Since his early steps into minimal immaculate & galvanizing ambient, Hiroki Sasajima proved that he had a keen ear for refined sonic details and optimal placement of sound... Along his own explorations and fast self-maturation, he has quickly grown into a skillful dissector, interested in the inner buried properties of sound, its nervures...
Auscultating his environment, listening to its own breath reverberated differently according to the surfaces & materials, he restores sublimated re-read fragments ofreality...
Highly perceptual & organic, his pieces seem to be based perhaps upon in situ manipulation of objects, slight frictions, small bruisings heard through contact mics, to which he juxtaposes an evolving muffled sound motif as spine...

"monogenic" is another fine example of his approach where magnification & introspection combine to become the compost of a deep sensory experience, delivering a sort of intimate story speaking to our Subconscious...
Hiroki captures the invisible distillations, the tremblings, & underlying tones of the locations he visits, gradually filling up a fascinating audio-diary in an entomological way... "monogenic" is a focused closeup breaking the codes of our immediate surroundings...

Hiroki Sasajima - renz
(Q-Tone qt04)
CD
A few months back I was the fortunate recipient of two rather fabulous albums (by Homework and by Terje Paulsen) from new label Q-Tone.  Now they've followed these with a further pair of releases by Sascha Muhr and this one from Sasajima.
Characterised by soft tones and organic field recordings Sasajima has assembled a set of gently immersive soundworlds unified by a deep sense of textural isolationism.   Whilst there is a definite unity between the tracks Sasajima has imbued each with enough individuality to retain both a sense of cohesion and one of progression.
There is a slight insubstantiality to Renz which did bug me a little.  It has a tendency to fade a little too far into the background and as such you do tend to lose chunks of the music when your attention gets diverted elsewhere but on the whole it's a solidly constructed foray into experimental ambience.

When listening to this new work by Sasajima, i was able to hear beauty within a matter of seconds.
‘Quadro’ is a seamless fabric of vibration that creates a mood of wonder and also at the same moment serenity.

when i downloaded this work, i put it on repeat and listened throughout the night. It was most definitely a surreal experience in that i was transcended to a new yet familiar place of wonder and nothingness.
Quadro is one of those pieces that you can just put on repeat have a cup of tea and listen without judgment.

These four tracks are not only interesting in its harmonic anomaly-like character but is accompanied by incredibly wonderful field recordings of very fine fidelity that create a space that is familiar yet mysterious.

When i first heard of Sasajima’s work i was most definitely floored by this artist’s genius and pure innate vision of sound.
Please check out this artist and download this great work at www.mandorla.com.mx

Hiroki Sasajima: Focusing on fine Sounds | tokafi.com

Thanks to Tobias and Nicholas Szczepanik.

For Japanese.

HIROKI SASAJIMA - MONOGENIC (CDR by Sentient Recognition Archive)
ENTIA NON - DISINTER (CDR by Sentient Recognition Archive)
Two new names for me, on the excellent Sentient Recognition Archive label. While Entia Non has a little bit of information, there is no such thing on 'Monogenic' by Hiroki Sasajima. That's a pity, since we have to guess a bit. My best shot is that Sasajima uses field recordings, which are heavily processed into monolithic blocks of sound. His results, three in total, a deeply, what: bass shaking, rumbles of sound. Like the Holloway disc reviewed elsewhere, there is a strong influence of the work of Paul Bradley or Jonathan Coleclough. Deep, dark and mysterious and somehow all generated in the world of digital processing. Rain seems to be the main player in the second piece and motorized sounds in the third, whereas in the first I am completely in the dark. Very fine release for the music, not so much in terms of new things happening.
To spoil the end of the review: it can also be said about Entia Non, also known as James McDougall. Not much information here either, but it says that the field recordings were made at the East Coast of Australia. Here too the field recordings are heavily processed to filter out the deepest, lowest sound, and emphasize those through heavy filtering. The difference with Sasajima however is that its possible to recognize the or;.iginal sounds somewhat. Lots of sea sounds, walking along the beach, the sand in hand approach, motors and boats. Maybe a track too long this one. The best pieces, with the most variety in them - the raw sound versus the treatments - are at the beginning of the disc. 'Nearly Home', the fifth piece, seems a mere repetition of moves that were already made. Again leaning heavily on the UK drone scene - Mirror, Monos, Ora, Coleclough - but executed with the same great care, so perhaps that's fine enough. Two fine discs. (FdW)

"Monogenic" out now on SRA.

Some of the most meditative drones I’ve heard in a long time.
Reminds me of the same mood that Andrew Chalk conjures on
East of the Sun.
This release comes highly recommended and will be a great backdrop for your autumn evenings...
Pro CD-R release limited to 100 copies.

SRA.

Three new SRA releases now available for (pre)order!

RENZ – Hiroki Sasajima (Q-tone)

"Renz" is the sound of nature. "Renz" is the sound of technology.
The apparent contradiction of the previous statements can be solved by the 4 tracks by Hiroki Sasajima: layered sounds mix scattered rhythms, gentle noises and soft melodies that form an organic, truly immersive listening experience.
It's hard to say which are the pure sounds of the environment and what are the "manipulations", the entire disc is permeated by a constant reverb that transforms the tracks into a muffled landscape from which perceive the many precious hidden details that little by little are revealed.
No matter whether this comes from the buzz of a power plant or from the slow flow of a river.
"Renz" is THE sound. "Renz" teaches how to listen.
