Current mood:  cheerful
With over a hundred amazing entries in the create-your-own-superhero contest, I didn’t have the heart to choose one over the others. Therefore, as much as a copout as it is, I used the random number generator to pick for me (Yes, rage against the machine!) and came up with: Susan Burns! (BTW, the eyepatch and ink were a particularly nice touch!) Susan, you have a message waiting for you in your inbox, and your ARC of CITY OF SOULS will arrive as soon as you pmail me your snailmail addy. For the rest of you, I hope you had as much fun creating your superheroes as I did mine, and I thank you for your entries. Many LOL moments were had. You guys are the best!

For all those readers and lovers of anything Urban Fantasy - or for those, like me, with a Kim Harrison reader-girl fettish - do check out the May issue of Locus (THE science fiction and fantasy industry magazine). Kim is featured on the cover, and the entire issue is devoted exploring Urban Fantasy, with commentary by agents, editors, booksellers, and other authors. Here's what I lifted from the table of contents:

 L O C U S L O O K S A T U R B A N F A N T A S Y

An Interview with Kim Harrison: Secret Identity / 6

An Interview with Patricia Briggs: Mercy and Faith / 30

An Interview with Marjorie Liu: Hopeless Romantic / 41

Commentary:

Urban Fantasy by Liza Groen Trombi / 32

In the Beginning... by Ginjer Buchanan / 33

Paranormal Thoughts by Charlaine Harris / 34

The Urban Fantasy Heroine by Kelley Armstrong / 34

Urban Fantasy by Carrie Vaughn / 34

Looking Beyond the Sexy Babe on the Cover – Which Subgenre Is This? by Maryelizabeth Hart / 35

It’s Not About the Monsters by Vicki Pettersson / 36

The Flight of the Bumblebee by Mike Carey / 36

Accidental Urban Fantasist by T.A. Pratt / 38

Our World, Only Better? by Diana Gill / 39

A Reader’s Guide: Recommendations by Carolyn Cushman

So UF lovers should be all over this one -- great resource, too, if you're thinking of writing in the genre.

Enjoy, friendlies!

Okay, so it's not MY book trailer.

It's A book trailer.

The best EVAH.

Totally inappropriate, so if you're young and innocent, look away.

For the rest of you sickos, I'm linking to my next book purchase:

Helpful hints for the holidays.

Wednesday, December 03, 2008
My warmest wishes for the holiday season! 2008 has been a busy year, but with CITY OF SOULS now in my editor's hands, I'm looking forward to 2009.

But first, for those of you in the Las Vegas area, I'll be doing a personal appearance at the wonderful bookstore, Cheesecake and Crime, [[http://www.cheesecakeandcrime.com/]] on Saturday, December 13th, from 4-6 pm. This is a dual signing with author Chris Marie Green, [[http://www.vampirebabylon.com/]] who writes the Vampire Babylon series. We'll be interviewing each other as well as taking questions from the audience, so to meet either of us - or just to enjoy some fabulous cheesecake and espresso in a homey environment - please take time out of your holiday shopping to stop by and say hello! I'm excited about this event as C&C is my favorite local independent bookstore, and Chris Marie Green is pure awesomeness herself (and surprisingly sweet for someone who writes bloodsuckers -- but don't tell her I said so!)

I also just found out I'll be attending the New York Comic-Con [[http://www.nycomiccon.com/App/homepage.cfm?moduleid=2577&appname=100453]] on February 6-8, 2009. This will be my first time at the New York venue (I've attended San Francisco and San Diego in the past) and my first time in the City in February. ("Brrr..." says the desert rat.) My panels include:

Kick-Ass Authors and their Killer Heroines: Kim Harrison, Jeaniene Frost, Vicki Pettersson, Jocelynn Drake, Margaret Ronald, moderated by Michael Spradlin.
Why are vampires, werewolves, fairies, angels, demons and denizens of the otherworld so damned sexy? USA Today notes, "The hottest bad boys in contempary fiction are cold-blodded vampires. Not since Anne Rice's bestselling series about Lestat have so many readers thirsted for novels about blood drinkers who are sexy as well as scary." The authors making names for themselves writing these dark daydreams have opinions on the category-killer appeal of their books...and why readers are turned on by kick-ass female protagonists who are just as strong and in-control as their He-Man mates.

Okay, I'd go just to meet those other authors. ;-)

Meanwhile -- whether I see you in-person or between the pages -- all my best wishes to you and yours!
