Extended Family rocking The Gum Ball

Extended Family would like to thank Matt, Dan and the whole the Johnston Family as well as all who turned up to the Gum Ball Festival on the weekend.
We had an awesome time closing the Gum Ball on Saturday night with one massive set that lasted for almost 2 hrs.
The last 45 minutes of Extended Family's set saw special guest appearances from Dallas Frasca, Mihirangi, Marshall (Marshall and the Fro), Jeff Curran and Joeli from The Fumes along with half of the festival take to the stage, jam out, hold dance offs and party on till the wee hours.

Hope we get to hang out and do it all over again real soon.

The 'Extended Family' are excited to announce the arrival of their brand spanking New Bass Player.

Since August we have been searching the known universe using our specially designed
Bassatronicsexometer looking for the perfect blend of Funkarootsarockativity in bass format. It took a while, but finally we found it in the shape of the wonderfully talented Mr Mark 'The Hulk' Holbert.

We have all been mates for over 10 years and its a privilege to have
'The Hulk'
onboard.

Hulkster will be taking over the low frequency's of the Family sound waves from now on so come down to our next gig and check out some of the new tunes.

'Extended Family' would also like to thank the Caloundra Music Festival for having us up at the Sunshine coast over the weekend of the 18th, 19th Oct.

Yes that's right your favourite little funkster played 2 huge gigs up at beautiful Caloundra as part of their annual music festival.

The Sat night we played along side Dallas Frasca and her gentlemen (Jeff Curren) and had an absolute blinder.

The Sun evening we played between The Whitlam's and Darrel (Dazza) Braithwaite!!!!

To confirm the rumours.....

* yes Dazza played 'the Horses'
* yes the song went for 15+ mins
* yes there was a backscreen with galloping horses
* and yes we were in the VIP section, pissed, with our lighters out singing along to all 30 odd repeats of the chours.

then we partied on after with Dal, Jeff, Dave, Marshal and the Fro crew and a couple of the guys from 'Tripod' as well as all the good people of caloundra.... thankyou for your hospitality and kindness. Great to catch up with some old friend and make some new ones.

A special thanks goes out to the ever-amazing 'Ian Petersie' and the ever-so-solid 'Chris Arnott' on Sax's and Bass respectively who's musical brilliance, professionalism and sense of humour made caloundra such an incredible experience.

We're sad to announce the exodus of one of our beloved members MILICA STEFANOVIC, aka ROXI.

We are going to miss her very much and the extensive use of her pelvic thrusts - as we liked to say, she used more Pelvis than Elvis. Milica was an integral part of the development of the band that is now EXTENDED FAMILY and she worked extremely hard, acting in an assistant manager role and booking role as well as playing bass and songwriting.

Says Alexi:
'Milica is a dear friend whom I love and admire very much. Her exceptional musicality, ferocious work ethic, professional manner in which she does EVERYTHING, graciousness, finely matured performance experience, talent, and friendship will be sorely missed. Milica led the band with consistency, dedication and determination - qualities which I know will bring her great success in her future pursuits. I only wish her the best and am very excited to see and hear her future projects unveiled.'

She will be greatly missed and we wish her all the best on her new journey.

All the best to you from all of us,
we will miss you Roxi.

To keep up with Roxi's new adventures, check out her new myspace, www.myspace.com/milicamusic

Current mood:  blessed
"Life Is Like A Butterfly With No Wings" has been chosen for Homegrown Roots Vol 3 and recently the band was asked about the inspiration for the song by Richard from ABC Lismore.

Here's what the two lead singers had to say ...

Aza:

"Well, for me it is about the struggle the blacks have had in North America with the whites - being used as scapegoats for things they did not do. I think we were trying to tell a story of oppression through someone else's eyes. So for some of them "life may have been like a butterfly with no wings", i.e. fucked "

Alexi says:

"What is compassion? What is empathy? How does one express anger and hurt at another's mistreatment even though one may not have experienced it directly? Perhaps songs are a vehicle for that...

The song: Speaking personally, Az's first few lyric ideas made me think of a dear friend of my family's, who spent years running from the police in South Africa during times of apartheid. It is his story that inspired a lot of the lyrics for me. Always hiding, always running. Apartheid as a formal system is finished now, but there are many people here and all around the world who run from something everyday, simply because of the colour of their skin, their gender, their religion etc, never finding peace, never finding acceptance.

This is what I think of when I sing that song. And perhaps it is because Az wrote the melody in the style of the Mississippi blues, that I also feel the experience of the Afro American person in the deep south of USA really feeds this songs story. That a person's colour, determines whether a man is guilty or not of a crime, or whether a man should live or die, or whether a man can eat as a same restaurant as another, seems exceptionally wrong. It is this sense of injustice that feeds the soul of this tune."
