husky guard dog. However, they quickly became good friends . . .
Soon it was time to begin. While Sherry spoke, Steve Keithley, the MC/Director of Instructional Media Services, tried to look blurry. Mary told us all about what it was like having Hershey as a last name, and I did an interpretive dance while singing and juggling (sort of) . . .
Tim Egan drew pictures and Peep tried to let him know that she would make a good model . . . . . . but he didn't take her subtle hints.
Each student was given a booklet about the authors. After the main presentations, we spoke to small groups answering questions and autographing. Here's a question I must have been asked a billion times (or not at all) . . .
When we weren't authoring, we were eating . . . (That's author Bruce Hale. Since he always wears a hat, Peepy wore one, too.)
Peepy was sad that her bid to be immortalized in one of Tim's illustrations didn't happen. But then . . .

When we checked into our hotel room we did the usual. That is, stare at the remote for an hour and try to figure it out. Peeps finally decided to go sailing instead of watching TV . . . (BTW, I think there should be a law that all remotes be the same.)
Later, she enjoyed the sunshine (yes! it finally stopped raining) and explored the grounds . . .
I'll be blogging about the Author-Go-Round next, but in the meantime, can you guess what this is? Was?
Puppy loved her Mr. Bill toy sooooo much . . . . . . and that's a good thing.
Sometimes when I meet my readers, they hand me one of my books to sign and it will be tattered. "I've read it over and over," they explain apologetically.
OMG! That is heaven to an author's ears. I LOVE it when I see one of my books in terrible shape! It means it's been loved. Like Mr. Bill.
Here I am with two fans who have read everything I have ever written and LOVED every single syllable . . . (Okay, okay. So it's my mom and dad. But still, they like my books!)
Here's a book I loved as a kid . . .
My advice to you this week, go tatter a book and make an author happy!!!
Oh and speaking of authors, you must read this by Kerry Madden. It's her journey to authorship and even includes a strange Hollywood side trip.

How is your dental hygiene? Peepy has been eating so much chocolate lately, that she had to go to the dentist. Luckily, there were no cavities . . .
As some of you know, Peeps and I were recently at a cyber promotions retreat . . .
(Above: Peepy entralls the authors with her discourse on quantum physics.)
Yes, it was the very retreat where professionals behaved badly . . .
Well, thank goodness, not all of them! Author Mary Ann Danes had this wonderful blog recipe for Hoppin' John. So Peepy and I made it the other day and it was yummy!!!!
Anyhoo, I love Santa Barbara sooooo much that I'll be there all week. Yes, A WEEK!
It's part of this totally cool thing called the Author-Go-Round. It's sponsored by the Santa Barbara County Education Office and will feature these incredibly young authors . . .
Um. Okay. That's what we USED to look like. Here's us today . . .
Speaking of what we used to look like, it was Retro Profile Picture Week over at Facebook. Here's me from my USC college days . . .
And finally, do you often wonder if you could make a candle out of ear wax? Now you can find out. Just CLICK HERE
(My family finds this sort of thing gross, but I think it's fascinating. Where do you stand on this issue?)

When last we rendezvoused, we were HERE at THIS blog-worthy workshop . . .
In addition to meeting wonderful, witty, intelligent and attractive (in their own special way) published authors . . .
. . . and made more new friends . . .
Sigh. And it started out with the best intentions . . .

Many people think that authors eat chocolate bon bons all day and whip up fanciful stories in their spare time. And while this is true, they sometimes go to working retreats at historic missions built in 710 BC (or thereabouts).
Prior to heading to the SCBWI Santa Barbara Cyber-Promotional Tools for Published Authors and Illustrators Conference".. (SCBWISBCPTFPAIC). Fellow faculty member, social media expert Greg Pincus and Moi agreed to meet at Peet's Coffee. Sadly, we each went to different ones . . .
(We may know our way around the world wide web, but we can't find our way around Santa Barbara.)
The retreat was held at the amazing Old Mission Santa Barbara . . .
In addition to Greg and Moi, faculty members included Anastasia Suen, Harold Underdown, and everything was organized by the amazing Alexis O'Neill . . .
Published author/students included these good-lookers . . .
Plus this group of super serious scholars . . .

All the cyber knowledge (Twitter, Skyping, Blogging, E-Books, Websites, Chat Rooms, et al), left some looking overwhelmed, yet still intelligent . . .
That's Alexis wearing glasses, above. Participants include Caroline Arnold, Tina Nichols Coury, Mary Ann Dames, Barbara Browning, Diane Browning, Gwen Dandridge, Mary Ann Fraser, Joan Bransfield Graham,Vicki Leon, Jason Lethcoe, Edna Cabcabin Moran, Sherry Shahan, Eric Silverman, Greg Trine, April Wayland, and Joyce Lee Wong
We had some fun, too. There was an art project involving puzzle pieces. However, someone didn't read directions and her puzzle couldn't be taken apart, so she had to make a new one . . .
When Peepy wasn't puzzling or teaching, she was supposed to be paying attention to the workshops. But instead she visited her favorite website . . .
I guess it was a fav among the participants as well . . .

Hey, guess what? Absolutely Maybe is among the Children's Book Awards Nominees. To see the entire list and/or to vote CLICK HERE . . . (Above: New York Times Bestselling author, Jay Asher, channels his inner Maybe)
And finally . . . I've been outed. Sigh. Great, so now the ENTIRE world knows. You can read about it at Shrinking Violet Promotions . . .
NEXT BLOG: SCBWI Faculty SMACKDOWN. Yes! a HUGE fight, with casualties. Find out who was left standing.

Okay, so LITERALLY, at this VERY MOMENT, I'm at the SCBWI Santa Barbara Cyber-Promotional Tools for Published Authors and Illustrators Conference" (SCBWISBCPTFPAIC) . . .
I'm teaching blogging workshops and at RIGHT NOW AS I AM WRITING THIS, attractive and witty published authors are watching me post this!!!!
(Above: Attractive and witty published authors.)
Okay. No pressure.
Hey, so, did you hear?
We have a brand new National Ambassador for Young People's Literature (NAFYPL) . . .
(Above: NAFRPL, Katherine Paterson has not yet had time to sit for her official photo with Peepy, who's the NAFYPPE**. So instead we included this candid shot of the two of them.)
In a New York Times interview, Katherine Paterson said you should read aloud to your children . . .
(Above: That's me with my kids. Or maybe not.)
Anyway, our new NAFYPL said, “You can read out loud, and if you’re exhausted or crying so hard because you know that Charlotte is going to die in the next chapter,” she said, “you can turn it over to the kid to read the next part.”
I agree. In fact, here's what happened a few years ago when I read aloud to Son. CLICK HERE for the DRAMATIC TRUE STORY.
Then scroll down to read what Newbery winner Linda Sue Park had to say about it . . .
Note: At the time I read to Son, I hadn't met Linda Sue in person. We are now friends, even though I tried to kill her once, and later tried to make her barf . . .
(Above: Moi, J.K. Rowling's editor and mine, too, Arthur Levine and Linda Sue trying not to hurl.)
And so, we say farewell to the wonderful, irreverent and first-ever Ambassador, Jon Scieszka . . .
. . . and welcome the amazing Ms. Paterson.
Next blog, I'll blog about posting this blog during the blogging workshop.
