DAVE POMEROY UPDATE - August 13, 2009

Hello there! It's been quite a while since we e-blasted the world with the latest news from Dave Pomeroy and Earwave Music.

First and foremost, on August 1st, I started to move back into my rebuilt house, 7 months after the house fire that pretty much destroyed the place and took the life of my dog, Duke. Many thanks to all of you who have been so supportive during this very intensely emotional time in my life. I am very grateful to have so many friends. We have made some pretty major changes to the upper floor and the improvements are fantastic. The studio will be renamed "Duke's Den" and is now happily home to my longtime engineer and best pal Dave Sinko's studio gear, so the upgrade to the studio is pretty significant on a couple of levels. It feels good to be home again!

My new job as President of the Nashville Musicians Association has kept me incredibly busy, but I am pleased to say that (Local 257 Secretary/Treasurer) Craig Krampf and I are working hard to make a difference and Local 257 is moving into the future! It has been a challenge to lead this organization while literally rebuilding my life, but the dual effort has been more than worth it - we are getting new (and younger) members coming in to join, and some former members are coming back as well. The new website will be launched in a few weeks and will be the real turning point in our efforts to cast the Musicians Union as problem solvers ready to offer meaningful services to members.

Thankfully, making music is still a big part of my life, and I've never enjoyed it more! This Friday, August 14th I am hosting a "Writers In the Round" show at Douglas Corner. My guests are The Sweethearts of the Rodeo, Paco Shipp, and Guthrie Trapp. They are all friends of mine and incredibly talented. I have just finished producing a new CD for the Sweethearts, Kristine Arnold and Janis Oliver. The "Sisters" will be playing some of the new songs and we are all very excited about the project. Paco, who has 2 cds out on Earwave Records, is coming up from North Carolina and will blow your mind with his incredible harmonica playing, great songs and soulful singing. Joining us will be guitarist Guthrie Trapp, who continues to set Nashville on its ear with his hot licks and versatile range of styles. We will have a blast! Hope you will join us...

Three Ring Circle is preparing to finally start out second album very soon in my studio. We just got back from a week at the Rockygrass Festival in Lyons Colorado, where we taught for 4 days and played the opening day of the bluegrass festival. What a treat - an incredible setting for music and a bunch of great folks. I am also on Tommy Emmanuel's new CD as well as Beth Nielsen Chapman's new project.

2009 has already been a year I will never forget, and I have learned many lessons in life and music that I feel sure will stay with me forever. Thanks to all of you for your friendship and love. I feel very fortunate and humbled by your support and wish all of you the best!

Dear Friends, Thanks to all of you for your love and support in a very difficult time. Words cannot say how much you all mean to me. As there are so many questions and a few rumours, I will try to briefly update you on what has happened...

Yesterday, Saturday, January 3, 2009 as I was moving into my office at the Nashville Musicians Union, I got a call from my across the street neighbor saying that my house appeared to be on fire and that he had already called the fire department. I rushed over and 5 minutes later, I was standing in my yard helplessly watching 3 trucks and many firemen trying to extinguish an obviously big blaze inside the house. I knew immediately that my beautiful beloved dog Duke could not have survived the smoke. I will never get over the shock and loss of such an amazing animal and incredible friend, and while I cry at his loss, I will always treasure his memory.

Many wonderful neighbors and friends began showing up and offering help of all kinds. Once we were finally allowed in some time later, The firemen started pulling some basses out of the smoldering basement and handing them to us. The outside brick structure of the house is intact but there is extensive smoke and water damage everywhere inside and a huge charred hole in my living room floor where my couch used to be. It apparently incinerated completely and fell through into the studio and spread the fire downstairs, pretty much destroying the isolation room, which held many of my basses. A couple of my irreplaceable instruments ("The Beast" electric upright and my childhood Gibson EB-2) were miraculously OK due to their position in the house and hard shell cases but many others have been severely damaged or lost altogether. The main studio room is smoke damaged but hopefully structurally OK. Time will tell what gear is fixable.

We have fire department experts coming in the morning to take a second look to try and determine what could have happened before we move anything, and then a cleaning crew working for my insurance company (yes, my insurance appears to be sufficient, at least so far) will prepare for the appraisers to analyze what needs to happen next. I don't yet know the full extent of what I have lost in terms of material things, but I know that the outpouring of love and sympathy I have received from all my friends and family has sustained me through this ordeal and has taught me to appreciate every moment and every emotion.

Once again, thanks to all of you for your concern. I love you all. The offers of help and places to stay are overwhelming and for now I am covered but I am sure I will taking you up on your offers of help soon enough...

Peace, Love and R.I.P. Duke, (He's catching some squirrels now, I'll betcha)

Current mood:  thankful
Sitting at home on Christmas 2008, watching the sun go down in a beautiful sunset, I can't help reflecting on the fact that this has been an extraordinary year in so many ways. I am thankful for all of you that are in my life, and your encouragement, love, and friendship mean more than I could ever put into words.

May we all have a moment of peace today to share with our loved ones and remember to keep those less fortunate than we are in our hearts and prayers. May we also send positive healing thoughts towards those who need our love and support to overcome adversity. Here's hoping that 2009 is a watershed year on our planet and that we can all find ways to reach out to one another and make this world a better place. Why not?

Peace, Love, and Grooves to you all, and to all a good night...

Hey folks. Still kind of a slacker on blogging, but here goes a short one...

The Dave Pomeroy and Friends " The Taproom Tapes" Cd is almost completed and should be out in mid June. It's a collection of live improvisations wit some of Nashville's finest players, including Pat Bergeson, Guthrie Trapp, Mike Durham, Jeff Coffin and much more.

The new Jelly Roll Johnson cd "Songs From the Record World" is out and available at www.jellyrolljohnson.com I played electric upright and string bass on it and it's an excellent record. Jelly Roll is one of the tastiest harmonica players and has played with so many stars I dont know where to begin.

Speaking of amazing harp players, Paco Shipp's new cd on Earwave, "One In A Million" is out and kicks some serious butt if I say so myself. Check it out at www.earwavemusic.com and now on iTunes, too.

While we're on the subject - 10 that's right TEN, Earwave Records are now on iTunes! Check em out when you get a chance. 2 solo Cds by Dave Pomeroy, 2 Paco Shipp records, Nashville Unlimited Christmas, Blue Christmas, Lorianna Matera's "Nobody's Angel", Supercool's Greatest HIts, Vol. 1, the Jamie Hartford Band, Tone Patrol - Thin Air, and more!

see ya next time!

I will make a vow that once a year is just not enough to justify having a blog - so here we go again. I’ll try to do better. Stay Tuned...

Hey there everyone and anyone! Hope this finds you well. This is a new thing for me, so i will start small. As a freelance musician, I get to work with a lot of great singers, songwriters, and musicians. I will be keeping a journal of sorts of some of the more unusual and interesting musical adventures I get myself into, as well as the occasional non musical foray into other areas of interest to me. Also, feel free to post some questions regarding bass playing, studio stuff, etc. and I'll get to them when I can.
