The Chosen Views of BOB ROBERTS
A Solo Exhibition
August 20th - September 30th 2009

For almost 4 decades, American tattooing has had many names come and go. Few names have earned the respect and admiration such as Bob Roberts. As the names and faces have changed, his impact on the art of tattooing has paved the way for every new artist, and has been a point of aspiration for whole generations to come. His work has influenced everything from tattooing, to fashion, music, and everything in between . His monumental career started in 1973 at the world famous Pike in long beach, and over the last 36 years, his definitive style has made him a legend of American tattoo art. The collection will feature over 30 original works, covering more than a 30 year span of his work, including brand new large scale works featuring signature Bob Roberts Imagery.

We are extremely proud to be hosting Bob Roberts' FIRST EVER solo exhibition at Canvas Los Angeles. Though we have shown a few of Bob's pieces before, this will be the largest collection of his work shown since 2003, when Bob Roberts and Ed Hardy participated in a two man exhibit at Track 16 gallery. The opening reception will be held on THURSDAY August 20th, from 8 PM - Midnight, and will serve as the official pre-party for the 1st annual TATTOO HOLLYWOOD convention. CANVAS LOS ANGELES AND GURU TATTOO PRESENT


"COMMITMENT"




Please join us on Friday July 17th, 2009 as Canvas Los Angeles and Guru Tattoo bring you "Commitment", an exhibit inspired by the body suit tattoo. With over 20 pieces on display standing at over 6 feet tall, the show conveys the true potential of the human form as a canvas. The final weekend of "Be Here Now" starts TODAY! The show will be coming down on Sunday July 12th, so now is your chance to get in to see it. Do you wanna miss Fernando Lyons "Til Deth" and "True Lerv" giant flash Pieces? Check these out.

THE SHIGE BOOK

Come out on June 27th for this amazing ONE NIGHT EVENT as we host the only Los Angeles release of the highly anticipated SHIGE book. The latest release from State of Grace Inc, this 328 page hard cover covers the life and work of one of Japan's most influential tattoo artists. The book will be limited to 1000 first edition copies, of which only 350 will be available in the US. Shawn Barber Painting Seminar

"Still Life from Reference and Life"

In this 1 day, 5 Hour Painting Seminar, Shawn will demonstrate and walk you through creating a still life painting from reference and life- going back and forth between the two to see form and structure.

We will be working with a limited palette, photo reference (which will be taken before the seminar from multiple angles)- and painting a still life over a 5 hour period. The first two hours we will focus on drawing, color mixing and laying down a solid foundation. Then we will work back into the paintings and work towards completion.
Shawn will demonstrate process and go back and forth between active assistance and demonstration. This seminar includes discussion and demonstration on palette setup, medium choices, color mixing, constructing a drawing and painting the still life. Within the seminar, we will elaborate on the power of suggestion and 'building up' oil paint to a level of completion over a 5 hour day period.

Gessoed painting panels, Turpenoid, Galkyd, and Galkyd Slow Dry will be provided.
A full outline of necessary supplies to purchase will be provided after a deposit is paid.

This course is recommended for the beginner to intermediate level painter, however some experience in painting is encouraged.

This 5 hour class is limited to 15 people.
