New Mother of Pearl shipment has arrived!
We will be adding our new products to our website in the next few weeks! Gorgeous! Gorgeous! Gorgeous! Beautiful mother of pearl wall hangings, vases and jewelry boxes. We were able to only get a couple of hand carved wood carvings of the Chinese warrior Kuan Kung riding a horse. We are not able to get anymore. Be sure to check it out! For some reason our shipment was in a container that US Customs has decided to hold since February 5th in Los Angeles for examination. It has gone through three exams that we are aware of. We sure would like to know what was in the container that triggered this extensive exam hold by US Customs!
We also got in a beautiful Reclining Buddha carved wood statue. This is a large size and hard to find. We hope you like it as much as we do.
Be sure to check out the decorative hand carved clay Stone Dragon opium pipe. This is a great collector's item! 19.5" Length! Would look great sitting on a fireplace mantle.

Caring for your Stone Sculptures & Carvings
All jade and stone carvings/sculptures are wiped with beeswax or an oil substance to keep it moist before it is wrapped in a paper towel like packaging for shipping. Retail shops in China usually have small glasses of water inside the cases with their jade sculptures.
Stone does dry out and it is important to have a regular care routine for your sculptures. Just like you would have a humidifier in your home for all of your wood cabinets, trim and furniture to keep it from drying out and becoming brittle. I keep a small glass of water in my curio cabinets. Also, at least once a month, I wipe down my jade & stone sculptures with a furniture polish called Liquid Gold or a natural beewax polish. It enhances the colors in the sculpture and keeps it from drying out. If your B, C and D jade or stone sculpture starts to show signs of dry "spots" before the end of the month, you might want to start wiping it with the Liquid Gold or beeswax more often than once a month.
Do not use Liquid Gold on your white jade sculptures! Liquid Gold will turn your white jade yellow. I use a natural Beeswax polish for my white jade pieces. You might want to test a small section with your oil before applying it to see its reaction.

Oriental Furniture
Oriental Furniture is normally used as a blending piece of decor in any room. It really doesn't matter what your decor theme because an oriental design cabinet, table or curio will blend in. I have traditional decor in most rooms in my home, however, when I add an oriental piece, it adds a formal feel. Or, just a touch of elegance in the corner, or, along a wall of the room.
I also have a couple of rooms decorated in an "Asian Safari" theme. Here I blend my African Collectibles with my oriental furniture. These have become my favorite rooms because they are inviting and comfortable to guests in my home. I have a couple of friends who decorate in "Shabby Chic" and they use the Birds & Flowers design as blending pieces. It's amazing to see how comfortable this design fits in that decor theme.
It is a wonderful feeling to continue to admire a piece of furniture that you have had for many years. In my case, I have had a few pieces for over 30 years and they still make me smile when I walk by. I am so glad I invested in myself and my home furnishings when I was young and struggling that I can still enjoy the future heirloom I have today.

Using Crystals in Feng Shui
Crystal is a very powerful energy activator. The energy of the crystal can be amplified by a person's thoughts and feelings. Placing a crystal in the corner of a room will encourage the universal life force to flow through the room freely. If the energy does not flow freely in a room it can affect health, thoughts and abundance of wealth. This is also true in a business or home office.
Green is the color of balance, which is in the center of the rainbow spectrum. A Green colored crystal is generally said to balance our energies, bring stability, increase love and compassion. Being the color of the nature, it brings peace and harmony.
A Blue colored crystal is generally said to increase career opportunities, business, finances, and leadership qualities. It also awakens intuition and eases loneliness.
A Yellow colored crystal is generally said to promote optimism, help you go through changes, aid memory, boost will-power and improve concentration. It also helps you feel expressive and joyful.
A Purple colored crystal has the power to attract and concentrate chi. It can improve the chi of the house/office.
A Pink colored crystal may help people pursue and grasp love. They can improve personal relationships.

Elephants
For thousands of years, the elephant has been a symbol of power, wisdom, virility, fidelity, and longevity. This belief is held not by a single culture, but by at least three the Chinese, Africans, and Indians. The Sacred Elephant is used mostly to promote love and fidelity among couples, but some also use it to bring forth their innate qualities for good governance, namely dignity, intelligence, and prudence.
Been trying for a few years and still haven't had a child? Try placing an elephant figurine in your bedroom and stroking its trunk every night before you sleep. If you're particular about the sex of your unborn, you might want to place a stone on the back of the elephant for a male child.
Elephant sculptures will bring luck and good fortune to any home or office. | ..>

New Products arriving in February! Look for these products arriving in February! Mother of Pearl...Wall Art, Vases, Wood Sculptures, Jewelry Boxes, Photo Albums and more!
The art of inlaid Mother of Pearl is a dying art. To inlay mother of pearl the artist must make an intricate and very time consuming carving of his picture before pouring the mother of pearl. The art has been replaced with the appliqued mother of pearl technique that you will find more common in newer pieces. I purchased my first mother of pearl appliqued piece approximately 30 years ago.
I suggest that when you find an inlaid mother of pearl art piece, you purchase it for your collection. More than likely, it will be an older piece of art and will only continue to increase in value. Or, a very rare newer piece!

CHINESE NEW YEAR
February 7, 2008
Chinese New Year starts with the New Moon on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon 15 days later. The 15th day of the new year is called the Lantern Festival, which is celebrated at night with lantern displays and children carrying lanterns in a parade.
The Chinese calendar is based on a combination of lunar and solar movements. The lunar cycle is about 29.5 days. In order to "catch up" with the solar calendar the Chinese insert an extra month once every few years (seven years out of a 19-yearcycle). This is the same as adding an extra day on leap year. This is why, according to the solar calendar, the Chinese New Year falls on a different date each year.
New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are celebrated as a family affair, a time of reunion and thanksgiving. The celebration was traditionally highlighted with a religious ceremony given in honor of Heaven and Earth, the gods of the household and the family ancestors.
2008 is the Year of the Rat. The Rat year is a year of plenty, bringing opportunity and good prospects. It will be marked by speculation and fluctuations in the prices of commodities and the stock market; the world economy in general will boom. Business will be on the upswing, fortunes can be made and it will be an easy time to accumulate wealth. However, this is also the time to make long-term investment plans as the bonanza the year of the Rat brings will serve to see us through the bleak years that may follow. All ventures begun at this time will be successful if one prepares well. But do not take chances or unnecessary risks: the year of the Rat is still ruled by the cold of winter and the darkness of night. Those who speculate indiscriminately and overextend themselves will come to a sad reckoning.
On the whole, this will be a happier year than most: free from explosive events and wars and with far less catastrophes than, say, the years of the Tiger or the Dragon.
Nonetheless, it will be spicy. It promises a lot of bickering, bargaining and petty arguments that will do little harm. A congenial time that will find most of us socializing and enjoying ourselves.
1924 - 1936 - 1948 - 1960 - 1972 - 1984 - 1996 - 2008 Read more about the Rat...
How will your sign fare during the Year of the Rat?
A prosperous year for the RAT native. He can look forward to a promotion or boost in career. Few small illnesses worry him this year and he can make unexpected achievement and monetary gains.
A smooth and prosperous time for the OX or BUFFALO. Luck will favor his undertakings, and all his previous troubles tend to fade away. He gains recognition in his work and could assume new posts of importance. Celebrations can be expected at home.
Not a very lucky year for the TIGER. Business is difficult and he could find that money is scarce or withheld from him. He will only be rewarded if he exercises prudence and patience. He must avoid impulsive acts and be conservative in his outlook.
A good, calm year for the RABBIT, No surprises, no big problems, but not as fruitful as he wishes either. Progress will be steady as no serious opposition is foreseen in his work or home areas. A time to make plans for the future or buy property.
A lively year ahead for romance and pursuing business interests. Money will flow in but one bad deal could make a dent in the DRAGON's resources. He will find it easy to relax and his overall performance will be good. No big problems confront him at home or at work.
A year of activity for the SNAKE. New outlooks and opportunities present themselves. The Snake will make some advancement in career. This will also be a year for dramatic events, both good and bad. His financial gains will balance out his losses and his problems will be solved by goodwill. A time in which he should neither lend nor borrow money.
A difficult year for the HORSE. Problems and unhappy romantic involvements. He must steer clear of confrontation, especially with the law. Some monetary troubles in the family. A time for the Horse to be cautious and persevering. Should not lend or borrow money.
A very good year for the SHEEP or GOAT. Gifts and gains from unlikely sources such as gambling, lottery, etc. Business opportunities indicated. Home life may be placid but romance and social successes foreseen. No illness or sizable problems.
A lucky and prosperous year for the MONKEY. Money comes rom unlikely sources and it is an excellent time for him to advance his position or ask for loans. Problems are easily solved and he is feted or sought after by important people. New members are added to his family.
A difficult year. The ROOSTER will be forced to dip into savings as money is scarce or find that other people waste his money. Friends won't be of great help or will let him down when he goes to them for assistance. Headaches at home and health discomforts are indicated, as he works hard to settle his troubles alone. A year for discretion and much moderation.
Read more about the Rooster...
A very fortunate year. The DOG can be successful in business or will receive additional income from some investments. His health is good but there will be some problems in his home area or with young children. He should avoid lending money this year.
A year of uncertainties for the BOAR or PIG. Things are unsettled at work and at home and he may lose something he presumed he gained. He will manage to surmount difficulties but worries weigh him down and adversely affect his progress and chances for success.

A blurb about Brenda. She had surgery at MD Anderson Cancer Clinic for another cancer in Houston, TX and is getting stronger everyday. Her biggest complaint is that she wants to do more and just can't. If you know her, you know that there isn't much that can keep her down for very long. The hardest part is keeping up with all the medical bills and travel expenses. We are hoping for a terrific holiday season this year to put all of this behind us and looking forward to starting the new year fresh.
We hope you like our shopping selections for this holiday season. If our inventory continues to grow like it has the past few years, we will have our own shopping mall for your internet shopping convenience.
Thank you for being a loyal The Crabby Nook / River City Market / Art in Retro-Spect customer. We will continue providing you with highend quality products and passing on great deals to you!

Everything you need for your Water Garden or Pond The Egyptians and later the Greeks and Romans enjoyed the beauty of water gardens as a method of enhancing buildings with reflecting ponds containing lilies, iris, papyrus and other water plants. These ponds were also used in their home gardens as areas of meditation. So today the addition of a water garden can give movement to an otherwise static garden while the sight and sound of it can relax and soothe the trouble mind. Moving or still, water immediately becomes the focal point of your garden. It draws the eye with its changing reflections by creating a mirror for flowers, leaves and sky, while at the same time enticing the viewer with the movement of fish and exotic aquatic plants. By combining pond fountains and waterfalls you can easily create a unique water garden. The most difficult part is taking the first step, a step which can be easily overcome with clear pond products at your side. Everything you need for your water garden or pond: • environmentally friendly and seasonal water treatments • pond cleaners • pond kits • pond nets • pond filters • pond repair kits • water fountains • barley straw
Clear and Clean Pond Water An Organic Solution Revisited Since the Middle Ages farmers have known of the benefits of Straw and used it to keep their farm ponds clear and clean. As a result of research reports issued in recent years, pond hobbyists have re-discovered the natural benefits of barley straw for keeping ponds clear. This article will address some of the questions raised regarding the use of barley, how it works, how to apply barley and how much should be used to be effective. While algae is an important source of food and oxygen for life generally, if uncontrolled in a pond environment it can truly be an ugly sight until water plants mature and reduce the amount of light penetrating the water. Algae can also hinder the flow in drainage systems, block pumps, filters, cause odor problems and even create a health hazard. Indeed, emphasis on natural methods of improving water quality is the main reason for searching out safe new ways to control algae. Mechanical methods do not always work well, and using herbicides is contrary to good environmental practice. Recent Reports and Tests British researchers at The Institute for Arable Crops Research, Centre for Aquatic Plant Management (CAPM) in England, recommend applying barley straw to water to control algae. According to the Centre, their method "has been tested in a wide range of situations and in many countries and has proved to be very successful in situations with no known undesirable side effects." Further research suggests that lavender stalks, in combination with barley straw, enhances the effect of the barley straw and is particularly beneficial in ponds with pumps. According to Susan Robins' research article, Washington State University, Master Gardener, "the success of barley straw and lavender has been experienced in local San Juan Island ponds where it has been placed as a test. Research at the San Juan Island ponds has found that lavender in combination with barley can be even more effective in the well-oxygenated water commonly found in ponds with pumped water circulation and/or fountains. Blending barley straw with lavender stalks in various proportions allows one to cover a range of water habitats from still lakes to pumped ponds. How Barley Straw Works As simple as it sounds, there are some basic rules to be followed for the method to work. First, an understanding of how it works is desirable. According to the CAPM, "when barley straw is put into water, its cellular structure starts to break down or decompose. A microbial activity process drives this breakdown or decomposition." It is during this process that chemicals are released which inhibit the growth of algae. The decomposition is temperature dependent, being faster in the warmer waters of summer than in the cold waters of winter. Bacteria begin by breaking down the Lignin, which is the starchy material that makes straw stiff, and other cell wall components of the barley. After about 2 weeks the active microbes change from bacteria dominant to fungi dominant. As this process continues humus develops, (rotting) which is then transformed into a humic acid. The humic acids are referred to as Dissolved Organic Carbon, DOC. DOC is a natural part of many fresh and saltwater ecosystems. As the acid leaches into the water it interacts with sunlight and dissolved oxygen and becomes unstable, decomposing into 2 single oxygen radicals. Thereafter, the oxygen radicals form a super-oxide radical, which then forms hydrogen peroxide in water. The hydrogen peroxide is more stable and long lasting in freshwater. The breaking down process of the barley then forms a continuous supply of the right form of DOC whereby the oxidizing agents can be continuously produced. According to the CAPM, "Concentration of hydrogen peroxide of only 2 ppm peroxide have been demonstrated to inhibit the growth of algae." Some reports determined that barley straw might also act as a clarifier by flocculating fine particles in water. How to Apply Straw The CAPM states that the production of anti algal activity is only produced when the straw is rotting under well-oxygenated conditions and is near the surface of the water to properly mix with sunlight and dissolved oxygen. Straw should be loosely packed to benefit the breakdown process. Bales are too tightly packed and therefore do not allow for sufficient water movement through the straw, which will progressively become anaerobic (without oxygen) and may actually be a hazard. Pellets sink, break down quickly and can become a mess at the pond bottom, thus creating the very problems you want to alleviate. Since the chemicals are only produced near the surface, barley that sinks or is too tightly packed will have no useful effect. Further, according to the Center, anaerobic decomposition can produce chemicals, which actually stimulate the growth of algae because the algae can use them as a source of carbon. The production of hydrogen peroxide from the straw and lavender will continue until the decomposition process is almost complete—a process that generally lasts about four to six months. Hydrogen peroxide in low concentrations such as those produced by the above process has not been associated with any negative effects either on higher plants or on invertebrate animals and fish. Although other straws such as wheat and corn stalks have some algaecidal properties, barley has been found to be much more effective and to last longer, and the addition of lavender was found to enhance its effect. Time to Effect Results Once barley straw has become active, which usually takes between 2 and 6 weeks, the time it takes to become effective varies with the type of algae. According to the CAPM small single cell algae, which turns the water green, usually disappear within 6 to 8 weeks of activity. The larger filamentous algae, known as blanket weeds or string algae can survive for longer periods and may not be controlled adequately in the first season if the straw is added too late in the growing season when algae growth is dense. It is therefore, preferable to add the straw very early in the spring before algal growth starts. Barley Straw should be replaced approximately every four to six months or sooner if the straw fully decomposes before that time. How Much Straw to Use The CAPM found that the most important measurement in calculating the quantity of straw required is the surface area of the water. The volume of water doesn't appear to affect the performance of the straw as might be expected. This is because the majority of algae growth takes place in the surface layers of the water and so it's not necessary to measure the depth of the water or its volume when calculating the quantity of straw needed. In still and small pond waters the dosage of straw should be 50 grams (approximately 2oz.) per square meter of water surface area. Once the algae problem has been reduced, continued additions of straw should be maintained throughout the year. If the straw starts to smell, it should be removed and replaced. It is an indication that there was too much straw for too little water. The re-discovery of this completely organic and non-toxic solution to an ugly problem that affects most pond or lake owners is truly welcome.
New Developments In Pond Filtration (Excerpts from an article by B.W. Channing, Japanese Water Gardens)
The Need for Biological Filtration If we had a horse ranch on 100 acres, while walking on the grounds you would have to watch where you step because you might step into something soft left by a horse. If, however, you placed 100 horses in your backyard, you couldn't step anywhere safely. This condition will also create a serious health problem for the horses and anyone else nearby. In order to alleviate this condition we would need to have a strict policy with regard to cleaning and feeding of the animals.
With regard to Koi keeping the problem is more critical since we as the pond and koi keepers also control the whole environment. Fish essentially breath the very water they swim in, consequently not only do we need a system that takes care of the waste, but we need to convert the harmful chemicals dissolved in the water into relatively harmless ones.
The Method - Biological Filtration: The Nitrite Cycle Biological filters operate on the principal of the Nitrite Cycle and work by the action of good bacteria on the chemicals and harmful bacteria produced by Koi in the natural process of feeding and excreting. These good bacteria are called aerobic bacteria, meaning that they only exist in an oxygen rich environment. There are two different strains of bacteria that consume the harmful chemicals produced by Koi waste and the decay of plants and uneaten food. Once we begin feeding the fish a build up of ammonia will occur as a result of the natural excretion process. We all know ammonia is deadly to fish. As a result of the ammonia build up the pond will become colonized by nitrosomonas bacteria, assuming there is sufficient surface area this bacteria will begin to convert the ammonia into nitrite. While nitrites are not as deadly as ammonia they can also kill in sufficient amounts. Nature is truly marvelous, because at this point, a second bacteria develops called nitrobacter. This bacteria has the ability to consume the nitrite and convert it into nitrates which are relatively harmless and are utilized by plant life. This process is called the "nitrite cycle".
Problems: To a new Koi keeper, the word filter will often give the wrong impression. They believe the purpose of the filter is to remove the dirt and solid matter from ponds. Actually the purpose, as stated before, is to convert harmful chemicals into harmless chemicals. The solid matter is the greatest problem when it comes to effective filtration. If you fill any container with any variety of media, such as sand, stone, plastic, hair rollers, matting, sintered glass, etc. in effect almost any inert product, and then flow water containing a high level of dissolved oxygen over it, bacteria will colonise the surface area of the material. The problem is that unless we take steps to seperate the solid matter from the aerated water, the filter chamber will quickly become blocked or begin to accumulate a large volume of decaying material. This will then require cleaning. As we all know the pure action of cleaning the media will effectively destroy a portion of the bacteria that has cultured or colonized. Now consider that it takes 12 to 16 weeks to pass through the nitrite cycle and up to two years to reach maximum efficiency, it is easy to understand that any disturbance to the biological chambers of a filter is completely counter productive.
Solution: The ideal situation would be if we could create a biological filter that never needs to be disturbed, thereby creating a stable effective means of treating the water. You may ask, is this is possible? It is now! In most larger and newly constructed koi ponds the filter should be fed directly form the bottom drain. The reason for this is that the worst water and the greatest amount of solids are in the bottom of the pond. The water then flows to a chamber designed in such a way as to rotate the water forcing the heavier solids to fall the the bottom of the chamber, thereby making it easy to discharge the waste from the bottom drain. Thereafter, the water moves to a second chamber that will mechanically remove the bulk of the remaining solids then the third chamber will remove the balance, then the water entering the biological chamber is clean and will rum indefinitely with little or no maintenance. This is referred to as "Protective Chamber Filtration". There are many different types of biological filtration, but by developing a simple and efficient design we can reduce the maintenance and increase the efficiency of what is basically the life blood of our pond.
Protective Chamber Filtration: This basically mains protecting the biological chambers from contamination by suspended solids. If we can prevent solid matter from entering the biological chambers we then create a situation where those chambers never require any maintenance, thus ensuring that the bed of bacteria remains at the maximum levels at all times. It is only practical to protect the biological chamber if we down-flow the water through the biological media. In these modern Four Chamber Systems the whole purpose of the first three chambers is to remove the maximum amounts of solids and to oxygenate the water by forcing it to fall and rise in each chamber before it reaches the biological media within the last chamber.
Chamber Number One: Solids falling to the bottom as a result of rotating water. Chamber Number Two: Further solids trapped by the packed chamber of brushes. Chamber Number Three: Finer solids trapped by the large blocks of reticulated foam or Japanese Mat Material. Final Chamber: The media is protected and completely covered by three sheets of reticulated foam.
Conclusion: Protective Chamber Filtration has been used successfully for many years. While regular discharging of the vortex chamber is necessary, the second chamber of brushes only requires cleaning approximately twice a year and the same is true of the third chamber. Also, the reticulated foam in the last chamber may require cleaning twice a year, however the biological portion, (the aqua rock) will remain clean and without build up of solids for years.
The Protective Chamber principal of filtration is simply efficient - efficiently simple.

Your health is connected to the Feng Shui of your environment. Good Feng Shui may not heal all that ails you, but it can help you become as healthy (both physically and mentally) as you can be. Bad Feng Shui can cause, exacerbate, or increase susceptibility to illness, stress, and depressed energy (chi').
Whenever you are making any adjustments, keep your intention in mind. As you move your bed or hang your crystal, tell yourself that you have good health and are feeling great. These positive words embed themselves into the physical changes you make and soon you will find that your intention is your reality.
TEMPLE LIONS / FOO DOGS
Temple Lion statues appeared in China with the coming of Buddhism. They symbolize defense and protection and are often seen guarding entrances and gateways to buildings. The Lion is the symbol of majestic strength, great courage and strength of character.
When a Temple Lion is seen playing with a ball, it is to signify the moon pearl which symbolizes blessings and protection against evil, and the ball also represents the sun, which is Yang. These are the same thing with two different names. Always have a pair. One is bad luck. Place them just inside the front door with their backs to the door or if you get stone ones for outside place them at the door, again with their backs to the door.

Feng Shui Symbol Placements According to BAGUA and Your GUA Number
Now that you have figured your GUA number and you are ready to enhance or activate certain areas according to Feng Shui, I have broken it down to a few enhancement suggestions according to your GUA number. A lot of people do not understand that displaying Feng Shui symbols will assist you in activating positive energies and ward off negative energies when used correctly.
There are several, if not many, interpretations of Feng Shui. That is okay as long as you practice and follow one style of Feng Shui. In America, many consultants advise their practice of Bagua interpretation according to the location of the doorway of a particular room or the main door into your home. I practice by compass interpretation in placing the Bagua only because it is easier for me to understand directions and it seems to work for me better. It also seems to have more substance to the interpretation without a lot of "fluff".. You can still practice by compass one room at a time, or, the entire floor plan. Just make sure you decide whether you are interpreting as a floor plan or by single room.
A good friend of mine, Yvonne Phillips, responded recently to my question about utilizing the Bagua by American standards and how most Feng Shui consultants practice here in the US and I thought her response was appropriate to put into this blog…
"… Here is how you do it:
Walk into any room and stand in the doorway. Facing directly in front of you is North, not compass North, directional North. Then you set up your Feng Shui from that direction. You do not need to know all of the birthdates in order to do it. Check out my website at and go to the consultation page and you will see the layout I use all of the time.
Some easier books to work with are anything by Lin Yun-please read it first and make sure that it feels good and makes sense to you. He has written a lot of books and is one of the Masters. Another lady who takes a very no nonsense approach is Karen Carter, very easy to do your Feng Shui. Please email me if any of this is confusing to you. By the way, all of the schools of FS work, you just have to choose what makes you feel good!…"

MASSAGE THERAPISTS and HOLISTIC HEALERS: A lot of massage therapists or Holistic Healers I know practice Feng Shui in their salons or offices to help grow their business and eliminate negative energies left behind by their clients on a superficial level. If you are a Massage Therapist or Holistic Healer, it is very important that you consider practicing Feng Shui with a little deeper understanding to clear your business of negative energies.
Consider this, when a client comes to your salon or office, they have many negative energies built up in their body. YOU release those energies! Where do those energies go once they have been released? In your Salon or Office of course! These negative energies will eventually wear you down if you don't start re-directing and eliminating them.
Many therapists or healers don't think about themselves and rejuvenating their own energies! Now is the time to think about energizing yourself, letting your business grow and fulfilling those dreams you started your business with. If you are feeling run down, burnt out, creativity blocked, then please consider enhancing the Feng Shui in your Salon or Office. You provide a wonderful service to others and many depend on this service so they can meet the next day head on. What do you do to meet the next day "head on"? Consider how you have practiced Feng Shui, change your symbol enhancement placements, re-new your energy. Let's get serious about growing your business and clearing the way for you to be the dynamo that you were when you started your business.
RETAILERS AND VINTAGE STORE OWNERS: I get many questions from Retailers and Vintage Store owners wanting to know how to clear the path for a successful business using Feng Shui. Especially Vintage Store owners are concerned about the negative energies left behind from the previous owners of the items they are selling. Start placing Feng Shui enhancements to activate positive energies and ridding negative energies will definitely help your business grow.
I can recommend that if you follow the GUA enhancements as I have described, utilize negative energy enhancers, design your shop more Feng Shui with meandering curvy aisles, highlight your Success and Personal Development areas, your business will improve.
GARDENERS: Now is the time for you to open up to your inner self! Women are more than likely making the decision how their patio and gardens are designed. Start acknowledging them and directing your questions and suggestions to them. If they want a meditation or yoga garden, offer suggestions they can relate to!!! You need to be more informed how their gardens can be used for meditation, Feng Shui, calming, spiritual and relaxing. Feng Shui principals can be applied to all of these.
People like to invite others to walk through their gardens, or to sit and relax for a spiritual and calming experience. Be there with your suggestions! Study oriental gardens, their layouts, highlights, etc.. Some people don't want an oriental garden, but, you can offer suggestions that will give the same fulfillment and they don't realize that they are using oriental concepts.

Understanding the Feng Shui BAGUA

The Feng Shui Bagua means "eight trigrams." The BAGUA is a tool of traditional Feng Shui. The Feng Shui tool consists of eight areas around the center that make up the nine categories of life. Every environment can be divided into nine sections with a corresponding symbolic meaning to a specific area of our life.
The Bagua tool is used to determine which areas of your space correspond to the eight energy types of Feng Shui. It is an octagon that can be stretched to fit any room, building, or piece of property. The nine unique sectors are wealth, fame/recognition, marriage/partnership, children/creativity, helpful people/travel, career/ life path, wisdom/ self-cultivation, family and health
The Bagua can help determine:
The most efficient placement of furniture;
How an area with impeded energy flow can be freed; and,
Which area of your space needs improvements depending on which corresponding area of your life you would like to improve. [I.e. By determining which area of your space is the Wealth area, you can then employ any number of Feng Shui symbol "fixes/cures/enhancers" to help encourage your own prosperity.]
Simple, low-cost adjustments to the energy of an environment are made by:
Repositioning furniture and accessories;
Using color;
Shapes or Symbols; and,
Implementing the Five Elements.
In Chinese culture, the important elements are: Fire, Water, Earth, Metal, and Wood. Each of these are represented in a different "Gua" or trigram section of the BaGua, with specific attributes, such as color and direction. By adjusting the elements, many different areas are simultaneously changed and corresponding improvements occur in related areas of our lives. Many solutions or cures are interchangeable to fit personal needs and tastes, as long as Feng Shui elemental balance is maintained.
How do we apply the Bagua over the floorplan?
We need to find the center of the house and determine the north direction with a compass. Best would be to copy the diagram onto a transparent sheet and lay this on top of the floorplan. First determine the center of the house by finding the mechanical center through crossing the 2 diagonals. In case of uneven shapes you need to add missing areas to form the regular shape of a square or rectangle. If the form of the building seems too complex with additions, sunrooms, garages etc. you can find the center by experiment: cut out the shape of the floorplan, glue it on some cardboard and then balance the whole piece on the tip of a pencil. The point of balance will show the energetic center of the structure pretty well.

How to determine the center for the bagua.
Once you have determined the center point, superimpose the center section of the Bagua at this point. The direction of the Bagua is set after the compass north direction on the floorplan. Then draw the octagon over the floorplan and write in the names of each part. The center is called the Taiji, the court in ancient houses or farms, the center of gravity and contemplation.
Print out a BAGUA
The 8 Bagua areas in the sequence of the Luo-shu numbers are:
1. KAN ( water)
Symbolism: Career, Way of Life, also called The Journey Compass direction: North Element: water Colors: black and blue.
The area of water is the beginning of each journey. We ride through life as on a river. If we can manage to go with the flow easily instead of fighting against the current we will experience life with clarity and ease.
2. KUN (earth)
Symbolism: Relationship, Marriage & Partnership, also The Receiptive Compass direction: SW Element: earth Colors: brown and yellow.
This sign consists of 3 Yin lines, the most receptive trigram of all, the strongest feminine sign. Being truly receptive is the final goal of any relationship. Listen to your partner, in private as well as in business, open your heart and receive like the earth.
3. ZHEN (thunder) - pronounced JEN
Symbolism: Family, Elders, Ancestors Compass direction: East Element: wood Color: green
As thunder appears before a storm, the energy of our ancestors comes before us. In ancient Feng Shui the reverance of the ancestors was always very important. To provide the best gravesites to the forefathers would bring blessings and good fortune to the whole family. Thunder also stands for outbursting energy, fast growth and upward movement. The respect for elders as in all old societies is often lost in our modern world.
4. XUN (wind) - pronounced SHUEN
Symbolism: Wealth & Prosperity, Fortunate Blessings, also The Gentle Compass direction: SE Element: wood Color: green
Blessings should be seen as a constant gentle happening pouring down and penetrating like wind. It is represented in the South East as Yin wood energy. This is the area in which statisitically most people are interested in. Beneficial elements to strengthen this area are water and wood.
5. The center called the Taiji (or Tai Chi) unites and grounds.
6. QIAN (heaven) - pronounced CHEEAN
Symbolism: Helpful Friends, also Travel Compass direction: NW Element: metal Colors: silver, gold, white
Heavenly energy manifests in the form of support and love from friends, collegues and neighbors. A strong Quian area in a house decorates the inhabitants. William Spear describes this part of the house as helping to offer our own talents and energy to the outside world, as a possibility of serving others with our own talents.
7. DUI (lake)
Symbolism: Children, Creativity, also Joy Compass direction: West Element: metal Colors: silver, gold, white
Children are usually associated with creativity, imagination and joy. Likewise our artistic, expressive endeavors share the same qualities. Deep strength represented by 2 Yang lines, on top a light Yin line showing the joyful play of the waves on the surface.
8. GEN (mountain)
Symbolism: Contemplation, Inner Knowledge, Wisdom, also The Still Compass direction: NE Element: earth Colors: brown and yellow
Inner knowledge and meditation are the basic qualities of this area. Stillness gives strength. The trigram consists of 2 open lines and a solid line on top as in a picture of a cave, a place where ancient sages would seek contemplation and peace.
9. LI (fire)
Symbolism: Fame & Reputation, also The Light giver Compass direction: South Element: fire Colors: red, purple, pink
Light and illumination are signs of clarity and the picture the world receives from us. Fame and reputation is the way we would like our work to be manifested. Red color in various shades, symbols representing fire and triangular shaped objects enhance this aspect.

If you are new to Feng Shui or you are not sure how to work out your Gua Number then here is a simplified guide. In Feng Shui we all have four auspicious and four inauspicious directions which are based on your Gua number. Your Gua Number is calculated from your date of birth.
WHAT IS A GUA/KUA NUMBER & HOW TO FIND YOUR KUA NUMBER (PERSONAL ELEMENT): Your Gua/Kua Number is derived from the year of your birth - dependent on being either male or female. From it you can ascertain your best directions for sleeping, working and for anywhere else that you may spend a significant amount of time. A complete Feng Shui analysis will use the Gua/Kua numbers of all occupants. The Gua/Kua Number of your home can be determined by the direction that it faces (which is not necessarily the same direction as your front door - especially if your home is in an apartment!) Using the Gua/Kua Number of your home and your personal Kua Number (& that of your partner, if applicable) it is possible to determine the best placement of your bed, your desk, your favorite chair, etc.. With the addition of a geopathic stress analysis of your home - The Geomancer can optimize the chi' that surrounds you - creating a positive environment created just for you!
CALCULATE YOUR GUA/KUA NUMBER To calculate your Gua/Kua number use this simple formula. Take the last two numbers of the year you were born and add them together. Reduce them down to a single digit. For example if you were born in 1958 then you take the 58; 5+8=13; 1+3=4.
MALE - take the single digit and subtract it from 10. Example: 1958 single number of 4; 10-4=6. The Kua number is 6.
FEMALE - take the single digit and add 5. Using the 1958 single number of 4; 4+5=9. The Kua number is 9.
Your Kua will help to determine your type of energy and tell you the directions which are favorable to you. There are two groups of people: those from the East Houses and those from the West Houses. People from the same group are more compatible. It's easier for them to choose a home or the position of their bed, because they have the same good or bad directions.
If your Kua number is 1,3,4 or 9 you belong to the East Houses. If your Kua number is 2,6,7 or 8 you belong to the West Houses.

Baguas and Protective Cannon - A good bagua mirror is in octagonal shape, usually framed in wood and measures about 4 to 6 inches across. It has the eight trigrams marked around the outside with a round mirror in the center. The bagua mirror is easy to use and inexpensive protection method for "shar chi" or poison arrows. The bagua mirror is used massively in "Form School of Feng Shui", which was the first and oldest feng shui school dating back to Song Dynasty (AD960-1279). Form School of Feng Shui which is the basis of all schools of feng shui overides other school of thoughts when certain shapes and formation in an environment is not in a desirable mode. Since most of us live in urban areas, the natural elements of landscape and formation are represented by buildings, roadways and other manmade structures.

I found this article that explains the Bagua Mirror and is easy to understand. I am not going to try to write my own version on its uses. So, I am posting this article here for your study.

Feng Shui and the Ba Gua Mirror by Keith Rudell
Feng shui (Chinese geomancy) has been used for thousands of years by Chinese people to harmonize themselves to their environment and to create good fortune. Basic to all feng shui observation, calculation, and cures is the I Ching, the bible of Chinese philosophy. The I Ching is a system of Yin and Yang, which composes 8 trigrams that, in turn, form 64 hexagrams. The 8 trigrams are created from the interaction of Yin and Yang, hence the ba gua. In Chinese ba means the number 8 and gua means trigram, thus the term ba gua signifies the 8 trigrams.
Feng shui is the observation and adjustment of Qi. The simplest definition of Qi is that it is the interaction of Yin and Yang as primal forces of Qi. All elements, both animate and inanimate, have Qi. The earth, plants, animals, weather - even dead things all have Qi. Qi is both tangible such as electricity, breath, blood, bones, wind, water, plants, rocks, and buildings, and intangible as in ideas, symbols, and spirit. Qi also is connected to the dimension of time.
Qi that is balanced brings health, fulfillment, and the freedom to live one's natural destiny. The opposite of beneficial Qi is Sha. Sha is an enemy Qi that attacks, blocks, and disrupts the balance of a place. Sha is often called a secret arrow because it may be aimed at you without your knowledge. The following are some possible sources of Sha: harsh straight lines, ditches and gullies, neighbors, and evil spirits.
The ba gua are arranged in a circle similar to a Native American Medicine Wheel. There are 40,320 possible combinations of these ba gua in a circle. Only two arrangements are used in feng shui: these are the Pre-Heaven formula (Hsien Tien) and the Post-Heaven formula (also known as the Lo Map) which is the formula that creates the magic square of 15. The Post-Heaven formula arrangement of the ba gua has many uses in feng shui but chief among them are travel, relocation, floor plans, and interior design.
In this article the ba gua will be discussed as it relates to ba gua mirrors. The ba gua mirror is the ultimate feng shui device to create good fortune and to protect against bad energy.
There are three types of ba gua mirrors generally available. The first type of ba gua mirror is made of octagon-shaped plywood or plastic, from 4" to 6" in diameter. In the center of the octagon is a small round 2" mirror. These ba gua mirrors usually have bright colors of green, red, and gold. Green is symbolic of spring, creativity, and vigor. Red is symbolic of summer, illumination, and growth. Gold is symbolic of late summer, productivity, and success.
A second type of ba gua mirror is constructed with a 6" wooden frame holding an octagonal mirror. Covering the mirror is an octagon plate glass. The glass cover is painted on the inside with a Yin/Yang (Tai Chi) design in the middle. The ba gua are painted around the Yin/Yang design in four colors: blue, green, red, and yellow. These mirrors should be used indoors. If placed outside the mirror will accumulate moisture between the cover and mirror causing the paint to run and resulting in a blurred image. This ba gua mirror is especially helpful in harmonizing a room or building.
A third type of ba gua mirror combines the door gods with the ba gua mirror. These usually are made of plywood containing a scene of a fierce god riding a Chinese tiger. The god, usually resembling a Kung Fu master, holds a staff to ward off evil and a plaque declaring good fortune to those residing there. Above the scene is a regular ba gua mirror. These ba gua mirrors are reputed to be especially good at warding off unwanted visitors. Any of these mirrors can be purchased in Oriental markets, gift shops, and some metaphysical bookstores. The price depends on the quality and size, but $2.00 to $7.00 is typical.
Mirrors have a long history in feng shui. As early as 500 B.C. small mirrors were worn on clothing to ward off evil. Mirrors are involved in relationships of all kinds and in China, hand-held mirrors promoted marital happiness. They were buried with the dead and used in magical formulas. Broken mirrors are associated with death and mirrors were covered when someone died in the house. The same mirror could increase beneficial Qi and reflect Sha.
Mirrors are symbols of consciousness, an instrument of self-contemplation. The mirror receives images and absorbs and reproduces them. Mirrors alter space by eliminating the dimension of distance. Mirrors are associated with water and the moon. Round mirrors represent Heaven and create harmony. Mirrors receive the light of the sun and are seen as the door of the soul. Mirrors are visual echoes, connecting past to present and the conscious to the unconscious. Combining a mirror with ba gua gives it the power to create harmony and bring order to chaos. All mirrors work but the higher quality of the mirror, the greater its function as a symbol and tool.
The ba gua are arranged in a ring around the mirror. In the Pre-Heaven formula, the octagon shape geometrically and symbolically is the balance between a circle and a square, between time and physical space. This sequence is the pre-Heaven formula in which ideas are yet to manifest in the physical world. It is before things began. The 8 trigrams concentrate and transform the incoming and outgoing energy. The ba gua functions as a force field around the flow of Qi to and from the mirror.
The ba gua mirror commonly is used for the following purposes:
- To create harmony and good fortune
- To reflect and transform negative Qi
Harmony and Good Fortune
One can harmonize a room or building by placing a ba gua mirror on the wall of a home or office. Ideally they are placed near the center of the room or building, but a side wall is fine. They also may be placed flat on their back and objects placed top to be purified and energized. Frequently they are hung above doors of homes and businesses to harmonize and create good fortune for all who enter. The next time you visit a Chinese restaurant or business, look above the door or perhaps in a window and most likely you will find a ba gua mirror.
Reflect and Transform Negative Qi
As a protective device a ba gua mirror can be hung with the mirror side facing towards the negative source. They can be hung inside or outside a building. The mirror is a weapon against Sha. One mirror may be enough but some homes and businesses use as many as four or five.
Some typical situations that a ba gua mirror may be used to remedy are:
- A cemetery, mortuary or other negative place is located across the street from your home or business.
- The corner of the neighboring building is pointed at your front door.
- The building across the street burned down.
- An electrical transformer box is near your property.
- Your property is being vandalized or trespassed against.
- The walkway to your front door is linear with no fence or curves to intercept negative energy.
- Your desk is at the end of a long hall.
- You must sit with your back to the room entrance.
(Solution: Place the ba gua mirror on the wall you are facing so that the energy of anyone entering is caught by the mirror.)
The support derived from the use of the ba gua mirrors can assist one's positive thinking. According to the principles of feng shui, your thoughts are being transformed into reality with the help of the ba gua mirror. If you place a ba gua mirror in your home or business it will not be long before you will have an interesting experience of how the ba gua mirror influenced a negative situation to become more favorable. Improvements may occur immediately, or days, weeks, or months later.
Keith Rudell began his study of the I Ching over 23 years ago.

The Art of Feng Shui involves the placement of enhancement objects in relationship to our surroundings - in particular our home and business. In Asia, a Feng Shui Master will even be consulted by the Architect n the planning of the relationships of rooms, doorways and windows to themselves and the forces of nature. It is truly believed that the proper, or improper, positioning and association of all these elements will have a dramatic impact on your life. Here we offer the enhancement symbols with their meanings for your own Feng Shui collection.
Despite being an au courant fad, Feng Shui -- pronounced "fung shway" -- is nothing new to the Chinese. In fact, Feng Shui is a millennia-old practice.
The Chinese have long believed that if a home or business had a harmonious and positive flow of chi', which refers to cosmic breath or energy, those living and working there would benefit, thus enjoying health, happiness and prosperity. Palaces, farmhouses, temples and even entire cities were laid according to Feng Shui's precepts.
Feng Shui is a way of living in harmony with nature. Feng Shui is different for each person, just as each person is different from all other people. In a perfect world every person would live in the correct country for him, in the perfect house for her, with the entirety right furniture for all. We do not have that perfect world. The basis of Feng Shui is to find a place where the energy could flow freely with a positive force.
Feng Shui also has a very common sense outlook about getting rid of clutter. If you are not using it, get rid of it. Give it away or put it in the trash. Keep all rooms free of unneeded items. Clean out closets, attics, garages and basements. Let the universal life force flow in and out of the house. What we often cannot do is move walls or doors to help the energy to be positive. There are things that can be done for that door that is on the wrong wall or the window that has a bad view. Some of the things that can help in many cases are a living plant, a mirror, wind chimes or a crystal.
USING CRYSTALS IN FENG SHUI
LOTUS
- The Lotus, called 'Lian Hua' in Chinese is a universal symbol of purity and enlightenment. Regarded as good fortune flower by many Feng Shui masters, the lotus is said to turn bad luck to good luck and heighten your sense of joy and peace. In Chinese custom, the word 'Lian' sounds like successive and if depicted with the image of a baby, it becomes a symbol of good descendant luck. And because lotus leaves protect the fish under them and fish is regarded as abundance, the lotus also symbolizes good fortune secured through generations. One of the revered Eight Immortals, Ho Hsien Ku holds a lotus. She's a symbol of family and marriage luck.
The Lotus rising beautifully from the mud and murky water signifies overcoming obstacles in life suggests bad things can turn good and pure, even in the darkest and gloomiest situations. This inspires one that one can distance oneself from any bad luck and sufferings, eventually rise out of it and bloom elegantly if one has a pure and sincere heart.
The Lotus is also associated with Buddhism. The Buddhist sutras say that the lotus has four virtues: scent, purity, softness and loveliness. Legend has it that before Siddartha Gaotama's or the Buddha's birth, his mother dreamed of a white elephant presenting her with a lotus flower.
