Current mood:  fascinated
There are numerous devices used by paranormal investigators to facilitate technical "communication" with the spirit realm.  A few weeks ago, when I found an app on my iPhone called "Ghost Radar," I bought it because I thought it'd be fun to play around with.

Fast forward to a couple of days ago.  My manager, Apryl, and I were staying at a hotel during our visit to California.  When we checked into the hotel, the front desk personnel told us that there had been reports of ghostly activity on the second floor of the hotel.  Serendipitously, our room was on the second floor!

That evening (and several times thereafter), Apryl and I decided to switch on Ghost Radar ... and the results were a bit spooky!

Here are some examples:

I was in Los Angeles to tape an appearance on CNN's "Larry King Live."  (Yes, I said TAPE an appearance of "Larry King LIVE" -- an oxymoron, I know!  LOL.)  Also appearing on the show were Dan Aykroyd and his father, Peter.  The evening before I taped the show, Ghost Radar said the names "Dan" and "Peter"!

While surfing channels on the TV in our room, Apryl and I happened upon the movie, "Fred Claus," in which actor Vince Vaughn plays Santa Claus' brother.  Much of the action takes place at the North Pole ... and soon after the movie appeared on our TV screen, Ghost Radar said, back-to-back, "weather" and "frozen"!

Just after returning from the "Larry King Live" taping, we switched on Ghost Radar and it said "King."  Not king, with a small "k" ... but King, with a capital "K"!  (The application not only speaks words, it spells them out on the iPhone's screen, as well.)

The night before we were leaving to return home to Atlanta, Ghost Radar said the name "Bronwyn."  Certainly NOT a common name.  The next morning, while standing at the hotel's front desk, I noticed a rack of business cards for members of the hotel's staff ... and one of the front desk manager's names is BRONWYN!  (NOW, THAT ONE REALLY GOT MY ATTENTION!)

My definition of "paranormal" is this: we cannot explain or understand certain things that happen, but neither can we DENY that they occur.

I cannot explain or understand how Ghost Radar "randomly" said the things that it said ... and I also cannot deny that some of the words that it spoke were eerily appropos to situations that were happening in my life at the time that it said those words!

Coincidences?  Perhaps ... but definitely very compelling!

Decide for yourself ... is Ghost Radar just a fun iPhone app?  Or is it something more???

Current mood:  happy
Last night, I received an E-mail from my dear friend, Carole, regarding a cat named Roni who was on "death row" at an animal shelter in Los Angeles.  Roni was scheduled to be euthanized today (10/16) and when I saw the E-mail, I swung into action.

First, I called the shelter in LA to make certain Roni was still there and still alive.  The answer was "yes" to both of my questions.  I told the lady that I spoke with not to euth the cat, that I was going to do everything in my power to get him saved.  She informed me that his time was up at 5 PM Pacific Time on Friday, 10/16.

I immediately began posting Roni's sad story and urgent pleas for help on social networking sites, like MySpace, Facebook and Twitter.  So many people responded by reposting my posts and trying to help.  My heart always feels good when I witness the compassion, generosity and humanity that dwells inside many people.

Long story short, Roni was rescued within about an hour.  I relayed the joyful news all across the networking sites and, together, we celebrated Roni's rescue.  Perhaps it's a small victory, considering that millions of animals die in shelters every year, but I focused on the fact that RONI IS ALIVE AND GETTING A NEW, FOREVER HOME!

This morning, I noticed a comment left for me on one of the networking sites.  It read:

So, the person that adopted the cat, did so because of your message Chip? Just curious.

I was a bit troubled by that comment.  Did the person who left it think that I was trying to take all the credit for Roni's rescue?  Patting myself on the back and playing the hero?  Or was he/she truly "just curious" and happy that Roni's life was saved?

I have a deep and abiding love for animals.  I assist with animal rescue and advocacy as often as my schedule will allow.  I particularly focus on "at risk" animals ... those who are in crisis or are slated to be put to death in the near-future.

But I am just one person.  Sometimes, it takes many people to bring about a happy ending.  And the "ending" for Roni was happy.  In reality, the cat got a reprieve and a new beginning.  Praise God!

I didn't save Roni.  WE ALL DID!  Our collective love of animals and our respect for life did it.  Did my messages on social networking sites help to make this possible?  I pray to God that they did, but do I know for sure that it happened because of those posts?  No, I do not.

What I do know is this: I didn't sit idly by and let Roni be euthanized.  And neither did many of you.  We did what we could in a communal effort to spare his life.  And WE succeeded!  WE ALL SUCCEEDED BECAUSE RONI IS ALIVE TODAY AND HE WILL BE ALIVE THROUGHOUT MANY TOMORROWS!

In the future, you will undoubtedly see many more cries for help coming from me.  I'll be asking for prayers for those in need.  I'll be begging you to help animals or children or senior citizens who need our help.  And I'll do so because I care and I try to do whatever I can, even in small ways, to make this old world a better place.

To say that I love everyone whose heart was touched by Roni's story would be a vast understatement.  Thank you for helping to save his life.  If you have the resources and the love available to adopt an animal whose life is in jeopardy at an animal shelter, please do so.  TODAY!  Before time runs out...

May God continue to bless us all.  ^i^

Current mood:  blessed

Tomorrow is my birthday ... I'll be 55 years old.  The big "double nickel"!  Woo hoo!

I wrote the following piece a few years ago as part of an article for a magazine.  It's the story of how I came into this world ... and my way of saying "thank you" to my parents, God and His angels.

(((BIG HUGS))) and much love to everyone!

The universe certainly didn’t make it easy for me to be born into this lifetime!  If the theory that we choose our parents before we incarnate into their lives is true, then I definitely chose a path of great resistance.

My mother, Carolyn, married my father, Robert (“Bob”) Coffey, in the fall of 1940.  Two years later, she gave birth to a son, Bobby Jr., who lived only 21 hours before dying due to complications during his delivery.  Sadly, my parents were told that the odds of them being able to have another child were slim-to-none.

Shortly thereafter, my father enlisted in the United States Navy as World War II raged throughout the world.  During a typhoon in the Pacific Ocean off the island of Okinawa, the ship that my father was aboard sank during a typhoon.  Bob, who was a cook, floated overboard on a collapsible kitchen table and was marooned on a coral reef until he was found by a rescue ship several days later.

Several years later, mother developed cancer in one of her ovaries and it was surgically removed.  My parents resigned themselves to the fact that they would probably never have a biological child.

Despite the odds, when Carolyn visited her doctor in late 1953, complaining of abdominal maladies, she received the shocking news that she was pregnant.

“You’re crazy!” she told the doctor.  “You know I can’t have children.”  Unfazed by her reaction, he merely smiled and told her to “wait a few months and you’ll see I’m right.”

And right he was.  Miraculously, there I was, growing inside this woman, who, for all intents and purposes, should not have been able to have a child.

Mother’s due date came and went, but she did not deliver.  Finally, her doctor determined that I was trapped by scar tissue that had formed on her uterus following my brother’s traumatic birth over 12 years earlier.  An emergency C-section was quickly scheduled and Mother was taken to the operating room.

While on the operating table, Mother’s blood pressure took a nosedive.  She remembered hearing a nurse say “We’re losing her,” then suddenly two beautiful, glowing angels in white robes appeared on either side of her.  They took her by the arms and started to lift her off the operating table, but she resisted.  “Please don’t take me,” she pleaded with them.  “I don’t want to leave my baby.”

The angels looked at each other, then smiled down at her and disappeared.   As her soul was placed back into her body, Mother let out a piercing scream and in the next instant, she heard me begin to wail as I made my dramatic entrance into the living world.  “Is my baby all right?” she asked.  “You’re baby is fine, Carolyn,” the doctor told her. “It’s a boy.”  “Thank you, God,” Mother weakly muttered, yet without a doubt, I know that He heard her.

I was baptized into the Catholic faith at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Elmira.  At the age of just six weeks, it became necessary for me to undergo surgery to correct a serious urological obstruction.  My parents were told that there was a strong possibility that I would not survive the operation.

Upon hearing this, Mother took me directly across the street from the doctor’s office at St. Joseph’s Hospital and into the Church.  There, she made a solemn promise to God: “If You let my child live, I will do everything in my power to encourage him to serve You,” she prayed.  Mother’s prayer was answered; I survived the surgery.  And I truly believe that I am fulfilling the promise my mother made to God, on that brisk October day in 1954, by doing the work that I now do.  ^i^

Current mood:  thankful

I didn't say anything because I didn't want to overreact ... or be a "downer" ... or allow myself to even consider the unthinkable.

Yesterday, I found a suspicious "spot" on the pad of Molly's front paw.  My heart sank as my mind registered the fact that it might be another tumor.

Mast Cell Tumors, which is the kind of cancer Molly had, are not uncommon ... and once a dog has one MCT, the chance of another "popping up" is always a horrible possibility.

I immediately called our vet and made an appointment for this morning.

The wonderful folks at Georgia Veterinary Specialists greeted Molly, Kenny and me warmly when we arrived.  It's gloriously obvious how much they care for animals -- many of the staff members got down on the floor to show their affection to Molly.  And like the sweetheart of a Chocolate Lab she is, she "ate it up"!

Thank the Good Lord above, the place I found on her foot was NOT another tumor!  I am not one bit embarrassed to say that I was just being a nervous and paranoid doggy daddy.

But I was doing what the vet asked me to do: examine my dogs once a week for any suspicious lumps, bumps or growths.  Cancer is the #1 killer of dogs and the sooner it is discovered, the better the odds are for a dog's long term survival.

So, PLEASE, do what I am going to do and check your pets weekly.  And love them!  Above all else, love them!  They truly are gifts from God!

My Molly girl is okay for now.  And I can finally start to breathe again!

I received the following E-mail from Merrissa, one of the firefighters featured on last Monday's episode of Paranormal State entitled "The Firehouse."  (I received permission from Merrissa to post her E-mail to me on this blog.)

Knowing that PRS and I were able to make things better for the brave and amazing people we met at the firehouse made me feel so good inside.

Not long ago, Internet message boards, blogs and radio shows were buzzing about an "exposé," offered up by a client featured on an episode of Paranormal State.

Well, I am pleased to present the "flip side of the coin" -- a group of wonderful people in New Jersey who genuinely feel that they benefited from the help that was provided to them by PRS and Paranormal State.

hey chip,
how have you been? i just wanted to say thank you so much
for everything... the firehouse seems like it's just an all around more
positive atmosphere since you got joey's message out. his biological son
joined not to long ago and he says he can definitely tell his dad is
happy. jason is also a much happier person, you gave him the closure he
so desperately needed. i personally have to thank you for that because
now i don't worry about him as much. i know you get these emails by the
hundreds every day but if by any chance you actually see this i hope
you know how much you helped clementon fire rescue, joey, jason, pj,
and myself. you always have friends here : )

love,
firefighter merrissa

p.s. we miss you guys. you were truly amazing down to earth people.

It is my sincere hope that God continues to bless everyone at Clementon Fire Rescue and keeps them safe as they put their lives on the line to help others.

Much love, Merrissa ... and thank you.

About a week-and-a-half ago, I traveled to Kentucky to tape an episode of Paranormal State.  While I was there, I met an amazing dog ... he's a black Lab mix with an amazing spirit and lots of personality.

Relatives of the family we were working with on the case had rescued the dog from folks who mistreated him.  He didn't have a name so I named him SHADOW.

The family in Kentucky agreed to keep and care for Shadow until I can find a good home for him.  I spoke with them today -- they were hit by a vicious winter storm and are without utilities right now -- but they continue to take care of Shadow.

I'm putting a check in the mail to them TODAY to cover Shadow's food and care expenses until WE can find him a forever home.

And that's how I need your help.  TOGETHER, LET'S FIND A LOVING, CARING, PERFECT HOME FOR SHADOW!

He's just a baby ... probably only a few months old.  He's solid black in color and will probably weigh 60+ pounds when fully grown.  He's a hearty eater and will need room to romp and play since he's very energetic.  He appears to be great with kids and other animals.  Shadow is an amazing being with a HUGE soul!

Ryan Buell and I will help cover all the necessary expenses to get Shadow from Kentucky to wherever his new home may be ... so, LET'S POST AND REPOST AND REPOST AGAIN UNTIL SHADOW HAS A HOME!

Please contact me ASAP at chipcoffey@aol.com if you or someone you know is willing to give Shadow the life he deserves.

May God bless everyone who helps make a miracle for Shadow!

xxxooo,
Chip

UPDATE - 1:10 PM EST

SHADOW HAS A NEW HOME!

A wonderful lady named Jenny has agreed to provide Shadow with a new home in Maryland!  She will be traveling to Kentucky to get Shadow in the next few days.

Many thanks to everyone who offered to help provide (or find) a home for this loving, amazing boy!

I LOVE YOU ALL!

GOD IS GOOD!

Current mood:  excited

YOU ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY DO NOT WANT TO MISS THE TWO EPISODES OF PARANORMAL STATE THAT AIR TONIGHT (MONDAY, FEBRUARY 2) AT 10:00 AND 10:30 EST ON A&E!

Here's a synopsis of the shows:

CHURCH OF THE DAMNED  (10 PM EST)
Jason and his family can no longer do renovations of an abandoned Kansas church, especially after they found their father in the basement crying and frightened because of the menacing activity. PRS comes in to investigate why this house of God has been known around town as a church of evil. But their efforts are thwarted when Ryan, himself, is physically attacked by a demon. Father Bob Bailey and psychic/medium Chip Coffey join forces to battle the satanic entities.

THE FIREHOUSE  (10:30 PM EST)
Everyone from the chief to the trainees at the Clementon Fire Department is convinced that the ghost of a former member is haunting their firehouse.  But why is "Joe" sticking around years after his death? With the help of psychic/medium Chip Coffey, PRS peels away the layers of an emotional story--including some details that the brave firefighters of Clementon had planned to keep hidden.

Please feel free to repost this message to all your family and friends!

A REQUEST FOR HELP - RYAN BUELL

We're here in Quincy, Illinois working with a family that is under severe demonic attack.  At 10:30pm EST we are looking to create a worldwide prayer vigil for this decent family as we assist them - alongside clergy - in a house exorcism.  This is a desperate case where this family is at the end of their rope.

With me are the PRS team, Lorraine Warren, Father Bob Bailey, Chad Calek and others.  We've come together to try and rid this family of torment once and for all.  Please join us if you can.

Love,
Chip
