This will be my first photo lesson and it will cover the basic technical aspects of photography.
Aperture - The aperture is the opening in your camera lens that allows light in. The aperture is represent by f-stops (1.8, 2, 2.2, 2.8, 3.5...). These numbers represent how big the opening is. The smaller the number, the bigger the opening. Just remember that it's reversed. Aperture can be changed by the photographer to control two things. The first thing that aperture controls is the amount of light that comes into the camera. The smaller the opening in the lens (the bigger the number), the less light that comes into the camera. The bigger the opening (the smaller the number), the more light comes into the camera. The second thing that aperture controls is the amount of the photo that is in focus. The smaller the number, the less that is going to be in focus. When using a bigger number, this will allow for more of the photo to be in focus. (When taking pictures of say, the mountains, this does not apply. The amount of the photo in focus only applies if you are taking a photograph of something fairly close up, where the subject could be in focus and the background could not). Below is a simple diagram i made representing the aperture and f-stops.

Shutter Speed - Shutter speed is the amount of time your camera's sensor (light collecting device) is exposed to light. When talking about shutter speed, the times may seem a bit fast, but it is completely normal. The longer the shutter speed, the more light that will be entering your camera. Generally speaking, 1/5th of a second is a long (slow) shutter speed. When taking pictures in daylight, a shutter speed of 1/100-1/500th of a second is pretty common depending on the situation you're in. The less light that is available, the longer your shutter speed will need to be (to take in more light). This is why when taking pictures during the day, shutter speeds don't need to be very long. Shutter speeds can range anywhere from 30 seconds + to 1/8000 of a second. Below is an example of various shutter speeds and how it affects the brightness of a photo. The ISO and aperture were kept the same but the shutter speed was lessened each time in these photos.

ISO - Earlier, I mentioned the sensor when talking about shutter speed. The sensor is the device in your camera that collects light. The photographer can change the ISO so that the sensor is more sensitive to light, or less sensitive to light. Typical ISO ratings are anywhere from 50-1600 (going in increments that typical double (100, 200, 400, 800, 1600)). The higher the number, the more sensitive the senor is to light. This means that if you are using a high ISO, you will not have to expose the senor to light as long to get a good exposure. If you were using a lower ISO (100 or 200) in the same situation, you would need to expose the sensor longer (slower shutter speed, say 1/5th of a second) because it's not as sensitive to light.
These three things combined, make your overall exposure of an image. You can't change one thing without changing the other if you want to keep the same exposure (brightness) of an image.
Changing the ISO - If you lower your ISO, then you would need to have a longer shutter speed to expose the senor to more light since it's not as sensitive. Or you could make your aperture larger, to let more light in and then the shutter speed might not need to be changed.
Changing the shutter speed - If you made your shutter speed faster (1/100th of a second to 1/400th of a second) then you would need to increase the ISO and make the aperture larger to let more light in and keep the same exposure.
Changing the aperture - If you made your aperture smaller (larger number) then you would need to increase the ISO or make the shutter speed longer since you're not letting as much light in with a smaller opening.
Below are some examples that demonstrate the variations of shutter speed, ISO, and aperture, while keeping the same exposure.
f/2.8 ISO400 1/10th of a second

f/9 ISO400 1 second

f/5 ISO100 1.3 Seconds

f/4.5 ISO1000 1/10th of a second

All of the setting on these photos are different, but the exposure is the same. The only warning about increasing the ISO is that your photos will become grainy so try to stay away from high ISO's.
That's all for this lesson. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF ANY OF THIS DOESN'T MAKE SENSE OR IF YOU WANT ME TO EXPLAIN IT MORE. AND PLEASE LET ME KNOW HOW EFFECTIVE THIS LESSON IS. I WANT TO KNOW IF I NEED TO PUT THINGS IN MORE SIMPLE TERMS. HOWEVER, THIS IS PROBABLY THE MOST CONFUSING LESSON. THANKS FOR READING. AGAIN, COMMENTS WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

If you did not know this already, I have been taking pictures for about five years now and I was horrible when I first started out. I still have a TON to learn and by doing this blog, I am in no way saying that I'm a good photographer. I simply love photography and would like to share my knowledge with others. Every week, or every other week, I will be posting a blog focusing on a certain aspect of how to improve your photography with examples of what I'm talking about. My first blog will simply be a technical lesson. I'm going to try to keep the technical stuff to a minimum in my lessons, but if it comes up, then you will know what I'm talking about. I will be posting the technical lesson in a couple days [or maybe even later tonight].

so garrett and i had an interesting day today with the boat. mhm.
so first of all. we took my boat of out the garage. we cleaned out under the engine becuase there was a lot of nasty water in there from our last trip. then garrett went home real quick to get a battery for the boat. and then he came back and we put it in.

and then we hooked up the hose to the boat in order to run it.

we turned the ignition on. but all we got was this really fast clicking noise from the starter. no movement from the motor.

we thought we were doing something wrong. so we double checked everyting. and concluded that we weren't doing anything wrong. then we both figured that there wasn't enough juice in the motor to power the starter. so garrett went home and got a different battery. and then we put it in.

we turned the ignition on. and we actually got a almost start up. but even in the second battery we had the same problem. figuring that we had no batteries left, we took the battery out of garretts truck. hoping that third times a charm, we turned the ignition on, turned the key, and it started up beautifuly with the motor running.

and the water squirting.

it only took us about three hours. but mission accomplished.

a new blog. is much needed. alright. things haven't been going too bad lately. my grades are kind of slipping right now. but i'm kind of trying to get those back up. i don't think it's too late. mr baas class is impossilbe for me. i guess not for everyone else though. i thought it was just him but everyone else is getting a good grade. hmm. i need to boost my iq. anyway. that's what's up with school today. we went rockclimbing today for wilderness challenge class. that was pretty awesome. i only did four climbs. even though i was supposed to do five. but that's alright. i was sad because mia had to leave early because she wasn't feeling good. i had no one to ride on the bus with back to school. it's all chill though. i am inclined to mention the crazy weather that has been going on lately. i hate california weather. becuase it is always hot. and sunny. and i hate the sun. i hate hot. i like cold. before yesterday. i thought i had seen strange weather. but yesterday was insane. i think cerritos and lakewood area had a miniature tornado. yeah. a tornado. i was in sixth period and we went outside. the sky was filled with grey, the wind was blowing like crazy, and the air turned to dust. it was amazing. i can't believe that italy is going to be here in like 10 days or something like that. i am so pumped that i am going. especially since mia and katie are going to. it's going to be a blast. i still need to go out and buy stuff for the trip like memory cards. i figure i'm going to take about four thousand shots. that will be good. gah. it is going to be amazing. and all of you that are not going should be jealous. mhm. let's see. what else has been going on. my friend from canada came for a week and i got to hang out with him for a couple days. it was sweet because i haven't seen him in like three years. good times. umm. mothers day is coming up. and i don't know what i'm going to do. i was told that i should make her a card or something. but i'm not too sure that i want to do that. just because it would make me even more sad or something. i should just sleep all day that day. that would be nice. i have a new music love. the blood brothers. mhm. they are very super good. the album is called young machetes. listen to it if you get a chance. mewithoutYou is still one of my favorite bands of all time. but the blood brothers are amazing. and don't trash the album the first time you listen to it. becuase you probably won't like it very much. listen to it again. you will grow to love it more and more. mmk. well i think that's it for right now. i'm sorry that this became such a long blog. i have just been ranting about what's going on. thank you very much if you have read this far. well. that's all for now. ciao.
