Ky. roots rock group visits Gramophone Sat.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Louisville quintet Arnett Hollow will bring their mix of traditional bluegrass, rock, jazz and world music to the Gramophone this Saturday. It will be the band's first appearance here.

Guitarist and vocalist Chris Rodahaffer studied several music styles at the Berklee College of Music before coming back to his native Kentucky and pursuing bluegrass and roots music. He said that his band mates attended music school as well.

As for his main traditional influence, Rodahaffer cites Clarence White of the Kentucky Colonels (1954-1965.) As for current artists, Iron and Wine and Radiohead have been in his rotation.

The band is touring on it's 2007 release, "After the Rain." A flood theme wanders in and out of the album's songs – pretty appropriate right about now.

"The record evolved out of the title track," said Rodahaffer. "Kind of dark – it's about a town that gets flooded and washed away. The first seven songs are all related to each other."

Rodahaffer said he was stunned to see how high the water was here while viewing it from an airplane the other day while flying back from Denver's Telluride Bluegrass Festival.

One touring highlight for the band (besides playing the Gramophone, of course) will come July 27 when they precede keynote speaker Robert F. Kennedy Jr. onstage at Louisville's Forecastle Festival.

There is something so enchanting about the sights and sounds of this time of year. A patchwork of colors vibrantly flood the hillside. All has been calm down on the farm as pumpkin picking time has arrived. Young Jimmy and Susie daydream in class about their Halloween costumes and the old dog is still sleeping on the porch. Sometimes the sky grows dark and the wind rolls through the trees and whistles. No one speaks of the storm and things and stuff go on in the hills.
