after having read the book, i was really looking forward to seeing the film adaptation of "the time traveler's wife".  one thing you need to know right up front, it is a bit confusing.  but that is no fault of the film, it's just the nature of the story.  all in all, the film did a very good job of explaining the peculiarities of the lead character's time traveling ways.  the film stars eric bana and the apparent star of all past & future romantic films, rachel mcadams ("the notebook").  is it a great film?  certainly not.  but if you're looking for a sweet, romantic film, this will fill the bill.  the basic gist of it is that the time traveler, henry (bana) suffers from "chrono-impairment", which sends him hurtling through past, present and future without notice.  he first meets clare (mcadams) when she is a young girl.  one thing the film accomplishes that the book does not is that uncomfortableness of this grown man who is in love with the woman who eventually becomes his wife.  there were definitely bits of the book that never made it into the film, a few that i missed, but a few others that i did not.  don't look for some academy award winning film here, but it is definitely an enjoyable way to spend 2 hours.  and for those familiar with the book who may be wondering about the level of nudity portrayed in the film, it is minimal at best.  not a film that would be enjoyed by young children, but not so offensive that teens could not go see it.

the hogwarts crew is at it again, this time in the latest film "harry potter & the half-blood prince".  first of all let me say, good lord this film is LONG.  but that's alright, because it's definitely a lot of fun.  at this point, it has been so long ago that i read the books that i have essentially forgotten a lot of the crucial plot details.  i have to wonder though, if you haven't read the books, or seen the previous films, would you fully understand what is going on in the film.  all that aside, i think even a potter neophyte would enjoy this film.  what i DO remember from the book is that i anticipated the scene in the lake cavern was going to scare me.  and while on a scare level, it's definitely not "nightmare on elm street", but the people in the theatre definitely jumped when things got crazy.  shmoo did not accompany me to this film, deeming it "too scary".  in fact, she's only seen the first film, and even that she only saw in the safety of her own living room.  it's definitely not too scary for young kids, unless your child is like mine and won't even go on the "peter pan" ride at disneyland because it's dark inside.

as for the film itself, two of my favorite actors, alan rickman & helena bonham carter really shine.  helena bonham carter is outstanding as bellatrix lestrange, her character bordering more on the sinister level of a vampire than a witch gone bad.  as twisted as her character in "sweeney todd", she seems to have a knack for playing the truly strange.  for trivia's sake, there are 3 actors who appear in this film that appear in both films, alan rickman, helena bonham carter and timothy spall.  the only disappointment in the film is that we do not see voldemort in his current incarnation, but we do see him as the child, tom riddle.  in fact, playing the 11 yr old tom riddle is the nephew of ralph fiennes, hero fiennes-tiffin.  brilliant casting, considering that uncle ralph played voldemort in the previous films.

it's definitely a film that is worth seeing in the theater.  the special effects & cinematography being key to seeing it on the big screen.  and as the harry potter franchise winds down, it's sort of sad to see it drawing to a close.  but there is one glimmer of hope on the horizon.  the last book, "harry potter and the deathly hallows" will end up being done in two films instead of one.  and while the jaded will say it's purely for the money, i think fans will appreciate it.  one thing that has been a problem with all of the films is trying to cram very large books into a single film.  it will be nice to not only prolong our time with harry, but to do the book justice on screen.

again, the $6 ho has gone upscale.  i'd only do this for you! yes, you!  i paid primo bucks to see this at a non-matinee AND in 3-D. and yes, kittens, seeing the 3-D version of this movie costs extra.  now, before you go all wal-mart on me, fork over the extra dough to see the 3-D version and sneak in all your movie snacks to make up for the cost.  there are few things you can count on in life.  bad summer television programming (don't EVEN get me started on "i'm a celebrity, get me out of here!"  what a horror!), a hangover after cheap hooch, pamela anderson's boobs and......a great disney pixar film.  disney pixar does not disappoint, and this film is no exception.  in fact, i'm going to go on record and say, this is one of my favorite disney films...ever.  it's really got everything going for it.  the main character, carl fredrickson is an elderly man who feels like he failed in his promise to his wife to live a life of adventure.  now with her passing, he's determined to keep that promise.  there is an endearing and humorous cast of characters, the young wilderness scout who accidently gets taken along for the ride, the talking dog who is less than bright, but full of heart, and of course....an evil  nemesis.  this movie is funny, touching, exciting and just a whole bunch of fun.  whether you're a kid, or a big kid at heart, it's something you'll enjoy.  here's a clip...

i've been feeling like crying since yesterday when the california state supreme court upheld the ban on same-sex marriage.  the funny thing is, i'm not even gay.  but that doesn't really matter, does it?  what does matter is that i have never been able to get it through my head why people think that some groups should have less rights than others.  if you're a law-abiding, tax-paying american citizen, shouldn't you be entitled to all the same rights as everyone else?  i mean, gays and lesbians pay their taxes, serve proudly in the military, own businesses, work for a living, have children, etc.  but because of rampant prejudice i have to stand here and say, "no.  you do not have the same rights i do."  that's what makes me cry.  but it's time to stop crying.  it's time to be pissed off.  REALLY pissed off.  african-americans (and their supporters) had to stand up, be willing to risk their lives and shout from the rooftops "i AM equal."  i think everyone in the entire united states would agree that we are all equal, until it comes to marriage.  and then the rats go scurrying back to hide behind their bibles.  instead of saying "i believe...."  they say, "the bible says....".  it is now time to fight.  to be angry.  and to say, "i will not allow gays and lesbians to be treated as second-class citizens.  period."  here's a great video...

May 23, 2009 - Saturday
last night shmoo came to me and said, "i have something to tell you that might make you mad."  thinking she'd spilled something, drawn on something or otherwise did something terrible, i braced myself.  instead she says, "so-and-so and i are girlfriends.  real girlfriends, like the kind who kiss."  to which i said, "so?"  she repeated it again, making sure i understood her meaning, that she was "in love" with another girl.  i told her that i was a little mad.  but i was mad because she thought i'd be mad at her for basically telling me she was gay.  i told her that she should know better, that i have lots of friends, friends she knows, that are gay and that it doesn't matter.  that what matters to me is that she finds someone to love who loves her back.  i thought it was rather amusing that she specifically was testing the waters to see how i felt.  very cute.

i realized i had not updated in regards to my appointments with the rheumatologist.  after bloodwork (vitamin D deficiency was found) and x-rays (arthritis in the knees & hands, shocker) the doctor gave me flexeril.  he and i discussed, and i let him know, that i was not particularly interested in having something to make me pain-free during the day.  because honestly, if i keep moving and keep myself distracted, i can pretty much ignore, or at least minimalize my awareness of the pain.  my main problem was being able to sleep at night because of pain issues.  so, here i am, taking flexeril, which is a muscle relaxant.  so far, so good.  i wasn't able to take it right away when it was prescribed because i had a NASTY cold, and was taking nyquil.  nyquil and flexeril, a prescription for coma.  lol  anyway, i'm taking it every night, for the most part.  and so far, so good.  while i'm awake i can tell there is still pain, but i start getting that warm feeling that lets me know the meds are working.  and i haven't really had trouble getting to sleep because of pain.  hopefully this will be what i need, at least for the foreseeable future.  i'm sure as things progress, the meds will too.  but for now, i'm happy to get some relief.  he also told me that the anti-inflamms i was taking would really do me no good for my particular condition.  which of course annoyed the crap out of me, since i'd been through months (even years) of taking every anti-inflammatory that came out.  (thanks to working for both orthopedic surgeons and a podiatrist)  so there you have it.  at the very least, a solution for the time being.  i want to thank everybody out there with similar issues for giving me tons of information, feedback and support.
May 22, 2009 - Friday
let me say right off the bat, i enjoyed this movie.  that being said, it could have been better.  first of all, jonah hill who is in the beginning of the film has only one scene.  he's one funny guy, and i'm surprised he wasn't utilized more.  same goes for ricky gervais, his 2 appearances are basically used to bookend the film.  the best thing about the movie?  hank azaria.  hands down.  this guy can do no wrong, i mean, is there a film he's been in where he doesn't steal the scene?  who can forget him as the houseboy in "the birdcage"?  it would have been fun to see the original guards somehow worked into the film.  (mickey rooney, dick van dyke & bill cobbs)  all in all though, it is the quintessential summer family film.  christopher guest (a.k.a. mr jamie lee curtis) makes an appearance as ivan the terrible.  i wish he could have been allowed to shine like he did in "the princess bride" and "this is spinal tap", etc.  someone new who did make the most of his role was SNL regular, bill hader as general custer.  the original "night at the museum" cast that does appear again are owen wilson, jackie coogan, robin williams and of course...the capuchin monkey that slaps ben stiller around.  and this time he's joined by a NASA space monkey by the name of Abel.  it's definitely worth seeing, loads of fun, and the kids will definitely enjoy it.  on a picky note....the moviemakers behind this film should have done a little more research, one particularly famous painting, "american gothic" appears in the smithsonian.  sadly, that painting resides in chicago.  oh well, just being picky.

first up, here's hank azaria in "the birdcage" as agador, the guatemalan houseboy.

we had this awesome thing called "scripted television".  now, for you young'uns, that's a tv program that stars actors.  and real actors, not people pretending to live their real lives in front of the camera.  jon & kate didn't have eight, little people didn't live in the big world, they were playing extras on saturday morning live tv shows and the hills were alive with the sound of music, not with a spencer and heidi.  now, i'm just as guilty, if not more so of being sucked into the reality tv show vortex.  if there's a housewife, it doesn't matter if it's in atlanta, new york, orange county or new jersey, i'm watching.  and hating myself for being obsessed with it.  there was a time when we had well-written shows like, i don't know, "the love boat", "dukes of hazzard", "three's company", etc.  now that i think about it, scripted or not, it's all pretty much crap.  and that's fine.  there's certainly nothing wrong with a purely mind-numbing dose of escapism.  don't like escapism?  read a book.  take in a play.  go watch a documentary on PBS.  there's a time and a place for all of it.  and lord knows i'm an avid NPR listener.  but sometimes, thinking is highly over-rated, and everyone needs a break.  speaking of breaks, how about a little of this...
