The Wow Hall is run on your support!
Please become a member of the CCPA and enjoy in the feeling that you are giving back to the community and supporting the arts at the same time.

You will find links to donate here: http://wowhall.org/member.php

Dear Friend of the WOW Hall,

Please take a minute to consider becoming a supporting member of the
Community Center for the Performing Arts, the nonprofit organization that
operates the  WOW Hall.

A 501c3 organization that is owned by the community, the CCPA is
dedicated to providing arts and educational opportunities for all ages and
income levels, preserving an officially designated historic landmark and
helping support local artists and new creative efforts.  Our diverse
programming includes local, regional and international acts (readers of
Eugene Weekly have repeatedly named the WOW Hall Eugene¹s ŒBest Live Music
Venue¹ and ŒBest All-Ages Hangout¹).

Basic operations at the WOW Hall are largely self-funded through ticket
sales, rentals and concessions.  This is possible because of a dedicated
staff, an active board and a large group of volunteers.  The CCPA currently
involves more than 400 volunteers each year.  The volunteer program provides
youth with educational and leadership-building opportunities.  Funds from a
new Lane County Cultural Coalition grant will increase outreach while
building partnerships with local community agencies.

Several major projects have been completed in the past year.  All were
made possible by generous funding from other organizations.  The new Main
Hall heating, ventilation and cooling system and sound attenuation projects
were funded by Metropolitan Affordable Housing, Inc. and the City of Eugene.
The exterior restoration project was funded with a Preserving Oregon grant
from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department State Historic Preservation
Office Heritage Programs and the generous donations of private donors.  The
refurbished cellar was funded by the band Floater and includes a fantastic
rendering of the WOW Hall lotus symbol painted by the band Grynch.

Since our inception in 1975, the CCPA has relied on community support.
Membership not only supports our artist programming and historic
preservation efforts, CCPA members elect and may serve on the Board of
Directors.  Members are kept informed with a monthly newsletter and invited
to celebrate at our annual Membership Party.  We invite you to become
actively involved in your Community Center for the Performing Arts.
Memberships are available on a sliding scale basis (most people join for
between $15 and $45 a year) and all contributions are tax deductible and
qualify the donor to make a matching grant to the Oregon Cultural Trust that
is a state income tax credit.

Thank you for your time.

TONIGHT!!! > : The English Beat with Wetsock

On Wednesday, September 30, the CCPA and KLCC welcome The English Beat back to the WOW Hall along with Eugene's own Wetsock.

Formed in Birmingham, England in 1979, The English Beat have been celebrating their 30th Anniversary touring the USA. Led by founding member, lead vocalist and songwriter Dave Wakeling, their sparkling live show includes the band’s best-known originals including “Mirror in the Bathroom”, “Save It for Later”, “Stand Down Margaret” and “I Confess”, and their inspirational covers of “Tears of a Clown” and “Can't Get Used to Losing You,” as well as the hits Wakeling scored with ‘80s pop icons General Public, such as “Tenderness”, “Never You Done That” and “I'll Take You There”.

The band also has a growing number of new songs that are fast becoming favorites with the fans, like “The Love You Give Lasts Forever”, “How Can You Stand There” and “Said We Would Never Die”. The new tracks are being recorded for release in 2009, either as a series of EPs or a full album that will include new studio tracks, live tracks, acoustic versions and remixes by good friends The Thievery Corporation.

“There are many perks to being in a pop group,” says Wakeling, “the money, the fame, the fast cars, and the sometimes even faster women, they can all be good, but for someone to tell you that your songs have been a part of the soundtrack of their life for a quarter century is the greatest honor a troubadour can ever receive.”

A part of the 2 Tone ska music revolution of the late '70s and early '80s, alongside their stable mates The Specials, Madness and The Selecter, the Beat perfected their own unique brand of the Punky Reggae Party memorialized in the Bob Marley song of the same name. For Wakeling, the English Beat’s hybrid was a delightful blend of Toots and the Maytals, The Velvet Underground, Buzzcocks, The Four Tops and Van Morrison.

The English Beat’s first gig, in March 1979, occurred at the same time as the Three Mile Island nuclear incident in Harrisburg, Penn. Introduced as “the hottest thing since the Pennsylvania Meltdown,” the band has ever since been known for its support of progressive issues and organizations such as Greenpeace, Rock the Earth, CND, Amnesty International, The Smile Train and Heal the Bay.

Wakeling was the executive producer of the Greenpeace benefit album Alternative NRG in '94, which raised funds and awareness for the issue of global warming (he worked full time for Greenpeace in L.A. from 1990-95). Recorded and mixed entirely by solar power, the album contained great live tracks by R.E.M., U2, Annie Lennox, Jesus and Mary Chain and many others, while the mobile solar generator known as “Cyrus” also acted as a traveling exhibition and lecture room about renewable energy, which, notes Dave, “thank heavens looks like is at last becoming a national priority.” With this, and social equality in mind, he also set up the MySpace site Skabama, he explains, “to help our new 2 Tone President make his way into The Black and White House!”

Today’s English Beat features Wakeling on lead vocals and guitar; Wayne Lothian, a former member of General Public’s ‘90s incarnation, on bass and vocals; Antonee First Class, toaster; Rhythmm Epkins, drums and vocals; Nat Love, sax and vocals; Ray Jacildo, keyboards and vocals; and Jai Vatuk, guitar.

Recent reviews and attendance at shows, including a gig at the WOW Hall on March 31, have been nothing short of superb. Veteran fans are saying that they are some of the best English Beat shows they have ever seen, and newcomers are equally enthralled.

Highlights for the English Beat over the years have been touring with The Clash, David Bowie, The Talking Heads, R.E.M., and The Police, playing both US Festivals in '82, and '83, having songs in John Hughes and John Cusack movies Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Grosse Pointe Blank, and, for Wakeling, having his trademark Teardrop guitar placed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, right next to the guitar of one of his heroes, Sterling Morrison of the Velvet Underground.

“At such an exciting time musically, and politically,” says Wakeling, “The English Beat are proud as punch to be spreading their message of connectivity, tolerance and good will. We are all one, and The English Beat would like to see you, one and all, at any of our upcoming shows.”

In a world filled with deceit, hatred, and greed, five heroes have emerged to campaign against the indifference of good men. Wetsock is conjuring up tracks with a unique style dubbed “Ghetto Punk”, blending the finest roots, ska, punk, and blues with their strong political ideals, love of life, and true passion for music. As their musical journey presses on, these men will continue amazing spectators with endless energy and enduring spirit, until death falls upon their heads…

Leading the group is Randaazler McNasty on bass/VOX, joined by Frankie “Face-melting solo” Frankerson on the guitar. Fiercely blowing their horns and dancing their asses off, Denny Bellingham and Eric “Eazy” E. continue to moisten pantaloons worldwide. Rounding out this crew of warriors, on drums, is none other than Mr. Chuck N. Uppetts.

Tickets are $20 in advance, $23 at the door. Doors open at 7:30 pm and showtime is 8:00.

On First Friday, March 6, the Community Center for the Performing Arts will proudly host an Opening Reception for Michael Perkins who will display  Hammered Metal Pieces in the Lobby Art Gallery of the WOW Hall.

    Says Perkins,

“I was born in West Virginia and later moved to Washington, DC as a young adult.  I moved to the West Coast in 1976, living first in Pomona, California where I attended Mt. San Antonio Community College and then in Santa Barbara where I graduated with a BA from UCSB.  I then moved to Santa Cruz where I started my family and business, continued my education and played in a number of musical groups.  We have made our home in the Eugene area for the past three years.

“I have been a visual artist for 30 years, working as a sculptor, wood and slate carver and mixed media artist.  I create artwork using the bottoms of steel barrels (this art form stems from my career as a steel drum instrument craftsman).  I use a hammer and blunt tip punch in order to create this art form.  Images are created from designs in popular culture, logos, icons, trademarks and original designs.  The
steel barrels exhibited are from a large body of work nearing 100 pieces and encompassing over 25 years of expression.”

The Opening Reception runs from 5:00 to 7:00 pm and features entertainment by the steel drum band Apocalypso.  The Lobby Art Gallery is open for viewing during office hours, noon to 6:00 pm M-F.  The WOW Hall is located at the corner of 8th and Lincoln in Eugene.  For more information please call 687-2746.
