Seomra Spraoi Café Concert: French Pipes & Sarod Wed Oct 14th

Featuring Ciaran Murphy & Thierry Michel

Wednesday 14th October

Suggested donation €5 (more/less as you can afford)

Dinner Served: 7.30pm

Music Served 8.30pm

Ciaran Murphy - Sarod

Ciaran Murphy plays the Sarod, its a 25 stringed lute originating from the Afgan Rebab. The sarod is the most popular and prominent instrument in Hindustani (northern Indian) classical music. The sarod is known for a deep, weighty, introspective sound) with sympathetic strings that give it a resonant, reverberant quality. It is a fretless instrument able to produce the continuous slides between notes known as meend, which are very important to Indian music.

Thierry Michel - Musette Béchonnet, Vegie pipes & Voice

Pipe players are usually called pipers and their fancy fingerwork pipering. Following both the French usage and avant-garde piper Jean Blanchard's definition, Thierry prefers to be called a sonneur ('sounder') and his budding art 'dronering':

"Pipers do not merely play with drones on: we play with the drones. Precisely, we play the drones. Each note produced on the melodic chanter releases a myriad overtones from the choiring drones; a buzzing swarm or wild harmonies. A presence at times disturbing, eerie or beautiful. 'Dronering' in this regard can be seen as much as a way of listening as a way of playing."

This is what he invites you to join in as he sings and 'sounds'  his French pipes or briefly give voice to plants and vegetables that rarely get a hearing: -"someone always cut them before they even get a chance, it seems!" Thierry will play a selection of raw ballads & greens, and rare new tunes from France & the Great Beyond.

The contemporary Euro-American LGBT movement emerged out of the gay and lesbian liberation struggles associated with the radical politics of the 1960s, which in turn were inspired by mass revolutionary movements prominent at the turn of the twentieth century. Yet today the majority of men and women active in LGBT politics seek not revolutionary social change but inclusion within the boundaries of mainstream liberal culture. They tend to organise as a single-issue interest group seeking legislative reforms (for example, amendments to marriage laws), and unlike their forebears pose no radical challenges to either capitalism or the state.

In this workshop, sponsored jointly by Queer Spraoi, RAG, and Seomra Spraoi, we will explore the controversial question of whether contemporary queer politics can and ought to pursue a more ambitious political agenda. If so, what form might such a politics take, and how would it relate to its more conservative cousin?

This is a public and free event, and everyone is welcome!

The workshop will be followed by a queer café and social night.

It hosts workshops, gigs, political meetings, film screenings, a vegan cafe and lots more. The centre seeks to be a hub of positive resistance in a city and society where public spaces have been eaten away by consumerism, property speculation and the culture of the car. QUEER SPRAOI IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE SHED, PRESENT:

Lynnee Breedlove’s One Freak Show

Lynn Breedlove, frontperson of punk dyke band Tribe8, creator of the
novel, short film, and audiobook, Godspeed, brings his One Freak Show to
the Dublin, sharp as a new chainsaw blade, turning the specific universal,

and making gender politics fun at last.
Lynnee Breedlove’s ONE FREAK SHOW is queer, punkrock standup comedy on
bodies and "community." His plan for world peace includes gender nesting
dolls, cross-dressing stuffed animals, and a new edition of Our Bodies

Ourselves for men.
A human body quest for compassion, an irreverent look at the interior
world of The Other, giving out permission slips to laugh at ourselves,
Lynnee Breedlove’s One Freak Show brings activism and laughs through the

usual ridiculous antics, this time including eggbeaters and duct tape.
Knives and body parts are still part of the show.
"The best Tribe 8 show I ever saw was when Lynnee went off on these comic
tangents between songs and cracked me up as much as any great comedian
I've ever seen. Breedlove sings, writes, now brace yourself for a

razor-sharp storyteller. Get in on the ground floor - see this show. A
true renaissance rabble-rouser, the sky's the limit."
Jello Biafra
"Maybe most of this stuff will never make it to the mainstream. That's the
mainstream's loss..." Rachel Howard, SF Chronicle
"Uninhibited humor lends tender insight and perspective to a gender
politics debate that often takes place in a fiercely contentious
atmosphere....." Billy Tania, SF Bay Times
"How absolutely wonderful to go see a gender-bent and bending
border-crossing whip-smart cutting-edge performer—who allows the audience
to become children for a few moments." Terry Baum, SF Bay Times
