PLEASE HELP SAVE THE KNITTING FACTORY!!!! through our individual careers The Knitting Factory has been a source of local music for the all ages circuit!! It is one of the last great music venues in LA...... City inspectors are trying to shut this venue down because they believe it negatively effects the area......
lets think about this.... could this possibly be an attack on the growing sub-culture in Los Angeles??? We are all very aware of gang activity, prostitution and drug peddling in the Los Angeles/Hollwood area..... What is the city doing about it??? What is keeping kids off the streets???

Venues like The Knitting Factory are keeping kids away from the horrors of the Los Angeles street scene, even if for a few hours a day....

If The Knitting Factory is closed where will these kids go???

please read the following letter and do what you can to keep this venue open!!!!

-The L.A.

King Pins

Dear Friends of The Knitting Factory,
I'm writing this letter to garner support for an upcoming public hearing by
the LADBS (Los Angeles Bldg. and Safety) against our venue on Thursday July 17th 2008.

The Los Angeles Building Department is aggressively trying to revoke our CUP
(Conditional Use Permit), for those of you who don't know, a CUP is the
conditions that all Restaurants, bars, clubs etc must run under in order to
keep their doors open, if you lose your CUP, you are essential closed for
business.

After eight years in a crime riddled Hollywood corridor, the LADBS
and vice, states that our venue is a "nuisance" and we do not comply under
"upscale restaurant guidelines" (nonsense, food is always served and
continues service and will someone please define "upscale" for me).

They are
also trying to say we do a steady stream of Erotica here, which is absurd,
as we've only had 3 Adult Entertainment parties over 8 years and 10,000
shows.

Bar owners beware; the city is on a major crack down for what they deem CUP
violations.

Knitting Factory was lured to this location and has served as the anchor
tenant to re vamp this neighborhood.

Suddenly, as the neighborhood has
pushed the drug dealers out, the rents up, built condos and turned our
complex from an Entertainment Center to a retail center, we are no longer
wanted.

When we moved into this location the crime statistics where 3 times
higher than the city average, the corner of Hollywood and Sycamore sat only
1 block North of the 18th street Gang.

In 2004, this corner was used as the
first corner to install cameras as a test to stop crime.

We've endured tremendous hardship from 2004 to 2007 in this complex, whilst
LA Fitness, DSW, Longs and Fresh and Easy were built around us (joy and
thrill to be in a mall) and Galaxy Movie Theatre, Hollywood Ent.

Museum,
Tower Records all went out of business.

We still have "no" visible signage
from Hollywood Boulevard except for a banner hanging at the back of the
plaza.

CIM, the landlord, claims that our cueing is a problem to some of the
retail outlets; of course there wasn't a complaint while the jack hammers
blasted for 3 years and our parking structure shut down for 26 weeks.

Still,
we are jammed to the back of the plaza, with no access to the Sycamore door
(by law) and no where to line up our patrons.

Our Public Hearing is scheduled for Thursday July 17th at 10am @ 200 N.

Spring St, room 1020. Zoning Administration.

I would greatly appreciate
anyone willing to get up on our behalf, just show up and be a part of this
fiasco, or at least send in a letter to me, supporting the need for Knitting
Factory as a live Music venue in the Hollywood corridor.

PS
Please forward to anyone you think might be amendable to our cause

Friendships, Rockabilly and a 'Wonderful Ice Cream Suit'
February 27th, 2008 at 12:13 am by marvin · No Comments

Hello Monks. Rick here again. It's been awhile since I that first article of mine and I wanted to come back and see what other bits of wisdom or life observations I can impart on all of you. I've attempting to write about friendships and how it related to the classic movie, 'The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit'.

I pondered and wrote it many ways, and I wasn't too happy with it. The story is about 4 down on their luck men, who have various goals and dreams and band together to buy a ice cream colored suit. They each don the suit for an hour that night and get into their own adventures and step up in life.

In my pondering, I tried to relate how your circle of friends can make or break you. One group may back you up on decision and motivate you to reach your goals or to support your decisions to push your life forward. Where as others will hold you back and take the 'your wasting your time approach.'

But how do I relate all this stuff in this movie to life? Going through a social climate change and adjustment in the dynamics of my circle of friends, I found that there were many more friends and relationships I had been neglecting and new bonds I am building.

Each group is different and dynamic. Sometimes I am restraint and with others I am care free, and with another group I am very motivated and focused, but still fun.

That last group is a new part of my life. The local rockabilly band, the 'L.A. Kingpins' have taken me as one of their own and doing things with them has lifted my spirits and helping the band has only motivated me to help myself. Now this is a group that is interesting, this is a group that doesn't have to ask me to do anything, I just do it. As if inspired by the growing friendships and the groups unifying goals.

Each person is unique and interesting and unlike some other people I have spent time with, I don't want to punch any of them in the face, or throw them out on a frakkin Airlock. There is something indefinable about this group of friends that lead us all to do what we have to do for the betterment of the Band and for ourselves. This is not a 'Whatever, your wasting your time' group. This is a 'Lets kick some ass' group. They have lots of heart; all of them have become close in a short time.

These are the types of friends that can make a big difference in your life. There is no pressure to do anything you don't want to do. Somehow its inspired by the vibe between each member. Sure there is a fair amount of drama and differences of opinions as there are in every group, but as a whole, it's worked out and smoothed over. There's fears and apprehension, goals and dreams, opinions and differences, but the main goal is common and the bonds that bring them together is friendships. Much like the characters in 'The wonderful Ice Cream Suit'

It's more than, he is a great Base player or she is really awesome on drums, he's a great guitarist or that guy has good ideas. Of course these talents are important, but before that it's the bonds of friendship then what we can do for each other.

It all goes back to my writing teacher Garrick Dowhen told us, it when something like this. That if the person at the top has heart, it will transcend and filter down into everyone involved and lift things to another level.

It's not just that Steve the lead guitarist has heart, it's everyone, from Mel the Drummer to Rich the base player and even to me, your friendly neighborhood Reckless Rick. Every member has lots of heart. It's just that this group of friends just happens to be a band. While another group might be a film production crew. Or maybe your just a bunch of assholes who hangout. What matters is the friendships that bind you together.

I can go on and on, and I am not even sure how coherent all this is. I think the main point of all of this is to choose the people to 'roll' with carefully. Friendships can be the thing that lies between a bad path in life or a fulfilling one.

Hope that made sense Monks.

Rockabilly's Revenge in Long Beach By B. Noel Bar

A chill was blowing through the aged wood doorway of the Blue Café in the old coastal town of Long Beach, California a few days into the New Year. On the stage were The L.A. King Pins. In the back was a beautiful statuesque blond named Mel, in hip hugging pants playing a small rudimentary drum kit. Standing, balanced on his bass, was Rich, a young man in tight jeans and rolled tee shirt, while a stocky looking fellow with a greased up hairdo in a burgundy dinner jacket known as The Kid was on vocals and guitar. These twenty something rockers were playing with almost reckless abandon, music that had been displaced by five generations, was burning and coursing through their veins.

"We got into this by backing an Elvis singer, The Kid explained.

"Mel and I started from there, she was the drummer and I was the guitar player. We were writing these songs and thought we could do this. So, a couple of line up changes and here we are." In response to a question about the size of the scene in Southern California, The Kid said, "It's big. It's never gone anywhere, because it has always been here, but it's growing. It's everywhere you go."

Every other Sunday, the Blue Café is having Church for the rockabilly / psycho-billy brethren. Quarterly they are doing Rockabilly Revenge, an all day all-star event. The New Year's show that was held January 5 featured such Rockabilly luminaries as Lee Rocker of the Stray Cats, Twenty Flight Rock and the Cat House Thumpers. Also represented were Long Beach's own Crown City Bombers. Another Long Beach local Brophy Dale who played on this chilly January night was recently featured in Guitar Player Magazine. The L.A. King Pins from the Valley and The Handsome Devils from San Diego are new kids breathing life into these retooled three-piece rock 'n' roll songs. Their music is brilliant and their playing is dazzling, sold with the conviction of hardened veterans.

Outside of the constant of the fifties look and references to the early rockabilly greats like Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Johnny Burnette this sound has regenerated itself by bringing in fresh players and new attitudes. Since the fifties, this music has repeatedly found new audiences that buy into the honest simplicity, unencumbered with effects and nuances of trendy contemporary styles. This was the musical cornerstone that helped build the temple of all contemporary pop sounds.

The labyrinth of musical styles that trailed into the crossroads of black -blues/jazz- and country-western swing, paved the first main highway called rockabilly. It was Sun Studio's in Memphis, Tennessee, that Sam Phillips put Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis on the map in creating, or at least capitalizing on, the rock in rock 'n' roll. It is the simplicity of this music that still appeals to new audiences everywhere.

The "Singing Brakeman" Jimmie Rodgers may have been the first to actually record a rockabilly record back in the late 1920's with his Blue Yodel songs like, "T for Texas" and "No Hard Times." Later Hank Williams would shake it up with his music, songs like "Honky Tonken" and" Jambalaya."

However, when Phillips had Presley do the Bluegrass song of "Blue moon o'er Kentucky" with that jumping backbeat that was heard in blues records, history was made.

In doing research for this article this writer was amazed to the extent this music permeates the outer fringes of society. It is literally everywhere, from Europe to Asia, from Brooklyn N.Y. to Long Beach, Ca, and everywhere in between. This music, usually associated with car shows, oldies radio, and movies of the fifties, is alive and thriving. The biggest video game out right now...Guitar Hero III...has a song on it called "Psychobilly Freakout" by The Rev Horton Heat.

Yet when I asked fellow journalist April O'Neil of Rock on Request Magazine about what the scene in San Angelo, Texas was like, she said, "If you were to poll random people on the streets as to what their favorite musical genres or sub-genres were, you'd probably make it through the whole town before someone said rockabilly." Yet, San Angelo is the home of the Dead Horse, a live music venue that is one of the hubs in the sprawling state of Texas, for rockabilly and pyschobilly bands like Spector 45 from Dallas Texas, or The Grinding Wheels from Austin, Texas.

But Bryan Kelly, guitar/vocalist in a trio from San Diego, California, The Handsome Devils, has a slightly different take: "It's underground for sure. It is not mainstream. The Stray Cats revived it a bit in the eighties with MTV."

According to the guitar/vocalist Bryan Kelly in a trio from San Diego, California, The Handsome Devils, his take was slightly different, "It's underground for sure. It is not mainstream. The Stray Cats revived it a bit in the eighties with MTV."

The drummer from The Handsome Devils, Frank Winfield elaborated with this thought, "When you grew up you always hear about Elvis or Jerry Lee Lewis. You know it is ingrained into the fabric of America; it is a good music."

Whatever the case is, wherever you are in the world, Rockabilly is here to stay. There is so much going on in this genre of music that mainstream radio is totally missing. Yet the music persists. To quote Chuck Berry, "Hail! hail! Rock 'n' roll! Rock 'n' roll is here to stay!"
