(WWW.HMAS.ORG) Relaypse - Demo Review - 10-21-2003 (Edit)
Posted by: soph @
Relaypse, from Italy, I'd have to class as nu-metal. For a demo, this has got a great production, really nice, clean sound, with audible and discernable instruments. Vocally, Cri ranges from clean singing (Stone Temple Pilots, Disturbed sounding in places) to fairly good shouts, although I feel they lack emotion and range.A strong point of this band is their guitarist, I really like some of his solos, especially on 'Go Away'. The bass is great, and together they both work some good, if basic sounding, nu metal style riffs.'Not King' and 'Lost for the victory' start off powerfully, they get your attention and have some funky rythms to keep you interested. I hear influences of Machine Head and Distrubed for the most part, although you could say the clean vox are reminiscent of Phil Anselmo. I wander if this band is as good live as I think they might be. If they're not signed yet, they should be. Hornsup from Soph.

Singer Cri of Italian band RELAYPSE asked to write a review about their current Promo CD. So I have downloaded these 4 tracks from their digital home and wow! I didn't expect what I got to listen to. There is no bio or history on their website and while looking at their photos it seems these 5 youngsters are still very young. But what they blow around our ears is really impressing!
Four tracks enormously powerful produced and that for a demo CD! It's unbelievable heavy and beamy. In a musical way they range between Nu Metal, Metalcore and a bit Crossover. But they don't sound that much as an American band, though connotations with Godsmack are allowed. They also don't fit in European Aggro Metal drawers.
I Try convinces above all with its alternating singing between clean vocals and growls. Especially the clean singing is outstanding. Cool guitar lines and solos can also be found. Not King starts out with groovy bass lines you can hear out over the entire track. Go Away begins firstly very quiet with acoustic parts and clean singing. But at the end they can't do without bringing heavy guitars and this fu***ing fat sound. Closer Lost For The Victory kicks again ass and you get the full broadside without any squiggles.
Singing could be probably more in the foreground and in general instruments could be produced more differentiated. Besides, there is nothing really to nag about.
RELAYPSE has delivered a great demo. There a big potential and I wouldn't wonder to hear of them soon again. You definitely should check them out! All tracks can be downloaded from their website.
But their official website should be filled with more info material soon!

About a month ago I received an e-mail from Cristiano, the vocalist of Relaypse, asking me to do a review on their demo using their MP3's. No problem ofcourse, so the last couple of weeks I gave the four songs quite some plays in WinAmp.
Relaypse is a versatile band based in Milan, and giving a style description is quite hard, to be honest. Although I'm afraid of the few nu-metal influences that can be heard, the Pantera-influenced band has done quite a good job with this debut demo.
The production is flawless, a good sound (especially for a demo!) that wouldn't misstand a signed band with a full production budget. Although the music isn't complex at all, I like the balance between the two guitars and the way they've been mixed in the sound; the use of stereo sound has been used well. The guitars are heavy, lowtuned and every instrument is audible perfectly. The compositions are simple yet effective, maybe the pace could be picked up to create some more energy.
The vocals by Cri are double sided, since the rawer parts are pretty good, although lacking a bit of aggression. Think Jens Kidman (Meshuggah) meets Phil Anselmo (Pantera). The clean vocals though, aren't my favourite. To my opinion they don't really fit well.
My conclusion if a very positive one. The band sounds solid, has an incredibly good sound and leaves a good impression in overall. My sidenotes concerning the speed, aggression and clean vocals are just minor ones, so if you're into Pantera, head on to Relaypse's website, since all of the four tracks are available for download!

Earlier this year I received an email from a guy called Cri. As it shows out, he is the lead singer of the Italian ensemble Relaypse, and wanted me to do a review of their four-song online demo, so I immediately downloaded the MP3's, but didn't really get to listen to them sufficiently before now. I actually became quite impressed by the quality of the recording, as well as of the bands overall proficiency instantaneously, and through my speakers, the act truly sounds like certified professionals. The song "I Try" is beyond a doubt my favourite out of the four; the rough vocals are simply brilliantly performed, the riffs are well-adjusted, and they even manage to pull a trim little solo out of their sleeves. "Not King" acquires together with "Lost for the Victory" the second place of most appreciated Relaypse compositions, they both retain an amply, worthy of note nerve, which is rightly upheld by the lyrics. The ultimate track has been dubbed "Go Away", and unfortunately it is not my exact cop of tee, it's too slow and it also gives a bit flimsy impression - so as to the melodic vocal
lines: I would prefer them to be left out, the melodies are a bit to similar to the ones of Linkin Park or analogous acts. Otherwise this demo, if truth be told, is to a certain extent splendid!

So, I got this mail from our chief editor telling me about this band from Italy. I am so interested to always listen to bands that come from a country well established on the metal scene, with big names.
Ok, we have a small diamond here. I am really impressed by the composition capabilities of these guys. The production is also amazing and generally go to their website and download their demo. You won't regret it.
Now, to the music. The guys mix up progressive/power tunes and a lot Pantera (the good Pantera though) tunes in the perfect way. Powerful guitars and vocals, although the vocals could be somewhat better. Not that they are not great, but they could have been a little bit better. This change from clean vocals to "Phil Anselmo-like" vocals is a bit sudden. Also, the guitars are not that "stable". The solos need a lot of "fixing" but I am sure this is something that the guys can work on.
All the songs contain some nu-metal elements but don't fear of that. "I try" for example - which is a song that really blew me - manages to put everything in perspective for us. Powerful - to the point of being thrash - riffs and many melodic lines on the vocals combine in the best way all their influences.
The rest of the songs move to the same level - but without catching the same creativity as "I Try" - with the second best being "Go Away" that reminds me of an Angelo Badalamenti soundtrack.
Either way, if you are up to a lot of "progressive-Pantera headbanging", catch them up at their official website. They are worth your 20 minutes... Good work guys, I hope to hear more from you in the future.
