Waking up before dawn (2008)
Apparently Robert Wyatt is rather fond of this Italian outfit who, suitably
enough, have a real aura of 'Canterbury scene' about them – recalling, to
this listeners ears at least, Caravan's If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd
Do It All Over You, with a healthy dose of Tortoise-esque post-rock. Given
that Italy is home to some tremendous prog-rock type outfits (who
understand prog in the noughties is about a good deal more than convoluted
time signatures) this is perhaps not a huge surprise, but what is unexpected is
the almost Nick Drake like beauty of some of the songs on offer here.

Per quanto possano essere diversificati, se si guarda con un minimo di
prospettiva si possono trovare le tracce che accomunano i nostri ascolti nel
corso degli anni. Per gli Eveline (recuperate il loro esordio di qualche anno fa,
un po' acerbo ma con gemme di valore) questo significa le linee di un
rock'n'roll 'conservatore', la sobrietà/austerità anche ostentata della prima
wave e una scrittura squisitamente pop. Parole (anglofone) tendenti a un
certo rustico surrealismo (d.m., l'autore e ugola, viene dalla campagna ed è
inurbato nel paesone bolognese, e si sente) e suoni che potrei definire solo
come (quasi) mai troppi mai pochi: grande sintesi e ricercatezza nel diffuso
pop un po' a la Wyatt un po' anche No(twist). A volte (bt90) sale un po' la
chitarra con un riff quasi Alice in Chains e il tutto si fa 90's con un giubilo
di noi orfani di quell'ultima proficua stagione. E' nei toni soffusi che però
regalano le emozioni meglio sbozzate, con punte di cesello (The Cowboy
Winter Prayer, The Head and the River). Melodie, ritmi arguti anche, a tratti
(in un pezzo, s/t, mi è passato per la mente il Tricky astratto di Nearly God),
grande lavoro sulle voci. L'effetto è quel naturale che trasuda ore e ore di
sbattimento. Lunghe sessioni che probabilmente finiscono poco prima
dell'alba, come recita il battesimo dell'album. Come al solito se ne accorgono
fuori dal nostro grande paese, di queste chicche. Noi pensiamo ad altro,
come sempre. Complimenti (anche al vecchio che troneggia sulla copertina
del promo, eccezionale).

With the majestic 'Happy Birthday, Eveline!' album (Shyrec Italy - 2005)
re-released on Sopot Germany (Oct 2007) Eveline have gone through
something of a re-awakening with the release of their first 'new' album in 3
years.The praise heaped on 'Happy Birthday' by the Italian and German
press inspired the Bolognese band to seek an audience for their 'English'
music in it's own back yard and what an inspired decision by Sonic Vista to
support what is truly one of the most remarkable releases so far this year.
Evoking the 70's Canterbury sound (there was always an element of indie
jazz to Hatfield and The North, National Health, Matching Mole and
Caravan not to mention Robert Wyatt and Soft Machine).
There is still that continental flavour to some of the tracks, 'Why want u' and
's/t' 2 good examples. An eclectic collection of subtle and intricate songs held
together by a vocal sound reminiscent of Bernardo Lanzetti (PFM) and Peter
Gabriel. Eveline have a 'style/image/aura' which conjures up freeform
thinking, experimentation and intelligence. It's a complex blend of post rock,
jazz rock, indie and electronica which has the effect of one of those nice deep
dreams interrupted by fits of lucidity which tend to serve as a re-assuring
confirmation that there are still pleasures ahead.

Si inizia come in un miraggio Zeppelin imbastito da un banditore cibernetico
(Dead Railway Stomp) e si finisce per palpeggiare un frugale vello Mùm
asperso d'incenso byrdsiano (Apples from the electric tree). Nel mezzo
ipotesi folk da Red House Painters spalmati su certe gracili stravisioni O'
Rourke ( The Big M. is tryin'to take us down), imprendibili trialismi Gabriel
con tentazioni Deus (S/T), ninne nanne da carillon sotto un cielo incantato
sparklehorse (The cowboy winter prayer), caligini blues in direzione
portishead (why want u), soffuse trepidazioni tra Canterbury e Radar Bros
(The Head and the River) e soprattutto un bt90 che caracolla ingrugnita
prima di spampanarsi con languore jazzy d'un Vincent Gallo. Gli eveline
escono per l'iniglese sonic vista ma sono un quartetto di bologna attivo dal
2000, già un album alle spalle (happy birthday eveline shyrec 2005 nel quale
l'estro si palesava anche più sbrigliato, ma si sa che l'età porta consiglio e una
certa normalizzazione non significa certo perderci in intensità, anzi. C'è
semmai un leggero senso di accademia, come se questi nove pezzi non
fossero che ipotesi di lavoro. Il che non li renderebbe meno affascinanti,
semmai bisognosi di quel po' di urgenza in più. Comunque, bravi.
