Tel. First off thanks for doing this mate would you like to tell everyone in Oi! land who you are and what The Darn Rustlers are all about as so many have asked about you lot?
It's a pleasure mate, thanks for asking us.
The Darn Rustlers are a basically a four piece a`capella oi band, we do covers of various classic Oi/Punk numbers in our own unique style, we also do a few well known sing along tunes to get the crowds going and always encourage audience participation, so if you "erberts" out there ever want get up and join in, feel free to do so!!
We have added a few musician mates to the line up for future things and to help out with an album we are doing, but we will always remain true to our roots unless the money and beer quotas dictate!!
It's a laugh, a piss take and generally chaos!!
Tel. Who are the band members and what teams do they follow (might aswell get that one out of the way) No Claret and Blue eh? Lol
Official band members are Jim, Russ, Gel and Karl and basically anyone else who wants to get up and do a bit when were on stage!!!.
Teams we follow, well coming from south of the river, living in caravans, laying hooky driveways and selling heather at London Bridge you can only guess that one.
The one and only "weak" link is Karl being a Russian blue!!.
With reference to the claret and blue bit, Tel, I didn't know we had a branch of the cockney Villa or Burnley in London mate!!!!!, must be to much tarmac in me earole!!
Tel. Would you call yourself a Millwall band and what do they think of you i/e the Millwall lot?
All of us follow the mighty lions apart from Karl, we wouldn't call ourselves a Millwall band but they do play a big part in our existence as does Pie 'n' Mash, beer, music and of course our mates!!.
We've done a couple of gigs in our local, the Golden Lion on match day evenings and always go down well with the fellas in there young and old, everyone joins in so its always a good laugh and its free beer and PR!!!
We´ve noticed that where ever we play should it be Blackpool, Morecambe, London or Crawley that fans of all football clubs and music styles come to watch us. Seems like The Darn Rustlers have started a new style of music. That`s why we called ourselfs the "The Kings of Oi A´Capella".
Tel. You might have heard about the place we have got lined up over East as a venue.If/When asked would you consider playing over this side?
We would love to if you could guarantee our safety!!!!...... no seriously, we would love to, and good luck to all involved for getting something sorted out for the scene, we hope it happens mate and would defiantly pay a visit - "hands across the ocean" as Bob Hoskins once said!!!!
We played a gig at The Rose and Crown in Crawley last christmas and things started to get out of hand with the pub filling up more than we anticipated. There were about 20 locked out and they tried to get in and as always one thing lead to another and a few small fights kicked off. Thank fully no one really got hurt but it made us think of security for future gigs. Funny enough the owner of the pub was a dedicated West Ham geezer called Trev. It has`nt been the same since he sold it.
Tel. Who is the brains behind The Darn Rustlers?
The brains and idea behind The Darn Rustlers were Jim, Gel and Russ. Karl was added just after the formation to add another dimension and we feel we have a complete unit now and that can really be heard on stage. We don`t really have to rehearse that much as it all falls natually into place when we perform live.
Tel. How did you come up with the idea of what you do which as far as I can remember has never been done before within the field of Oi! Music?
It all started one day at football a couple of years back, Jim ,Gel and Russ where in the Lion having the usual pre match aperitifs when we started talking about the Wasted Festival in Blackpool, the more pissed we got the more silly things became and The Darn Rustlers where born, the rest is history as they say!!
We knew Darren Russell (Wasted, Rebellion, Holidays in the Sun, promoter or what ever it's called now days) and he offered us a slot on the acoustic stage on the Saturday afternoon which we did. We kept meaning to get together to rehearse but it never happened, so we just got up and did it so hence the "Genuine Unrehearsed Classics" tag. We had some help that day from most of The Crack, Arthur Kay and mad Terry Payne from T28 for which we are eternally grateful.
The sound engineers that day recorded the legendry gig at Wasted, Blackpool. We then decided with the help og DogBoy Records to release it on CD. The "Live at Blackpool" Cd featuring Steve from The Crack". The Cd sold out on pre-orders alone. We pressed a 1000 copies and thought we would have trouble selling them but that just hows you how wrong we were. We still have enquires from The US, Australia and around the world about the Cd. Before this court infamous court case emerged (long story) with a couple of silly major record companies we were planning to release another 500 copies on 180g vinyl but this has been put on hold for the time being, but we hope it will see the light of day in the near future.
Tel. Where does the name The Darn Rustlers come from?
We where originally called The Darren Russell's but he got the hump with that and put us on the Blackpool flyers as The Darn Rustlers and that has stuck with us ever since.
Tel. As a band who are your influences music wise?
The Clash (RIP Joe) and later on the 4skins (Hodges era), Last Resort, Cockney Rejects, Infa Riot, and most of the Oi bands around in the early 80s, some of which are still around today and getting on with it.
Truly great times and some truly memorable gigs, happy days!!
Tel. To date, what gigs have you done and, with who. Also what has been the best so far and, why?
We have done more than we can remember now, Blackpool will always stick out because it was the first one and some say the best. We've played with The Crack, Beerzone and the Last Resort in one respect or another to name but a few. We`ve also had guest apperances with Argy Bargy, Code 1 so the list is growing. We get invitations all the time but it depends on where we are and what we`re doing.
Tel. Do you have a regular venue that you play at?
Not really, but the main one would have to be our local the The Lion, they are the only ones that have put up with us more than once and hopefully will continue to do so!!! We`ve also played at The Rose and Crown in Crawley a couple of times as mentioned before and The Concorde in Brighton.
Tel. Out of all the bands that have come and gone and that are still cracking on who would you most like to be on the same bill with and why?
Defiantly the original 4skins, we were gutted when they called it a day and Panther took over, it was never the same, Hodges vocals where the best and to us summed up the whole attitude of the oi scene and a generation at that time.
Were so glad there back, we've heard the track "Glory Days" from the forthcoming kings of street punk album and it's a belter, we also hope the 4skins do the album that is being so hotly talked about.
That a side, the Code 1 vocalist Boycie sounds a lot like Gary H, so they a worth a listen to if you get a chance. (that's a tenner you owe me jase)
And thanks to you Tel for the interview with Mr Hodges it was a blinder
Tel. I had a look at some of the tunes you perform on you're my Space site and saw Billy Don't be A hero by Paper Lace;I liked that tune as a nipper especially as the Rebs got him in the end. What made you want to perform that one?
Its one of Gels and Karls favorites. The Darn Rustlers actually go back as mates for years. They have liked it since they were young that's why we do it, For some reason they have a big thing about the deep south as well, but we wont go into that one!!!
Tel. You also do An Osmond's cover and Bay City Rollers cover, who's idea is that?
All four of us. The idea of these covers was to get people going, we do mainly covers of Oi classics but we thought we would throw in a couple of sing-a-longs for the ladies, it works well, they tend to love all that stuff!!
We did Tiger Feet once by Mud and that really went done well. There were a few punk birds doing the old Tiger Feet dance at the front of the stage, that really made our evening.
At the Wasted Farewell Party in Morecambe last november The Darn Rustlers were headlining the friday. Like The Business a couple of years back, we only managed to do a couple of songs then the power was turned off because it had gone over time. This obviously did`nt stop The Darn Rustlers as we carried on singing without power. We did a set those who stayed behind really enjoyed. We even did a few glam / Oi covers then and as always everyone joined in.
Tel. Do you do any of your own material. If yes who writes it?
We have just finished writing and started recording our debut studio cd, "Pie 'n' Mash and lots of Cash", it should be out by the end of the year. We`ve all had a hand in the writing of the songs, a couple of us have had previous experience in bands and writing songs a few years back, so that helped. As said we have all written stuff for this and there will be no covers on the disc, we have been using various musicians on this record so it will be a more conventional Oi album but with a twist, so watch this space!!!!!
Tel. I also read you have been offered some TV work.Want to tell us about that i/e what it was and what programme etc also, how did you manage to swing that one?
One of the lads who drinks in our local (who shall remain nameless) works at ITV on the production side, he has lined up something on loose women which we will be should be doing in the not to distant future. We've already had some of our merchandise on the set, we don't think people noticed it but it was there!!
The main thing was when we were invited to Denmark by a few mates earlier ths year. We played a gig at "Store Vega" in Copenhagen and the Danish TV Company DR1 did a short documentary on us on a show called Boogie. We`ve only seen a couple of snippets from this but we heard it went down well.
Tel. How do you see the state of play of the whole Oi/Punk scene at the moment and do you think there is room for improvement?
We think it's very healthy at the moment, especially with the new Oi album in the pipeline on G and R records with further releases due from them, and of course the reforming 4skins about to start recording again. Generally there are loads of new and old bands doing their stuff out there which is great for the oi/punk movements future. This is why a band like us totally supports the small record conpanies like DogBoy Records who support us in a big way. We`re all still leaning and the best way to keep learning is to learn from each other.
You just have to go to the festivals to see young and old people/ faces together enjoying the same music to see how vibrant the scene is.
We think/wish there could be more places to play but that's something we all need to get involved in and that's why we wish you the very best of luck in the East London venture mate.
Tel. Ive noticed at gigs loads of older faces showing up from the old days form both sides i/e West ham and Millwall with no friction. How does that make you feel as some one that gets up on stage?
We think this is way it should be, its good to see everyone getting on now in that respect, we've got mates from all teams/areas coming to gigs from all parts of the country and everyone just gets on now.
Many moons ago it was a different story, every gig you went to ended up in a ruck and a lot of people got pissed off with it, venues also stopped putting bands on and that killed the scene in many ways as people couldn't see or bands could not play anymore.
Our proudest moment in this era of peace!! so far is seeing the mighty Micky Geggus sporting a Darn Rustlers badge on stage at the Concrete Jungle festival, now there's progress for you!!!! There`s even people running round with Darn Rustlers T-shirts on and that makes us slightly proud obviously. Long may it last.
We've even got a Millwall division of the East End Badoes even though TH is one of us, and I see we've got a mention else where on this site about those shirts at Blackpool last year!!!!
Tel. Do you have an interest from younger bods that are getting into Oi and Punk?
We were out in America recently for the East Coast Oi Festival, a lot of the young bands there where interested in us and liked our thing (so they said), there was a lot of excellent young up and coming bands, one we would like to mention are Straight Laced!! Keep an eye out for these as they are good, they also played their set in WHU shirts!!!
Generally over here we think the interest here is from youngsters mainly from sons of older lads who are into the scene, so it is quite healthy in that sense, also it stops them getting into all the other shit music that is about and out there at the moment.
Tel. Do you think you can pass a message onto the younger lot as they seem to be leaving all this Rap shite behind them and looking for something new and real. If yes what is that message?
Give the music a go!! We feel the younger generation are finally waking up and looking for true music with true feeling with true people. They are finally starting to turn their backs to all this rap, hip hop and boys band bollocks.
Oi/punk is an acquired taste, once you've got it, it will never go away, taste it and you'll have it for life.
As the old saying goes "it's a way of life" and it always will be and at the moment we are lucky enough to be living it to the full.
Tel. Recording wise have you done anything yet and if yes what is it and, where can it be had. If not when do you plan do record?
As said earlier there is a live CD of the Blackpool gig featuring Steve from The Crack. That`s sold out but as said before there might be a second pressing on 180g vinyl . There's the Harris James EP which we recorded with Beerzone, tracks on this limited edition EP are Two Little Boys and Nellie the Elephant amongst other classics, this EP is still available from our MySpace site, along with badges and t-shirts and of course the latest news. The link is
myspace.com/thedarnrustlers
Both CDs are on the Dogboy Records Label. As said previously we are recording our debut LP to be released later this year.
Tel. Live stuff is something people either like or hate .Do you have any live stuff recorded and again if yes, where can it be had?
We think that ones answered above.
Tel. What are you planes as a band do you have for the future?
To get pissed a lot, go to football and just make a noise!!!
No seriously, we want to do the LP and make a decent job of it and get more gigs under our belt, so any offers out there contact us!
We go out for four crates of beer minimum!!!
We are by no means pop stars and are easily approachable, as everyone who has ever met us now knows.
Tel. Have you played abroad?
As mentioned we did the East Coast Oi Festival in the US this year and Barcelona with The Crack last year and the mentioned Denmark gig, seriously good times and very messy!!!! We were also in Kansas last year visiting a few mates, we played a gig out there and that turned out abit messy as well (Hi Mel & Shorty), but that`s another story for another day.
Tel. I ask this of so many and I know that Top of The Pops isn't going anymore but, if it were would you play on it and why?
Definitely, why not, a lot of other bands have done it, what better way of spreading the message than on national TV. We'd also make sure we got a decent plug in for any interested sponsors (Stone Island are you listening out there!!) To tell you the truth we would of found it hard to do anyway as we don`t mime and no two of our performances are alike, you could see us one night then see us the night after and the two performnances would be like chalk and cheese. It`s all about swings and round-a-bouts and bitter and lager if you get the meaning. We never have a set list as such, we just follow the vibes of the audiance. You could say that in the end it is the audiance that controls us in some ways.
Tel. I also ask this one a lot. Was you at Southall and, what are your opinions of what happened there?
Russ was at Southall and he's never been the same since!!, we think as do many of the people here that the recordings/reporting and the aftermath of the event was a total stitch up and we got shit on from a great height, this forum's section on the subject has it spot on, enough said!!!
Tel. have you put anything forward for the album G and R are doing called heirs To The Throne?
We wanted to put one of our sing-a-longs on to the kings of street punk album but we didn't hear anything back on that one!!
But seriously, we would love to do something for that one if considered mate!!!!
Have a word will ya!!
Tel. How do you think the Forum This is Oi! is doing and what do you think we could do to change it or,make it better?
We think its going great, its about time we had something like this with lads and lassies who are genuine Oi people talking to each other and swopping info and finding out about new bands that we may have never heard of otherwise. Thanks to Milky who posted the bulletin on myspace, otherwise we would have never known about this site!!
I like the youngsters bit as well, its good people taking an interest and to see new bands coming through and keeping the scene going.
Tel. Last question. Is there anything you would like to add; anyone you would like to say piss off to,thanks or just mention.
Thanks to all the "erberts" that have supported us over the last couple of years and apologies' for all the headaches we've caused but it's been worth it!!!
Thanks to Tel for giving us air time and for this site, and all the other bands we have the pleasure of being associated with, you know who you are!!
In the words of the immortal Sir Terry Hayes and the Badoes; "You've just got to keep on fighting that's the way its gotta be"
Be lucky, Keep on Rustling and Keep on Pie "n" Mashing it.
Sir, Jim, Laird Gel, Master Russ and Squire Karl.
