Once you have been tagged, you must write a blog containing 10 weird, random things (facts, habits, goals) about yourself. At the end, select 10 people to be tagged, listing their names and the reason you chose them. Send them a message (You’re it!) and instruct them to read your blog. You can’t tag the person who tagged you. Since you can’t tag me back, let me know when you’ve posted your blog so I can see your answers. Thanks for playing and have fun!!! (Well, I probably won’t pass this on, since I can’t really think of any people who would do this...) 1. My goal in life is to make enough money so that I can have a theater in my house. 2. I’m becoming very obsessed with perfume...it started when I found out there were some Lovecraft-inspired scents at Black Phoenix Alchemical Laboratory. Of course, being the fanatic that I am, I had to smell some of them to see if I thought they were pertinent. And from there, I moved onto CB I Hate Perfume, and after I found out that Christopher Brosius was the creative nose behind Demeter...well, I’m waiting on my Demeter order right now. After that, I’ll be ordering some (cheaper!) decants of I Hate Perfume’s Black March and Wild Hunt water perfumes and a grab bag of 8 BPAL imps (what they call their samples) from The Perfumed Court. I think I’ve created a monster! 3. I have a bulletin board in my room with all kinds of little mementos stuck on it: tickets, brochures, about 20 fortune cookie papers, an IOU from Dad, and a drink token from some bar, which I found in a purse at a rummage sale. 4. Speaking of fortune cookies, once I got one that didn’t have a fortune in it. How sad. 5. And speaking of rummage sales...I love to rummage about and find all kinds of weird stuff really cheap. 6. It’s pretty well-known that I love to go to Goodwill. However, recently I’ve been a little burned out. I was spoiled when someone let their entire Matador Records CD collection go, but now there’s hardly a thing in the music. I did get a King Crimson LP recently, though! 7. Speaking of Goodwill, if it wasn’t for Goodwill and the random person who gave away their copy of Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks’ Pig Lib, my favorite band would still be AFI instead of Pavement. And I wouldn’t have gone to see the Jicks last night...and I wouldn’t have an enormous crush on Stephen Malkmus. And a whole lot of other related music things wouldn’t have come to my attention. So, thank you to whoever it was that really didn’t want their Matador collection anymore. 8. Yeah, it finally happened: my favorite band is no longer AFI, and my favorite song is no longer AFI’s "This Time Imperfect". It’s "Tender" by Monaco now. 9. I love to go cruising up and down 229 when it’s a nice day out, windows down and radio loud. This is the setting I was in when I discovered that "Tender" was my favorite song. 10. That day when we got a ton of snow this year, my neighbors’ miniature horses were out in the 8-inch-deep snow looking for food. (They never get fed...they have to forage, and they’ve almost picked everything over by now.) I went out with two carrots, one for each, and the dark brown one took only one bite. I stood out for another ten minutes trying to get them to eat them, but they wouldn’t. So I left the carrots in the snow, hoping they’d eat them...that really makes me sad. I see them every morning out my window while I’m doing my makeup, and they usually look depressed and hungry. (The blog title came from something SM said last night at the show. After the first or second song, somebody threw a dollar onstage. He threw it back to them, saying that Southgate House had a "no tipping unless you’re stripping" policy.)

I haven’t ever posted a song as a blog, but I read the first three lines of this song and thought it was appropriate. Plus, I’m going to see them this Sunday, and I’m really happy about that. "Fractions and Feelings" Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks When I think of high school years All the faces are not airbrushed In fact they’re probably far more grotesque than real life as it was Memories, they’re too surprising Because memories they tend to distort and if you want a report I’ll hand it in yesterday Take me to a higher place Fractions and feelings And the cops put a stop to all of our plots The way that they walked and the way that they talked Grow down you grow down Memories define the mind’s DJ So come along honey and let me say that’s what I’m on about Yes we all evolve in haste It’s a race you never finish The grace does not diminish The pace until the game is over Of course you’re deeper than a team But I hear the same chatter You’re just the same matter I’ve known with a few more years on your face Take me to a higher place With your fractions and your feelings And the cops put a stop to all of our plots The way that they talk and the way that they walk They grow down they grow down Memories define the mind’s DJ So come along honey and let me say that’s what I’m on about I hope I never see, I know I won’t ever go

So, if I'm nice enough to lend you something, please treat it with the same respect that I would show your stuff. I'm usually very eager to share things with others that I think they would like, and on occasion someone lets me borrow something that they think I would like in return. Is it too much to ask to get my stuff back unscathed, without some weird disc-killing residue on it or a beat-up case with a shoeprint on it? I mean, come on. It was brand new when I loaned it out, only watched twice. Geez. I'm not pointing fingers, because I'm not sure who specifically did it. But things like that make me less inclined toward further loans. Just saying, you know?

I bought a couple movies from Goodwill last Saturday, one of them being Die Mommie Die!, and I watched it today. For most of the film, I sat there with a big grin on my face (not realizing it until my facial muscles started to hurt). It was hilarious and campy, and although I'm not too familiar with the movies Busch's screenplay pays homage to, I caught a few references. It's the kind of movie that I think Bo would like ^_^. (Not to mention that Natasha Lyonne, who plays Edith, was also in Party Monster as Brooke.) And then, after that, Laura watched Epic Movie, and I sat reading an Avon catalog in the background. I think that, even without actively watching most of the movie, I lost more brain cells than Paris Hilton was born with. So, to atone for viewing that, I'm off to go read some Tolstoy.

So last night the power went out. Laura and I played Connect Four by candlelight. After a while, we all lay (lied? laid?) down and I plugged up some speakers to my mp3 player. Mom and I listened to the Atlanta Radio Theater Company's version of "The Colour Out of Space" by H.P. Lovecraft and a reading of Lovecraft's "Cool Air". (Laura fell asleep within the first five minutes.) Last time the power went out, I listened to a reading of "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" (by Lovecraft again), and I've realized that it's actually kind of nice to sit around in the dark listening to a story. The dim light of candles and the total darkness outside really add atmosphere to horror stories and weird tales ^_^. I've been downloading lots of episodes of old radio shows like Suspense and The Black Mass lately, and it's pretty cool to listen to the things that people were entertained by back in the first half of the twentieth century. Be sure to drink your Ovaltine! (Oh, and I got tickets for Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks today! I'm more than just a little excited ^_^.)

Current mood: distraught
I found a paperback copy of Fast Food Nation at Goodwill last night. I haven't read all that much of it yet, but the description of working conditions at slaughterhouses really bothered me. The way that corporations treat their employees, illegal and US citizens alike, is appalling. And what's unfortunate is that they're the best jobs they can get. Just because someone is illiterate or doesn't speak English doesn't give higher-ups license to treat them as less than human. Employees are "encouraged" to stay away from the doctor if they're injured on the job, just to keep the company's safety record clean. And the conditions in which they work are obscenely conducive to injury. Some might say, "If it's that bad, why don't they quit?" But, for the kinds of people that work at such factories, it's often the best they can do. And some employees, raised on their parents' stalwart belief in company loyalty, believe that they should stay at the slaughterhouse until retirement. Unfortunately, for many, their health deteriorates far before retirement age. The injured most often find that the company is less than willing to provide the pension that they deserve. Stockholm syndrome? Maybe. Blind optimism? Clearly.

I got my new flute today. It's solid silver and has a gold-plated lip plate. It has open holes (which I have to adjust to), a B foot, and it sounds absolutely heavenly. I was so happy the first time I took it out when I got home that I cried. I had no idea just how much I missed playing it. It's more than I would ever have asked for. I would have been happy with another one just like my old one...something that costs around $700. Instead, I got one twice as expensive that sounds so much more beautiful. The fact that I have to make sure that I cover the holes on the keys completely has made me aware of another facet of flute playing that I never payed a whole lot of attention to: fingertip placement. I mean, I always knew that you should keep your fingers arched, not laying flat on the keys, but now I have to make sure that I don't ever slack or else the sound will go flat or even become a totally different note. It's kind of like starting from square one in this area. And one I've mastered it, it'll be one less thing that I'll have to worry about. The other thing I've wanted to learn to do is put a vibrato on my sound. I wonder if my teacher would be able to show me how to do it...after all, her teacher taught her how. And, on a non-related note, Dad said that he would take me to see Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks! Actually, he sounded like he thought he'd enjoy it too. Oh, and I got to watch Planet Terror yesterday. It was quite over-the-top and very cool. (Not to mention, Freddy Rodríguez is kinda cute, kinda hot, kinda sexy, hysterically funny, but not funny looking ^_^.) And I'm pretty much super excited about Machete now.

I've been listening to audio readings of Lovecraft from Voices in the Dark lately...if you get bored, you should try listening to some of it late at night. If only they had "The Colour Out Of Space" I would be so happy. Now that's a tale that deserves the read-aloud treatment. I've been thinking lately how bad I want to see SM and the Jicks. They're playing Indy and Cincy two consecutive nights. Could I drag Dad along, maybe? I'm talking to him about it right now. He's like, "Sounds like I'll have to take you. If I take you, I'll have to...think about some stuff." Whatever that means ^_^. (Actually, Southgate House is in Newport.) I so want to go. I hope I get to. Too bad I don't know anyone else who likes The Jicks or Pavement or anything. Buuuut...let's not get carried away, eh? It's not for a few more months. (He won't take me to go see Bob Dylan, but he'll take me to see an unspecified band? I had him listen to some Dylan covers by SM and he liked them a lot, but I didn't tell him that he was the singer/guitarist for the band I wanted to go see.) Enough obsessing. I really want to see Eastern Promises. I was blown away by A History of Violence, but I wanted to see it even before I'd seen that. Okay, showing him some Pavement. We'll see how he likes it ^_^.

Category: Life
I've really appreciated getting to hang out with everyone these past few weeks. I haven't seen many of my friends since they were in high school, and getting together felt like we were all back in school again. And I thought Sweeney Todd was flippin' awesome. Although the word of the night was "ridiculous"...IHOP was ridiculous, the blood was ridiculous, our waitress was ridiculous...it was fun. And I really need to have fun right now. I'm starting to get worried about things again. I haven't heard back from Ivy Tech yet. I'm worried that I won't be going to college again next year, and by then it kind of feels like I might as well not go. I don't want to give up on it. I want to be successful. I submitted my application; what more can I do now? All I can do is wait, I guess. Wait and worry. I hope 2008 is better than I expect it to be. It's gonna be hard to hold a candle to 2007. DC and New York, graduation, going to Georgia and climbing that flippin' mountain, and temporarily feeling hopeful for something. I think I'm going downhill again. I also think that listening to Morrissey 24/7 isn't helping matters ^_^. I want to go to a concert. Nothing looks good, though. It's been too long since my last one. I keep hinting to Dad...Rush...Bob Dylan...! He doesn't think I'm serious. I am. If he would say yes, I'd get on the computer and buy the tickets. I'd pay 50 bucks to see Bob Dylan, easily. Heck, I'd love to go back to the CSO. Inexplicably, I feel like Music Hall is where my roots are. I mean, yeah, Grandpa played there for 39 years (I think it was 39), but I still hold out hope for one day becoming proficient enough to do something like that. Sometimes I think it would be a really cool job to be in an orchestra that does music for films. And sometimes I wonder if I have the potential to become that good, or if I'll hit a ceiling that isn't quite at that level. I caught a glimpse of Grandpa in Mom's expression today, and it almost made me cry. I saw Bo and his mom at CVS today. It was a highlight in an otherwise depressing day. I think I should stop thinking for today.

So, I found a long-lost cord that allows me to hook up anything with the red-and-white audio jacks to the computer. I've gone crazy converting my LPs to mp3. This really, really opens up the spectrum of music I have available, so now I can listen to what used to be a record on the go. I'm super excited about it...we have so many records. And since I've been getting all obsessed about mix CDs lately, this is definitely fuel for the blaze. The only thing I don't like about it is that you have to go at normal speed, so it takes upward of an hour to record an album, plus the extra time it takes to split the tracks up, name them, and tag them in Windows Media Player. Oh well, it's worth it ^_^. This way, I don't have to buy one of those newfangled turntables...just a record player from Goodwill and a cord, also from Goodwill, to hook it up to the computer. This is so sweet! So, Bo, I can make you a copy of Aladdin Sane after all. Granted, it'll be all poppy and scratchy, but you'll have your precious Bowie ^_^. Next, I want to figure out how to transfer movie audio to mp3 file. That might be a tad more complicated, but we'll see ^_^.
