Today Planned Parenthood Federation of America President Cecile Richards has written a must read blog on Huffington Post, highlighting that women’s health care is basic health care, and the importance of taking care of women’s health in health care reform. 

She says:

It's as if we are supposed to apologize because we bear children - gee sorry to interfere with the rest of our health care needs, but - there's this tiny issue of wanting healthy, planned families. Our need to use contraception seems to be an annoyance to some legislators - why should we pay for THAT? Rather than seeing family planning as a rather logical solution to preventing unintended pregnancies and providing preventive health care that actually saves the government money, it becomes an all too easy target.

Yesterday reproductive health care provider Dr. George Tiller was murdered in Wichita, Kansas.

Dianne Luby, President/CEO of Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts, today issued the following statement:

"The entire Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts community is mourning the loss of Dr. Tiller. Our thoughts are with Dr. Tiller’s family during this difficult time and we are focused on maintaining the safety and security of our patients, doctors and staff."

ABC News recently posted an article discussing a new documentary by a Canadian filmmaker that reveals the prevalence of oral sex among boys and girls as young as 12.

"In the documentary, 'Oral Sex Is the New Goodnight Kiss,' girls as young as 11 years old talk about having sex, going to sex parties and -- in some extreme situations -- crossing into prostitution by exchanging sexual favors for money, clothes or even homework and then still arriving home in time for dinner with the family."

One girl told 'Good Morning America':

"I think there's very much trading for relationship favors, almost like 'you need to do this [to] stay in this relationship,'"

Today is the National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy.

The U.S. teen birthrate increased for the second year in a row, and we have the highest rates of teen pregnancy among comparable countries.

Did you know that while Massachusetts has the third lowest teen pregnancy rate in the nation, some communities have rates that are more than double the national average? Springfield, Holyoke, and Chicopee have seen a dramatic rise in rates since 2006.

The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy posted  a creative quiz called "Relationship Reality Pop Quiz. "  Take it and choose the answers that are closest to what you would do in each situation…no one's watching, so be honest!

Providing teens and young people with the information they need to make responsible decisions is the commonsense solution to reducing unintended teen pregnancy. Abstinence-only programs are found to be ineffective.

Woo-hoo! We applaud Judge Korman’s decision to lift restrictions on Emergency Contraception, allowing 17-year-olds to obtain the medication without a prescription. Every woman deserves every chance to prevent an unintended pregnancy!
