Current mood:  ninja
We are still writing and plan on recording in the near future.  Right now Nick and Tanner are out on Warped Tour.  Nick with Chiodos and Tanner with Scary Kids Scaring Kids.  Tanner actually filled in for Underoath for a couple dates, check that out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bqWQYJvVGQQ and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pt6UlIxt0-8&feature=related

If you see us out there make sure to say what's up.  A lot of fans and bands have been asking about a new album and it will happen, just be patient and we guarantee it will be well worth the wait.  We also still plan on touring again so once we get everything worked out we'll get back on the road (this includes you Canada!).

Current mood:  horny
Hey everybody,

Nick here. Quick update for you guys that care. Underminded is working on new material right now! I've got some new songs brewing that Tanner and I have been jamming out a bit. Brandon has been working on a remix of "In Complacent Glass Cannons" that kills -- I've never heard anything like it before! So for the record, Underminded has NOT broken up. The last month or two, we've been getting a lot of questions about it. We just needed a break and a chance to pursue other ventures for a bit. We've been doing Underminded for 8 years straight, so we felt we deserved a much needed break - thank you very much.

I've also been watching lots of 'Dexter' episodes - if you haven't seen the TV show before, I highly recommend it. I've also been listening to a lot of good music, like the new Seal covers record and old James Brown records. You should also check out a little local band from here called Misdelphia (www.myspace.com/misdelphia) - it's catchy as hell and you better check them out immediately.

It was an exciting political race this year. Couldn't be more happy right now. To my Republican friends, I still love you even though you don't love me..

In hardcore/metal news, I've seen some cool bands the last 2 weeks. Got to check out Underoath a few weeks ago and that band never ceases to amaze me live. Hot damn! I also had the chance to check out a band called Bring Me The Horizon on Friday night with As I Lay Dying and I must admit, I like BMTH a lot! They have that "I don't give a fuck" personality that just shines through their music -- and they're foreign. I dig it. I saw Shai Hulud on Saturday night -- nothing short of amazing, as well!

A lot of hype around the new Guns N Roses record. It's not bad, it's not great. But I suggest you go listen to the new AC/DC when you get a chance - so legit! New Kanye West is awesome too! I forgot that this blog is supposed to be about an update on Underminded. Sorry. You're going to have to deal with my boring rambling.

I've been busy with some other projects currently. Some I can't talk about quite yet, BUT you will be hearing about very, very shortly. I recently joined the band Cinematic Sunrise. We're working on new material now and I'll be out in Michigan next month with the boys to start banging out songs for the full length. Quite the departure from Underminded, unless you've followed us from the very beginning. Most of you do not know that we started out as a pop punk band. Never woulda guessed, huh? We used to do covers of Saves The Day songs at every show we did. Then we decided to get tattoos and start being tough in our music. Now we make no money and kids get hurt at our shows all the time because of our musical career choices. Wouldn't have changed it for the world..

In any event, this blog might be getting too long for minds to be processing. Just know Underminded is writing new material and our goal is to release a digital EP early next year. No promises, but we'd like to make it happen sooner than later. Some new songs we have are entitled "Fuck Your Band and Fuck You", "Who's Here for The Throat Fuck Party?", & "It's Kinda Like a Colostomy Bag".

Hope everyone has a good Thanksgiving and I'll actually be writing another blog soon with some new developing happenings in the next couple weeks (*Did that sentence make any sense?).

Send a message saying "Hello, who the fuck are you?" to my personal Myspace whenever and check out a little personal blog I keep updated semi-regularly - which means not often enough.

Love,
Nick Martin

It's been awhile since we've announced anything. I guess we've been in hiding for awhile. We're getting lots of emails from people wondering whats going on with us and the future of the band. I'll keep this short and sweet. We're just taking a long needed break. We're not breaking up. We're not doing an "indefinite hiatus". We're just taking a break for now. We have been constantly touring since 2001 and, in all honesty, we're just burnt out right now. There was plans to play the show in Bakerfield w/Scary Kids in a few weeks, but it's not going to happen for us. Our apologies. We will keep everybody informed on future shows and endeavors when they are available.

Brandon currently has a new project in its beginning stages that you can check out. He's collaborating with various musicians on it. Check it: http://www.myspace.com/vigilsmusicsandiego

Like I said, we'll keep you updated on future stuff.

Thanks,
Nick

Hey this is Nick.

I know people put up random posts about anything on here. Usually, I wouldn't do this, but after watching this, I felt a need to show you guys since I know a lot of people consistently visit Myspace.

I saw something on the news today that seriously made my jaw drop. In a short description, a quadriplegic man was dumped out of his wheelchair by a police officer because they didn't believe he was disabled. This video shows the whole story and footage of what happened.

It may not do much, but I expressed my disgust towards their department @ http://www.hcso.tampa.fl.us/

Maybe I'm too worked up over this but for whatever reason this story really upset me. I've grown up doing charity work with people ranging from severe autism to down syndrome to other various disabilities. To see an officer of the law humiliate someone like this makes me sick.

There is no reason for someone to treat a human being like this.

Please spread the word about this and how acts like this should be extremely punishable, no matter who you are.

Thank you,
Nick

Hey, it's Nick. I just wanted to send out a quick bulletin/blog to everyone in hopes that if you are over the age of 18, I strongly encourage that you goto the voting polls this year. I just finished filling out my mail-in ballot and I'm hoping you will do the same, no matter which way you decide to vote.

I don't care what political stance or party you associate yourself with, just make sure you play a part in current history. It's so important in life to really take this seriously and be a deciding factor in what happens in your country. Voting takes less than 5 minutes, but its outcome makes a lifetime of difference.

SO PLEASE DO WHATEVER YOU CAN TO MAKE SURE YOU VOTE THIS YEAR!

Sincerely,
Nick Martin

1. So it's been 3 years since you released your debut album "Hail Unamerican" on Kung Fu Records.. can you talk a little bit about what happened with that whole situation and how you chose to sign with Uprising Records?

Nick: I can't believe its been 3 years. It felt like 3 months really. But we needed the 3 years. We never really stopped touring or writing. It was just a long, drawn out situation with the label stuff. Kung Fu just decided that they didn't want to release new records at all. They wanted to step back from the music industry and we got caught up in that fiasco. But, we still love everyone that worked there and I still talk with a lot of them. Uprising came along with a very genuine attitude that really had no bullshit attached. We're aware its not a huge indie label. We're aware of what they can do and can't do. We've always believed that a label should only work as hard as the band is working. Today, most bands coming up, and even bands that have been around forever still have this mentality of dependency on a label. That a labels responsibility is to do all the work and make you successful. Only you can make yourself successful. And we're on the same page right now and I'm excited to finally show people what we and our music have become.

2. The new album Eleven:Eleven is slated for an August 7th release, talk a little bit about the writing process for this record, was it different than the first album?

Nick: It was completely fucking different this time around. We almost did everything exactly opposite of what we did before. When we did "hail unamerican", our line-up was not steady and our drummer at the time had to learn and write with us a month before going into the studio. He still did an awesome job, but it was definately the wrong process on doing that record. This time around, our current drummer, Tanner, really sat down with everything and has spent ample time on precision with the new material. Some of the songs on the record we're written towards the end of the "hail" sessions, and some of it was written in the 11th hour before we went into studio. So the record is a timeline, somewhat. But we definately channeled something when this was written. I'm not a spiritual person whatsoever, but its the closest damn thing I've come to believing in outside paralells.

3. The first record was very political do you feel like this one follows in the same stance as the first one or is the overall lyrical content more focused elsewhere?

Nick: The lyrics were very intense this time around for me. In all honesty, I almost regret some of the lyrics because they're so private to me. Growing up, I was never much to express my feelings and opinions on anything just because of social reasons. Thinking people would not like me or accept me or think i was odd. As I've grown older, I've progressively accepted being in my own skin. And as I've gotten older, I've just let go a lot, feelings wise. This record is definately political. Not in a sense of anti-Bush, or anti-war, or anti-anything. We live in a world now where you have to be thinking well beyond who is going to serve in office for the next 4 years. You have to see the big picture and what the rest of our lives are dependent upon. It almost goes beyond any political sense whatsoever. It's about really adjusting your life and taking it very seriously if you want this world to be what you want it to be. Depressing as it is, we have a long way to go, and lyrically, that's where I wanted to go. Not depressing, but just real life shit. And like i said before, I kind of regret opening up my private life on this record. Not a bad regret. Just another step of me opening myself up for people to see and maybe relate to on a certain level. Even relationship wise, there's a few songs I go into about. And that's a whole other story or interview that could take hours. Hahaha

4. On the new album you have Enfermeria Part III as the introduction track, Enfermeria Part II was on the first album, when will we see Enfermeria Part I?

Nick: I can't tell you. Sorry, charlie.

5. The first single from the new record is titled "Lords & Wolves" why was this chosen as the single and are there plans for a music video?

Nick: I think this song sums up a lot of shit for me. Its definately a completely different lyrical approach to a song. And once again, a little regretful. It's the only time on any of our records that I express my own person political stance. Some people will agree with, some won't. But in the way that the song was approached a little differently lyrically was I used metaphors throughout the song with contrasts and comparisons between sex and politics. Yes, there are plans for a video. I hope you'll enjoy it.

6. There seems to be a much more melodic approach with less crowd vocals on the new album, was there heavy emphasis on writing a record with more melody?

Nick: There was no emphasis whatsoever on writing a record with melody. And in all honesty, it bugs the shit out of me that a lot of heavier bands have completely "sold out" to that. I understand that hardcore/metal is now yesterdays news to a lot of people. And I understand that a lot of bands think that they can have long, prosperous careers in music if you write a good hook. But to me, I can see through that, as do a lot of other people. That's when a band loses credibility. When their music becomes compromised, and is not art anymore. It's just pure shit. I think our music has always had a little bit of melody. Maybe on this record it shows a bit more. Throughout the writing process with the band, I didn't listen to any heavy music whatsoever. And even to this day, I don't listen to much. I grew up on such a wide variety of music, and i still do. As a musician, you have to be eclectic in music. When bands just listen to their own genre of music they play, thats when shit just starts sounding like everything else. Everything just comes full circle and its boring. We tried to stand out in our genre's with this record. I can listen to a Bob Dylan record one minute, and then pop in an old Stevie Wonder record or an old Clash album. Then get in a room with the band and pull those inpirations from Joe Strummer's way of thinking or the emotions he can express through his words. Or the way Stevie Wonder transitions from a chorus back into a verse. So I think that was more of a record written with integrity and inspiration, rather than melody or heaviness.

7. A lot of people have been talking about your recent blog posts that were featured in a news post on absolutepunk.net.. for those who dont know you, was that all sarcasm? or were you being serious as a lot of people took it.

Nick: I think people have false pretenses of what a heavy band should say or act like. Or even with our political views or expressions, we should be very diplomatic and intense with people. I think over time we've become less serious with ourselves. People have forgotten their senses of humor and some stupid shit I say will just make people want to shit in their pants for no reason. Because I crack some idiotic and immature joke about bands, it becomes a fiasco and random people get their feelings hurt. C'mon now! Of course it's sarcasm. Anyone who has seen us live knows that we are goofballs. We like seeing people gasp or just look completely awkward only because we want people to have fun and be able to laugh at themselves. Anyways, all the shit with the post on absolutepunk.net is resolved with the various parties who were involved. So it's all good.

8. So in recent pictures you are no longer wearing glasses, did you get eye surgery?

Nick: Yeah, I had lasik eye surgery done in December around my birthday. I was just over wearing glasses and having terrible vision. Haha. Some people say that they prefer the glasses, but I'm sorry, fuck you. I can see now.

9. How do you feel towards the recent comments in the media about Rage Against The Machines comments in regards to President Bush and this administration?

Nick: I was at Coachella watching them when it happened. And whether or not if I agree with it doesn't matter. The band was amazing and seeing them for the first time in my life, it was completely life changing. I think the only thing that pissed me off about the whole incident was what Ann Coulter said about them and their fans on Hannity & Colmes a few days after. I highly recommend everyone to go on YouTube and search for the video of her bashing RATM. I was so furious after watching it. I guarantee it will piss you off after watching it. But in any event, I think its amazing what RATM does and it's amazing how they can still control the media. It's good to see them coming back and making their political stance evident.

10. You've experienced some line-up changes since the first record as well, I believe at one point you toured Canada as a 3-piece, then went to a 5-piece.. now a 4 again, are you planning on adding another member?

Nick: We've gone through quite a few line-up changes, but it never really affects us. I mean, I love every single dude that has stepped foot onstage with us. But, we've always moved on unhindered by it. It's always just a new aspect and vibe that adds to what we already do. It's amazing. And yes, there are plans of adding another member and kind of changing up the scenery a bit onstage for us. But I'm not saying shit. Come out on our upcoming tour, and you'll see the change.

11. How do you feel about the current state of the hardcore scene?

Nick: It sucks to say, but it is definately different now. But, the scene in general is always changing and evolving. I've been going to shows for over 10 years now, and its obviously completely fucking different than what it was then. That's just music. People go through fad's and music is one of those fad's. 10 years from now, it's going to be something that no one even expected. And I think that's exciting. Maybe we might not be around then, but it doesn't matter. Music for me has an immense impact on my life. It goes far beyond being in a band. Hopefully, I'll still be a part of it in the future, no matter what it has become. Who knows? Underminded could just become an Atreyu cover band interpreted through classical and mariachi fusion. I'm looking forward to the future, my man.

12. How have the initial reviews from everyone who has heard the new album been?

Nick: They love it. But of course, everyone is going to bullshit with me no matter what. Even though I tell everyone I want honest reviews. My feelings are never hurt by people who don't like it. Obviously not everyone is going to like the music we put out, and I'm fine with that. Just have to hope people that will like it will outweigh the people who dislike it. We'll see what happens. Definately though, the response to our new material has been amazing. People can definately hear the maturity and what we've become, and i think that can be respected somewhat, whether or not if you enjoy the music or not. I think that of a lot of current bands. I love the music they've made in the past, and even though some of their new material isn't up to par with the feelings I have towards their older material, I still respect what they do and I'm still a fan.

13. Do you have a favorite venue or city that you can't wait to play at everytime you pass through on tour?

Nick: That's tough. Over the years, it's all become a big blur. Excessive drinking and countless amounts of drug inhalation just makes 5 years of touring turn into 1 big tour date. The best weed is in Canada. The best beer is in Boston. The best cigarettes are in New York because its like $8 a pack, so nicotine is definately cleaner and better for you there. The best coke comes out of Indiana. We love every city that lets us ingest illegal substances so we can forget about our personal problems and focus on hallucinating until we piss all over ourselves.

14. Does everyone in the band have nicknames?

Nick: Yes. But I'm not going to tell them to you.

15. We're at the drive-thru at Taco Bell, what are you ordering?

Nick: They've got a new 7 layer crunchwrap supreme that isn't bad. The new taquitos they added to the menu are pretty good if you add potatoes inside. The best thing about Taco Bell, and every band knows this, is that you can substitute the shit out of anything on the menu. So even if you're vegetarian, you can have them concoct a crazy meal for you and you'll be full all day. But in the end run, Taco Bell is shit Americanized Mexican food. The BEST mexican food is in San Diego. No question. So when we're home, we never eat Taco Bell.

16. Myspace question: Do you currently have a crush on someone and if so, whom?

Nick: Hahahaha. Myspace question. That's great. I've been in back-to-back relationships since I was like 14 years old. Insane. I've learned so much now from all of that, that now I'm just trying to find "the right one". I'm done with the dating nonsense and all that. I know this sounds like I'm acting way too old and ridiculous, but I'm almost 25 now, and in all honesty, I'd just like to find someone to settle down with and have kids with eventually. I'd like to start a family before I'm 30. But, that's coming up faster and faster everyday. But I guess all of that doesn't answer your question really. Haha. I've always got a crush on someone. Just have to find someone that has a crush on me!

17. You were recently published in Revolution On Canvas 2 due out May 9th, 2007.. how did it come about getting some of your writings into that book?

Nick: I don't really remember how it all came about. We just got contacted one day about submitting some writings to possibly get published in their new book. I sent two writings, which i really regret sending now, but are both being published in the book. They were writings from when we were in Canada a year or 2 ago. But like i said before, the weed is great in Canada. And that's probably how those writings came about. I've grown up since.

18. What bands/artists are you currently loving?

Nick: Oh man. Where do I start? Out of current bands, my CD of the year is definately from Pierce The Veil. I always tell people that their music is not even music, its a piece of fine art. Vic and Mike are just simply amazing musicians and its awesome being able to know them. And actually, they're my 2nd cousins, i think. Pretty weird. We never found that out until a few years ago. Mike was our original drummer in Underminded, and we practiced at their house for years when we started out. We've remained good friends all these years and its so fulfilling to see what they put together on their latest record. Not many other current bands really step out at me as that original right now. But I'm really a fan of music from the past, as corny and cliche as that sounds. I just think its very beneficial being inspired and motivated from music in past era's. The artist I'm always currently loving and listening to is Bob Dylan. Everything about him musically and philosophically is amazing and intriguing to me. I love bands like Queen and Mahavishnu Orchestra that really stretched and defined musical genre's. I love the entertainment and nostalgic presence of Michael Jackson, minus all his fuck-up's in recent times. But umm, I need to think of some current bands. I think The Dear Hunter is amazing. The new Poison The Well has grown on me a lot. I listen to a lot of other shit I'd probably get made fun of for. I like a decent amount of Country music and Mariachi music, even though it's an uncool thing to listen to i guess. I like Michael Buble. I recently watched a documentary on the Dixie Chicks called "Shut Up and Sing" which was really fucking good. Made me respect their music a lot more. I don't know. I should stop now before I get made fun of for the rest of my life.

19. How did it come about getting Marc from Atreyu and Vic from Pierce The Veil to do guest vocals on the new record?

Nick: They've been buddies of ours for a long time. We used to play shows with Marc's previous band before he joined Atreyu. He's probably one of the nicest and most genuine dudes you'll ever meet in your life. But the same thing goes for Vic. He's always been like a brother to me, and he knows that. And having him doing vocals on our record was fucking amazing. Whenever he sings, its immediate goosebumps for me. You can seriously hear and feel the emotion coming out through his body when he sings in person, its unreal. It's like he's walking into a college class as a Professor and shows you how shit is suppose to be done the right way. He has a million idea's running through his head at all times and it was awesome to watch him in action. I want him to be my wedding singer when i get married. Hahaha.

20. On the first song on the album Ya Basta! you scream "enough is enough, now beg for forgiveness, you fuck." And the use of profanity really seems to add emotion and power to the music but is there a such thing as too much? Talk a little bit about your opinion on profanity in music and the Parental Advisory sticker. Will your record contain one?

Nick: Profanity to me is so secondary nowadays. And I guess that's both good and bad. I've never purposely inputted profane lyrics into our music. Its natural. All the lyrics are very pure to me. I just don't really see the shock value in profanity like it used to back in the 80's and 90's with the PMRC really coming down on artists and labels to alert parents that their kids might hear some swear words. Everyone hears swear words now. TV shows like South Park openly use derogatory words like "nigger", along with famous celebrities throwing it around too. I think that's profane. Ann Coulter is on public TV channels like C-SPAN and CNN using the word "faggot" to degrade John Edwards. I think the FCC and other organizations should be more worried with profanity like that. Fuck, priests in organized religions are molesting thousands of children all around the world. There is definately more shit to worry about than a band using bad words in their music. And I don't care if our record contains a sticker or not. Tipper Gore is a fucking idiot, but her husband is a fucking genius. Go figure.

So for the last year or so, I've contemplated the idea of starting a clothing line that was aimed to raise money for various charities. I didn't want to commit to one charity, and I didn't want to put out ordinary looking clothes that are usually coincided with charity-driven clothing lines. My goal is that with every new line thats released, a different charity will be selected for that line.

Just recently while we were on tour with Chiodos, our families were in jeopardy with the San Diego fires. At one point we thought we were going to have to leave the tour and go home due to some of the members of my band having families that were evacuated. Luckily, they were unharmed. But being away from San Diego at that time and not being able to help whatsoever gave me that helpless feeling. I wasn't able to reach out to people and volunteer myself in a time of need.

The first line of The Oh! Paris Company will be donating 20% from every single shirt sold to The San Diego Foundation After-the-Fires Fund (Also, with any re-orders on shirts, I will be raising the percentage). You can visit their website @ www.sdfoundation.org. Even if you choose not to purchase a shirt, I strongly encourage making an outreach to this foundation or any foundation that pursues to the goal of bettering other peoples lives. I know we take everyday life for granted, and I'm guilty as charged. But it really is never to late to lend a helping hand.

I'm already working on the 2nd line which will be completely different from this line. We're not going to limit ourselves to any certain design styles or formats. I want Oh! Paris to be as eclectic in taste as possible and attempt to fit everybody's needs.

Thank you for taking your time to check us out and spread the word!

Much Love,
Nick Martin

P.S. - The name of the company was inspired by my visit to Paris a few years ago. It was the most peaceful and beautiful place I'd ever been in my life. It took my mind off of everything going on in my life and it really put my life in perspective. In the sense that nothing is more important than pursuing true happiness in life with whatever you do. And that's my goal with this company. It's to make the outreach to people that don't have that happiness; that deserve it just as much as we do.

Mosh squad forecasts doom and gloom for Bland Diego

Forget about the lightweights who jump ship from tour after one week with nary a deli tray in sight: Nick Martin is the real deal. He's Tyson, Frazier and Liston rolled into one touring pugilist. "When I hear bands bitch and complain about being on the [Warped] tour, I have no fucking sympathy whatsoever," he grumbles on the horn from said tour. "If you can't handle playing on the biggest summer tour, then just break up your band and do something else."

As the mouthpiece for San Diego-based punk/mosh/metal band Underminded, Martin knows a thing or two about the sneaker company-sponsored summer punk extravaganza. Though currently out with Equal Vision screamo heartthrobs Chiodos ("summer vacation"), Martin is no stranger to Warped touring. Early in their career, Underminded embarked on the tour. As the opening act. On their own dime.

"It was by far the most grueling thing I've ever had to do in my life," Martin admits. Yet, the weeks of waking at 6 a.m., unloading a semi and performing when the marquee names on the bill were still in the sack paid off. Eleven: Eleven introduces broad new spectrums to the band's sound. From wall-shattering guitar-blast breakdowns to soaring, serene moments bathed in production trickery, Underminded reinvent their formerly monochromatic metalcore craft. That doesn't mean they've forgone the mosh: Consult throat-shredding stomper "Lords and Wolves" as evidence.

With Paul Miner (Death by Stereo) behind the board, the band—guitarists Matt Johnson and Richie Ochoa, bassist Brandon Cardwell and drummer Tanner Wayne—ups the ante on their stun guitar assault and takes more melodic turns on such songs as "F.U.L.B.J." and "In Complacent Glass Cannons." Says Martin, "I had never felt so comfortable going into a project, fully confident in knowing the final product would be exactly what we wanted to achieve." He credits Miner for pushing them: "He raised the bar even beyond that."

This time around, Underminded are not as topically political as one might expect (their first record is called Hail Unamerican). It's the more personal nature of many songs that proved controversial to the vocalist. "It wasn't really a conscious decision to be more open lyrically; it was just what came out," he confides. "I didn't realize it until the record was all done. And that really made me nervous and I definitely had a few panic attack-driven nights."

"But I find a weird sense of beauty in that kind of stress in a record," he concludes. "It's not a bullshit record to me. It's something we made that has meaning and substance to it. I can only hope that people will appreciate it for what it is." As for those who don't? "If not, fuck 'em."
