have you ever seen her face ?
wrinkles dance across like waves

rising eyebrows curling lips
swirling lashes falling lids 

deep tides rolling up her cheeks
with crashing foaming teeth she speaks

"bring me something sweet to eat
take off my shoes and bathe my feet"

it is her winter of despair
matted curls of snow white hair

"where is my God ?" she cries out loud,
what have i done to be allowed to live ?"

"while my oldest son lies under ground
and i must suffer bound in this cold bed ?"

"what right had he to die before me,
can you can you tell me please ?"

"pick me up and put me on my knees,
for i must beg and plead to die before

one more son of mine may leave
as my heart bleeds on my sleeve !"

it is her winter of despair

and i alone must now decide
whether she will live or die

tie a pink ribbon
around my chest

say sweet prayers
i'll be my healthy best

i never expected
this awesome challenge

to keep my breasts
from being ravaged

this daily crisis
to fight for my life

brings me inside
to find love within

as radiation treatments
irritate and burn my skin

but my truth and beauty
is far more than skin deep

and i've found the warm 
love i am sure to keep

not only the love
for myself and others

but also the compassion to
suffer chemo with another

for whatever i do
to keep my breasts

i do it for the love of those 
i hold close to my chest

the doors you open are also mine
layers pealed will reveal all in time

whatever gifts we may have to give
are better when received and lived

love and compassion are action verbs
gifts left unopened say do not disturb

our lives vibrate to higher space as we 
accept evolving to gratitude and grace
