Extraordinary band ... Noite Brasil led by guitarist Oscar Castro-Neves. Reviewed by John Shand January 15, 2007 Noite Brasil, The Domain, January 13
THIS WAS EASILY THE BEST EVER JAZZ IN THE DOMAIN.
Last year the festival changed the nature of the event by taking it seriously, giving it a theme (New Orleans), and peopling it with international stars. This year we were off to Brazil on the wings of an extraordinary multi-national band led by Oscar Castro-Neves, one of the most influential musicians of the bossa nova movement.
He and Airto Moreira, who helped to define the percussionist's role in contemporary music (with Miles Davis, Weather Report and Chick Corea), were the only participants mentioned in the advertising.
The best kept secret of the Sydney Festival was that here was one the greatest rhythm sections to ever visit Australia: bassist Abraham Laboriel and drummer Alex Acuna. Had this been widely promoted, every switched-on bass player and drummer in town would have been hanging off every note. Instead they will be kicking themselves when they hear what they missed.
The first half was largely a tribute to the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, with Castro-Neves acting not just as band leader, guitarist and arranger, but as a direct connection to the source.
His band performed the material with both authenticity and creative freedom, so the classics rolled out with the careless ease of the bats flying across the dusky sky: The Waters of March, Quiet Nights , Wave and the rest.
Castro-Neves sings rather like Jobim, his modest but intensely musical baritone carrying the melody through the swishing music at hip height.
The effervescent Katia Moraes sang several songs, and our own Lily Diorhas never sounded better than she did joining the magic for How Insensitive and, later in the night, Dindi, a charming duet with Castro-Neves's nylon-string guitar.
Pianist Don Grusin, saxophonist and flautist Gary Meek and especially violinist Charlie Bisharat compounded the prevailing excellence. Laboriel and Acuna delivered a scintillating duet, and then, towards the end of the first set, Moreira finally emerged to sing a solo Desafinado, accompanying himself on tambourine.
Thereafter he either caressed his percussion within the bossa novas, or featured prominently, duetting with Tjupurru on didjeridu, and then leading four local percussionists on a parade around The Domain, culminating in an on-stage drumming extravaganza involving all the musicians, with Moreira now behind the kit. A wonderful collaboration.

For all musicians who are interested in the Didjeridu, I use the Didjeribone exclusively on stage because of it's versatility. No more excess baggage and the need to carry 10 different sized didjeridu's on tour! I have taught kids from 4 years old who can drone effortlessly using the Didjeribone and have been successful with teaching kids from 8 years old the cycle breathing technique used with Didj playing.
The Didjeribone website is www.didjeribone.net INTRODUCING THE DIDJERIBONE: Adrian Fabila Tjupurrula is pleased to present the DidjeriboneTM invented by Charlie McMahon, who first put didjeridu in a contemporary music context with the GONDWANALAND band. From over 40 years as a didj player Charlie has been able to design the Didjeribone as a versatile and easy to play instrument.
The Didjeribone is 100% made in Australia
DIDJERIBONE DESIGN PROCESS: Charlie's first Didjeribone made in 1981 came from his desire to expand the potential for didj in music. In traditional Aboriginal music didjeridus are not tuned precisely and mainly play a rhythmic drone to support a song. With Charlie's band GONDWANA didj became the focus so more was demanded of it. Different materials were tried. Metals were found to be unsuitable as they corrode from breath moisture and sound cold. Wood pipes tended to jam as wood absorbs moisture and the inner pipe expands more than the outer one. Plastics had none of these problems.
In 1995 Didjeribone was registered as a Trademark and the design process began to give the following qualities:
SMOOTH SLIDE ACTION: Custom made extrusion dies ensure a minimum clearance between the two pipes, so the Didjeribone slides effortlessly between the ten keys, but does not allow air to escape when fully extended.
PERMANENT & CLEAR KEY MARKS: The highest being G when closed, then there are seven keys etched into the yellow inner pipe. Running from F down to C and extending further you can reach B and Bb.
RUBBER MOUTH PIECE: Makes for easy contact with the lips and as the circumference is the optimum size it is easy to play, and does not require the wax often used to made wood didjeridus playable.
FLARED SOUND END: Give the Didjeribone a brighter and louder sound than linear shaped didjeridus.
LIGHT WEIGHT & DURABLE: Weighing less than 0.5kilograms the Didjeribone uses a minimum of materials so it can be played in a variety of positions, and is unlikely to break or cause damage if it is dropped.
COPYRIGHT PROVISIONS: The Didjeribone's red, yellow and black earth colours are (along with white) the earth colours of Australia and traditional Aborigine's art. The Didjeribone recognizes the indigenous roots of the didj. Paddy Fordam was paid for the right to reproduce his 'mimi spirit' figure on the didjeribone and site. Many artists who have contributed to the recordings shown on the booklet have copyright for the songs they have co-written with Charlie.

Amazing Technology for the experimental musician. Very simply, it is a form of Transducer that can be used in your mouth to pick up the slightest vibration that when amplified will blow your mind. Very addictive once you start playing with it....don't say I didn't warn you!

Hi friends,
Virtual Walkabout is a DVD series which I am proud to be involved with! A chance meeting with photographer Duncan Waddell kicked it all off and in June 2006 I recorded the soundtracks to the full Collection of Virtualwalkabout DVD's.
The soundscapes that you hear are all created in my mouth using the Face Bass and the Didjeribone.
