As you may have noticed, IN recently launched a new feature called "Scene in SLC."
We created this feature to highlight those who put Salt Lake City on the map. We're looking for anyone who creates a sense of community, whether as a DJ, a band member, an artist, a clothing designer, a dancer, a photographer, a store owner, a nightclub manager, or anything else that brings people together.
We have plenty of ideas about who makes a scene in Salt Lake, but we can always use more! If you or someone you know would like to be featured as a future "Scene in SLC," please message us here or email us at editor@inthisweek.com with the scene makers' contact information and a brief description of what they do. We'll then take their pictures and send them a few questions to answer.
It's a great way to give someone the recognition they desere, so get those nominations in!

i can't read enough analyses of this show. but that is difficult. most people say 'awesome' or 'sucked' and very little in between.
take, for example, the mid-season premiere. am i the only one to have picked up on a touch of 'politics' as the bloggers like to term it? a couple of times characters talked about how even though we're tired of hearing about it, we still have to work to save the world (of warcraft). something like that. that is a clear reference to the conflict in Iraq, in my mind.
but all in all, a successful episode. i can't get enough of stan's dad. he's my favorite character outside of cartman. and mr hat.

i was going to write an article about this, but screw it. i'd rather just pontificate.
myspace has the worst poetry in the world. real garbage. it's sentimental, whiny and uninspired. i see the appeal in writing it .. it's fun to do something artistic and (usually) cathartic .. and i know you want the world to share it in. but don't do it. it makes the world dumber, and makes you out to be a pansy (regardless of gender).
i've posted poetry before on my personal web blog, and now i regret it more than i do voting for bush. my confidence has been shaken after reading other people's writings. 'am i as lame as they sound?' i wonder.
there is good poetry, but it ain't coming from anywhere in cyberspace. heck, even some U of U grad students write stuff that makes me want to puke. poetry is an art every one can do but only a few people are good at, and an even smaller number excels at. at at at. how do you like my preposition use, Topaz House?
'am i one of the good ones?' you ask. if you have to ask, the answer is no.

i reviewed the dave matthews concert last night at USANA. it was a heck of a show, even though i'm one of the jaded dave fans i mention in the review (available for reading at www.sltrib.com).
this was the 4th time i've seen dave matthews, and the second time i've been privy to couples making out.
the first couple were drunk twenty-somethings. the couple had been chewing each others' faces all night, but when dave played lover lay down, the kissing turned to groping. the chick was hot and busty, so i didn't mind, even though their drunken, sluggish moves were like watching two idiots wrestle more than two humans attempt insemination through levis.
last night's couple, again drunk, were middle aged. blech. the guy's tongue kept hitting her teeth like an organic tooth brush, swabbing and wiping. every now and then he'd pull away to give quotes to the deseret news reviewer. 'put this in your article. every song has a beat.'
good times.

do you ever get the feeling that this world moves too quickly?
movies, if they don't make an outstanding amount of money on opening weekend, are quickly and quietly flushed down the toilet. also, 5 to 10 movies open a week here. sure, most of them suck, but we have too many options. there is not enough time for them all.
tivo has simplified the TV issue - we can now watch Conan O'Brien and not have to jump back and forth between his show and Real Sex 27.
CD reviews. we get advanced copies a week prior to their release dates, usually. readers want reviews the day the CD is available. well, one week isn't really enough to judge an album. music should not been listened to in haste, or in a forced environement.
i could go on, but i'll get to my point.
this is why i enjoy reading biographies. biographies track a person's private and environmental history, allowing for lessons in behavior, choice, past historical events, etc.
i also like reading biographies because i am a snoop, and bios are basically a greenlight to peer into a person's sock drawer.
i've written previously about jenna jameson's autobio - self-serving and contradictory - but what do we expect from a woman whose occupation involves slobbering over another woman's genitals? sorry to be so graphic, but sex just isn't strong enough a word anymore.
i also read 'no man knows my history,' or most of it anyway, that infamous bio of Joseph Smith and the church he founded. if ms. brodie's intentions were not so obvious and angry, the book would have been much better for it. you cannot pretend to academically discredit a person/religion while ne'er taking him/it seriously. i pity any mormon who fell away due to this book's "revelations."
roger lewis' biography of anthony burgess takes a similar stance against its subject. lewis calls burgess 'a great author who never wrote a great book.' the difference between him and brodie is that lewis proves his points with numerous, unbiased sources, and knew the man personally. as he writes, there's nothing more disappointing than becoming friendly with one of your heroes. he is not out to slit burgess' throat and show his blood to onlnookers, but rather explain why this trumped up author was ultimately a failure as a writer, father and husband.
it's interesting, leisurely stuff.

our office's communal restroom has a lighting system that shuts off when no one is in there. while i appreciate technology that saves electricty, it creeps me out walking into a dark restroom.
especially this restroom. it's humid in there, and of course reeks - all the time. it smells like a locker room plus fecal stink. everytime i go in there and it's dark, i think i'm going to find a body slumped over the toilet.
that reminds me of "clerks" when the girl has sex with a dead guy. that was a morbidly funny scene.
and thinking of "clerks" reminds me of "clerks II" and how little those flicks really have in common, and how far kevin smith's star has fallen in my book. of course, some of this has to do with me maturing and no longer looking for a rebellious outlet through dirty jokes.
but also. clerks had something behind it, beside the jokes. it was a kid who was going to spend the rest of his life in a low paying, dead end job, but instead took a risk and made a movie. that's the real story of clerks.
these days, i wish KS would have stopped after chasing amy.
