The Shackeltons at Bruar Falls, Brooklyn, 10.16.09

kellystarbuck_shack_4103
“I’m in awe of you people who live in this city, paying 700 dollar a month rents.  I live in fear and I pay only 300 a month,” singer Mark Redding mentions during our chat before the Shackeltons’ set.  ‘Mark, make that 700 times three,’ is my retort.  Ah, if it weren’t so.  Living the band life in rural Pennsylvania may be quite a different thing than our struggle to support the higher rent artistic life in NYC, but then again, we all have our crosses to bear.
The Shackeltons are an honest band.  On stage, they are cathartic and visceral in a theatrical sense, but not in a faux or showy, character-driven kind of way.  Watching, and better yet, feeling, their pure emotion pour out on the stage is the most real kind of theater.  You get a sense that Redding and the band don’t perform in order to seek attention, but it’s just something they need to do.  It’s a release for both audience and performers, after all.
kellystarbuck_shack_4095
Redding seems to have a nature that’s built on a kind of awareness and nurturing for those around him.  He invites questions instead of passing opinions, often with mysterious leanings, both in real life and in the lyrics of the Shackeltons’ songs ["Your movement is my treasure chest."]  And as Redding has said in a past interview: “I will have to say that life in general takes courage, faith, hope, love, persistence, songs, and a good dose of humor- that is what we have in common with Ernest [Shackelton]. We don’t want to give up, and we know that this journey is definitely not all peaches and creme. But we will survive and we will have a story for our loved ones.”
The reason that their shows are still sometimes intimate, attendance-wise, is because some people don’t know what to make of their act.  Perhaps all that inner self being exorcized, and all those gut-felt revelations, may cause a timid embarrassment in the minds of new spectators.
“This song goes out to all the mothers,” Redding insists at one point in the set.  “If it weren’t for them, we wouldn’t be here.”  (Yes, we’ve heard this before, but when it’s said with as much of an intent as Redding’s, it’s as if music had not yet been invented).  We danced wildly.  We danced, because we had to.–Cleo and Zabatay/photos by Kelly Starbuck

Happy Mothers Day to all.  Moms especially.

NPR's All Songs Considered reported today:

Decorating The Stage For Mom

by Bob Boilen, with The Shackeltons' Mark Redding

I recently saw The Shackeltons at the South by Southwest music festival and conference in Austin, Texas. I probably saw a hundred bands that week, but none were as impassioned as this one.

I was particularly taken with the heartfelt emotions of singer Mark Redding, who performed on a stage decorated with fresh-cut flowers -- flowers that Redding would toss into the audience in bursts of ecstasy and rapture. It both delighted me and puzzled me.

In honor of Mother's Day, Redding tells us why he decorates every Shackeltons show with flowers.

For the past five years, I've been delivering flowers for a local flower shop -- All Occasions Florist, on Main Street in Chambersburg -- in exchange for flowers for The Shackeltons' shows.

When I was 12 years old, I used to go to the local Chambersburg radio station (Mix 95.1) and help the DJ pick songs to play on the Sunday-morning Gospel Rock show. This DJ's wife had a flower shop, and when I grew up and started this band, DJ Scott asked me to help with deliveries on busy holidays.

I said I would deliver flowers for the payment of flowers. Thus, fresh flowers at all our shows.

Having flowers at our shows is important to me. My mom has always had her original artwork hanging in our home. I now have it in my apartment. Her aesthetics have been ingrained in my heart. My mom was diagnosed with a mental illness years ago, and we found out that she cannot paint while she is on her medication. So her art is very rare. And in her honor (and that of my father and stepfather), I decorate the stage.

This Mother's Day is very special for me. For the past five years, my mom (a widow twice) has been fighting ovarian cancer. Each year, she wins the battle with the help of a great doctor, chemo treatments, her great sense of humor, daily lunches she prepares for her two sons and two grandsons during their work break, and the dinner she makes me each night. (I live a block away from her.) Mom has eight kids and 21 grandchildren.

Mom is quite the wonder woman. She also hosts a local homeless man for breakfast each morning. His name is Jim, and he's always dreamed of being a filmmaker. Mom's other friend is an elderly lady, Rose, who brings Mom fresh produce and bread from the local Salvation Army. Rose is a friendly pack rat, as well as a former hunter, trapper and all-around mountain lady.

The past few years have been my time to make music and be a friend to my mother. As the baby of eight children, I am the only one yet unmarried, and I want to make sure my mom doesn't feel lonely. I travel often with my band, and she is proud of me, but she can't wait till I return. Like I said, I live a block away in Chambersburg. There's a bridge over a waterfall, an old log cabin and a busy downtown street.

In our song "Emergency," I speak of missing my family. I speak of blue eyes. I miss my dad and stepdad. And, as I see my mom in sometimes frail and joyous moments, I feel the urgency of life. It's my desire to bring all of that sweat, swagger, tears and hopes into our shows. One of our new songs is called "The End." That song was written after taking a morning walk with Mom -- and, after hugging her, hearing her say, "This could be my last day."

So if you see tree branches and flowers at our live shows, now you know: My mom is an artist, and I carry that with me to every town and to every club. I couldn't feel at home on a stage without such reminders. And for Mother's Day, I'm happy to have her alive, along with her paintings of birds, birdhouses, lakes, boats and, of course, flowers.

Ten days on the road- 3,000 miles (7 shows- Morgantown, Lexington, Nashville, Little Rock, Byran, and 2 in Austin)... here is  our official
Top 10 SXSW tour highlights:

1. Britt from Spoon was at our show, and came to meet us, and kindly bought CD.  Germany's
Reeperbahn Festival hosted the show.  UK's Babyboom Records owner, Chris Williams, gave us a copy of their new compilation CD which "Get Out" is featured.

2.
Austin's Happiness and Amelia's Retro hosted us and Sumner Erickson
(Rocky's brother) for an unforgettable outdoor show.  Sumner's mom (85
yrs) danced non-stop.
We broke 2 chairs during our set-
not guitars, chairs.

3. A fine band, Cage the Elephant ( EMI , Jive), wrapped us in
hugs and said they heard "Bloke" on the radio in England and fell in
love with us.

4.
Bob Boilen from NPR's All Songs Considered was at the show, came up to meet, and kindly bought CD.  Said we were a
highlight of his day (put us in his top list w/ PJ Harvey). Link to the
blog cast below.

5.
Little Rock, AR rocked.  Circa 76 Record Store, Frown Pow'r, and the fine people made our mid-tour stop very memorable.

6. Josh Modell (Spin Magazine, the Onion)  came out and wrote about our show
(see below).  Doug Van Pelt of HM magazine also came out w/ big love (see
write-up below).

7.  Lexington, KY's Al's Bar- owner Josh treats bands right.  The bouncer, Levi, is the best- even offered to park our van. Madelyn was a great host/promoter.

8.  Nashville's showed us hospitality.  Free lunch from Charlie Peacock.  Housing from Billy Swayze- a great musician and writer.

9.  Andrew and Gina made us the best quiche meal, in Knoxville, 16 hours into our drive home.  Also sent us home with a bag of apples, peaches, and oranges.

10. Demon Beat showed us Morgantown rocks harder than any town in the USA on a Friday night.

Music: Josh's day four (bloody but unbowed)

March 22, 2009 Saturday
is the day at SXSW Music on which people really start dragging: You
start seeing people sitting on every available sittable surface (curbs,
window sills, etc.) and the energy of Sixth Street is a little less
frantic. But it’s a nice sort of fatigue, and it doesn’t stop the
parade of concerts happening in every nook and cranny. But it does keep
me in bed a little bit later—nothing seems more important than a bit of
chill time.

My evening started late with The Shackeltons, an inspiring
rock band from Pennsylvania whose self-titled record from last year was
pretty incredible. They
played with passion, dedicating their final song to everybody’s
mothers, and encouraging audience members to put their arms around
strangers. A young lady came up and hugged me, isn’t that nice? Britt
Daniel of Spoon was right up front, rocking out.

The Shackeltons

THE SHACKELTONS

I had one more show to catch before SXSW '09 was over for me. It was
this last issue's "Declaration of Independants" artist, Mark Redding
and his band, The Shackeltons. It was a great finale for me, as the
band was just amazing. Redding was holding flowers above his head, but
that wasn't the only thing that made me recall the first few times I'd
seen mewithoutYou. This guy had the same charismatic and riveting
personality onstage as one Aaron Weiss. "Thank God for Otis Redding,"
the frontman announced. "We yearn to make you dance deep inside." He
introduced a song called "The Ache" and said, "We want you to shake
your heart a little bit." Midway during the song he fell to the ground
to shake. When he jumped up, at times he sucked his thumb with palm
open and clapped that hand with the other. The band flavored the show
with almost a constant, danceable beat. "You raided my island, but I've
asked for no rent," he cried after a song that he introduced with a
dedication to pirates. Later he asked everyone in the audience to hug
someone next to them. It was kind of awesome to hug and be hugged and
see it going on almost all over the room. This band is now a new entry
to my "amazing" and "special" lists.

Hello!
Right now we are in Lexington, KY.  Morgantown, WV and Lexington showed us some of the best hospitality from people (our host, the crowds, the club owners) we have experienced in a long time.  Next stops are Nashville, Little Rock, Byron, and Austin, TX.  In the middle of traveling, it is good to take a look back and remind ourselves of the blessings we have had this past year...  and Seattle's www.SoundOnTheSound.com has been documenting our shows...
Here are some of their reportings:

August 27, 2008   Needle in the Hay: The Shackeltons

Artist Name: The Shackeltons
Hails From:Chambersburg, PA
Sounds Like:poetic insanity with punk riffs, a front-man for the ages, and a drumming prodigy
Latest Release: The Shackeltons

If you’re even a casual reader of this blog, you know we love The Shackeltons.
A lot. This five-piece from clear across the country is making some of
the most emotionally compelling music today, with a debut album and
live performances that do nothing short of speak to my soul. If you
haven’t been convinced by the hundreds of photos and
tens and tens of previous posts on The Shackeltons, nothing will
convince you. But I contend, The Shackeltons are one of the few
unmissable acts in America. Anytime they are near your town be it a
work night or an anniversary, seeing The Shackeltons do what they do
best with such abandon and authenticity, is worth any consequences.
Obviously that means there is no excuse to miss the band perform on
Sunday, I’ll be there pressed against the stage–beaming like a proud
mama and breathless from what is sure to be another incredible
performance.

The Shackeltons ::: photo by Abbey
Thought I was done with Bumbershoot, but I could not in good conscience ignore The Shackeltons phenomenal performance during the festival.
While it came as no surprise to us that people began to flock closer
and closer to the stage as soon as The Shackeltons got in to their set
and frontman Mark Redding started talking–it was great to see. The
people standing around me, professional photographers and first time
Shackeltons witnesses stood dumbfounded–with mouths agape in grins. The
was a lot of looking back and forth and neighbors in a–can you believe
what you’re seeing kind of way?
Mark, who is always an engaging frontman, put on a show for the
ages. He threw himself on the ground with abandon, swung off speaker
chords, crowd-surfed, stood on suitcases, fell of suitcases, doused
himself in water, ran off-stage to give Kyle the stage manager a kiss,
and never missed a lyric or note that he was singing during his antics.
On the mic between songs Mark told the ever-growing and engaged
audience about wanting to be a black preacher, while consistently
referring to Seattleites as fish killers, introducing the wrong song
with elaborate stories, and when he demanded we dance–we all did. With
shows like this, that leave old and new audiences alike stunned and
enamored, it won’t be long before The Shackeltons finally get the
attention they deserve.
