The Record
After a hectic month of tracking, mixing, mastering,
artwork and planning our new EP, Night Owls is ready for
release September 1st in stores, on iTunes and at live shows.
Working with producer Steven Schram (Little Birdy’s Confetti)
had us changing our thought process about song structure and
performance. Taking on a ‘less is more’ attitude, we tracked most of
the record live at Sing Sing studios adding further instruments only if
we thought they were absolutely necessary to the song.
It wasn’t an easy process. Ryan was bed-ridden with the
flu 24 hours before we were set to hit the studio floor. Corey and
Simon followed suit on day one while Brett seemed suspiciously healthy…
Time was saved, however, when we decided to track She
Said and Thunder Without the Storm entirely live - vocals
and all. It was perhaps She Said that drove us out of our funk
and helped us find our studio legs.
After that it was smoother sailing with the pursuit for
the perfect guitar tone ruling our lives. Some creative drum mic
placement here, a little bass manipulation there and Morning Bird,
Shouting Underwater and Bricks and Mortar
were on their way.
Night Owls features five previously unreleased
tracks for your listening pleasure.
The Tour
It is with great pleasure that we announce our Night
Owls EP Launch Tour for September/October. Having spent the better
part of the last two months making Night Owls a reality we’re
more than ready to get out and play a stack of live shows again.
We’d love to see you and
your smiling faces there!
Ryan xx

If money buys guitars and guitars make me happy then it would be safe
to assume that money can in fact buy me happiness. At least for a while.
Yes, we've all been spending our hard-earned on new guitars, cymbals,
pedals and other gear getting ready to make some cool sounds in the
studio.
In one week we'll be starting pre-production with the producer of our
forthcoming EP, Steven Schram (Little Birdy). Two weeks after that
we'll be in Sing Sing putting down whatever tracks we decide to record
and I'm not gonna lie about it, we're excited.
Working closely with a producer on a record is somewhat new to me. Our
first EP was self-produced and, while that was a fantastic way to do
things, I'm really looking forward to getting another musical mind in
on the action. I think Steve's style will really suit us. This EP will
have blurry edges, strong legs, ruffled feathers and will promote
further wanky language in the blogs to come!
Amongst all of this, my biggest hope is that we come out of the studio
with a record that sounds more like the direction we are headed in now as opposed to Broken Cars and Empty Pockets which feels all too then.
I guess this is how I will always feel about "old" recordings - which
is part of the reason for releasing an EP before the album. It has been
a long time between records for us and I would rather get some new
tunes out there for people's ears as soon as we can rather than wait
even longer for the planning an album requires. Having said that, an
album is not too far off. We're just getting started.
Ryan.
PS. Gear is good.

Current mood: animated
It's almost too quiet. After a month of almost non-stop gigging we've
slowed down for the week to prepare ourselves for a mental night at the
Evelyn on Friday.
It was a good idea to play like maniacs after a month of rest while I
was away. We've got our shit back together now and a few new tunes
under our collective belt so smiles all round!
Monday nights at the Espy came to a close last week. It's always a good night for testing out new ideas. I think I'll miss it.
Finishing a good residency always leaves me feeling incomplete. Kind of
like the ending to The Sound of Music where they escape the Nazis only
to wind up wandering up a barren mountainside without food or
appropriate clothing. Did my VHS run out of tape when I watched it back
in the day, or is that really how the movie ends? That's not a happy
ending.
We're gonna hit the studio soon. Yes, we've been saying it for a long
time but it's no longer on the horizon... more like around the corner.
I'm actually not sure how much I can say so I'll leave it at that. I'm
excited though. We've been ready to record for so long.
Hey, we owe a MASSIVE thank you to everyone for helping us break the
1,000 Facebook fans mark last night. You can redeem your hug at any
future gig or chance meeting.
See you soon,
Ryan.
PS. My bad if you haven't seen The Sound of Music and I just spoiled the ending for you. It's about the journey anyway.

Current mood: chipper
Yeah...
I think since I re-united with the boys a couple of weeks ago we've found
ourselves a new gear. After finishing a tune I'm always excited to hear it
fleshed out with the whole band. Oh how I missed their musical brains while I
was away.
It's been pretty much non-stop for us over the last two weeks with gigs every
second night and trying to rehearse new stuff whenever we can in between. The
rest of the month will be more of the same. To be honest I was dubious heading
into our current schedule mainly because I was afraid I'd get no chance to wipe
off the jet lag and enjoy all the shows. It seems I was wrong. I'm loving it.
I think my writing has evolved. There's nothing like adding a new song to the
set. It never fails to excite everyone in the band and even rejuvenates our
love for some of the older tunes. What's even better is adding more than one new song to the set!
Can't wait for the Evelyn show in a couple of weeks. We've been keeping our
shows a bit discreet in preparation for a massive one down there on June 5th.
It'll be awesome to show you the new tunes. We're gonna be pumped! Yep,
that's bold, underlined and
italic.
Anyway, this is my third attempt to get into a steady routine of posts. Let's
see if it sticks this time.
Keep in touch,
Ryan.
PS. Go to Ireland!

A big thanks and happy hangover to everyone that came out to the East Brunswick Club last night.
While we nurse our sore stomachs and heads we recall fond memories of Ryan's footpath-eating prowess and 2am lock-outs (thanks Melbourne).
Life goes on...

"Um, guys, I've fallen off" - the words we knew we would hear down the phone shortly after Simmo took off on a bike two Friday nights ago.
Upon arriving at the scene, we immediately spotted Sim, sitting on the aptly named 'nature strip', covered in mud and holding his shoulder. Our immediate thought: "Will he ever play the bass again?" Then later: "Is he OK?"
The paramedics arrived and promptly snipped Sim's jumper and favourite fake-boob-thing-on-a-photocopier t-shirt to shreds while asking, "Are you attached to this jumper?" to which Simon replied, "Well, not any more."
All were curious to know the extent of Simon's injuries and so Ryan engaged in a rapid-fire conversation with one of the paramedics...
Ryan: Do you think he'll need to go to hospital? Paramedic: Yeah, we'll have to take him in. Ryan: Has he done his collar-bone? Paramedic: Yeah, he's broken his left clavicle - you can see it. Ryan: How long will it take for him to recover? Paramedic: Why? Does he play footy? Ryan: No, the bass guitar. Paramedic: (no response)
And so, as Simon sped away in the back of a very shiny Ambulance, we were left to wonder...
Had Simon been an active member of a football team, would the recovery time have been different?
Nevertheless, Simon will be in fit fighting shape for the East Brunswick Club June 19th show. His groove: restored.
