At Last ! Ronny Munroe’s solo album is now also available in Europe. A few years ago I reviewed Ronny’s EPInternal Quest. Only one track has made it to this first solo album The Fire Within and that is the killer songDesperate Man. Ronny got some help from guests like Michael Wilton (Queensryche) on Sea of Sorrows andWhat You Choose to Call Hell (I Call Home), Mr. Randy Cooper of THC (Texas Hippie Coalition) on Ride Me, and of course his friend and Metal Church guitarist Rick Van Zandt.

After the collapse op the Metal institute Metal Church, Ronny didn’t fall in a black hole, but was looking forward to present his own album to You. He also got a lot of help from Metal Church mastermind Kurt Vanderhoof and that you can hear especially in the songwriting and the guitar riffs. Twelve tracks are on this pure metal album, and I can tell you that if you liked Metal Church already, you can stop reading now and make a run to your local store to get your copy of The Fire Within

As said, with the songwriting involvement of Kurt Vanderhoof, who’s also responsible for the production together with Ronny, there are a lot of comparison with the collapsed Metal Church. At first you have the characteristic riffs of Kurt well played by Rick and of course the voice from Ronny. Songs like What You Choose To Call Hell (I Call Home), Deafening HypocrisyDeliriumIvory Tower and especially the already mentioned Desperate Mancould have easily been on a great Metal Church album. The opener Far begins with a great riff and a hellish scream from Ronny where after the song exposes itself as a great rock song on which you can break your neck easily during a live concert. Rebuild The Ruins is again driven by a great riff and with Demon Opera Ronny puts you on the wrong leg thinking he’s made ballad. But after the quiet intro again a nice rock song opens itself, with a surprising break in-between.

The song that comes at close range with Metal Church is the crushing track Desperate Man[/]i]. If you know the song Badlands from the Metal Church album Blessing In Disguise you will have an idea what you can expect. The last song is Man On The Silver Mountain originally from Rainbow. A well conducted cover from Ronny Munroe and his band and a nice closing of this album. Now Metal Church has split-up, and finally Ronny Munroe’s solo album is in stores, I don’t think that we have to wait long before we will hear again from this workaholic. Maybe we get the chance to see him somewhere on stage or otherwise I’m sure that he’s busy writing tracks for the next album. You can follow Ronny on : www.myspace.com/ronnymunroe

Hanna Tsepesh: Hello Ronny Munroe! Thanks so much for accepting our invitation and welcome to the THE GATES OF METAL! First of all: how are you and how are the things doing with your concerts?

Ronny: Thanks for having me and things are going very well with the Cd and I have some shows coming up in October.

Hanna Tsepesh: You are much known in metal scene since the 80’s but some young people don’t know you. So, can you tell little bit about you and when you start in music?

Ronny: I started playing drums first, then I became a singer and I’ve never looked back. After playing in different bands over the years I was lucky enough to land the frontman spot for Metal Church, co-wrote three records and toured the world. Now I have put out my first solo CD “The Fire Within” and I am going to continue to tour and do what I love to do.

Hanna Tsepesh: What are the inspirations to create the lyrics?

Ronny: Life, Love and the pursuit of Metal! That’s the simple answer but really it can be about politics, religion, love , hate or whatever I may be feeling at the time.

Hanna Tsepesh: What are your favorite bands at the moment? You have any musician that you admire the most?

Ronny: I listen to a lot of music but right now the new Heaven and hell and Mastodon are my favs as of right now. Both these records are great!

Hanna Tsepesh: You have or had any singing lessons or any other preparation? You play any instrument?

Ronny: I had a few lessons over the years. When I prepare for a show I usually do a few minutes of warm ups, drink a glass of wine to loosen up , then I go out and rock! I play drums and a little guitar and I’m always striving to learn more.
Hanna Tsepesh: Let’s talk about the “The Fire Within” album. For people who don’t listen yet can you tell to us what we can expect from this album?

Ronny: 12 heavy hitting songs. I am very proud of this record and how it came together, it’s pure old school power metal with a twist.

Hanna Tsepesh: How has the response been to the album by the media and fans?
Ronny: Very well so far, the reviews are good and the fan reaction is solid. For a first effort “The Fire Within” is burning brightly .

Hanna Tsepesh: what is your favorite music in this album and why?

Ronny: I think all the songs are solid but if I had to pick a favorite I would say Desperate Man and the reason is it’s the first song I wrote on guitar and the meaning of the lyrics. The lyrics talk about perseverance and never giving up on your dreams!

Hanna Tsepesh: If one of our readers wants to buy your album, what they can do?

Ronny: It’s every where!
Rat-Pak Records
CM Distro
Metal Heaven
I tunes
Disc Union
Rhapsody
Myspace.com/ronnymunroe
Myspace.com/ratpakrecords
And a few other places as well!
Hanna Tsepesh: What is your personal opinion about metal in our days and what is the best advice that you can tell to the young bands out there?

Ronny: Metal will always be around no matter what, the people won’t let that die, ever. As far as advice, have a back up plan, get your education because it’s a very tough business so be prepared.

Hanna Tsepesh: You want to send any message for your fans?

Ronny: I want to thank all the fans that have supported me through my years with Metal Church and beyond. I have great fans that support me very much and that makes me a very lucky guy!

Hanna Tsepesh: Thanks so much for your answers and time! THE GATES OF METAL wish you a big success and good luck for your projects! We hope to see you very soon at Portugal…

Ronny: Thank you Hanna and I hope to get to Portugal very soon. Take care and keep the metal faith.

Hanna Tsepesh: You are very welcome Ronny! All the best and thank you!

On Stage: Ronny Munroe

October 17th, Houston Texas

This was the show I'd been waiting for since August of last year when Ronny Munroe joined Houston's Azrael's Bane on stage at the Rock the Bayou festival in Houston for two songs, one of Bane's, one from Ronny's then, to-be-released solo album. Finally, over a year later as part of the Texas Metal Meltdown Tour with Helstar and Militia. Tonight's show was going to be special. He picked this show to record the live portion of his video for his song Delirium. They even spent most of the afternoon filming without the crowd.
After three local support bands and Austin's Militia, it was finally time. Ronny came out with his touring band that includes some of Houston's best musicains, Mike Heald (ex-Helstar, James Rivera's Sabbath Judas Sabbath) on guitar, and three members of Azrael's Bane - Jeff Clifton (guitar), Brent Marches (bass), and Rick Ward (drums). They opened with two Metal Church songs, Hero's Soul from Weight of the World and Crawling To Extinction from This Present Wasteland. Then it was video time. Ronny explained that, even though they were playing it live, what would be coming out of the speakers would be the CD track so everything would sync with the video. To be honest, as good as they sounded to start with, I doubt too many people would've noticed. After that, the classic Metal Church track, Watch The Children Prey and one of my favorite MC songs, Disappear from A Light In The Dark. From then on, only solo material. Far turned the crowd into a massive headbanging mob and led directly into Deafening Hypocrasy. Finally, one more time through Delirium and the set was over.
Ronny had the crowd going crazy the whole set, and his band proved to be more than just a hired backup band there to play the material and stay out of the way. From Jeff and Mike's shredding guitar work and Brent's infectous enthusiasm, to Rick's perfect blend of power and flash behind the drums, they proved to be as much a part of the show as Ronny himself.
Though the set was way too short, it covered all the bases, one song from each of Ronny's Metal Church albums, a Metal Church classic, and a couple of his new solo songs in addition to two shots of Delirium for the video. Whatever the show lacked in length, it made up for in quality and enthusiasm, because nobody left disappointed. So, until the video hits the airwaves, go pick up Ronny Munroe's The Fire Within CD, and while your at it, check out Modern Day Babylon from Azrael's Bane on BlastZone Records.

Hey Metal Heads,

The Houston show was off the hook, great crowd that was full of energy…the video shoot earlier in the day went great with Ross of Zenfilm and crew.  We had a lot of fun, and I was very impressed with my band, Mike, Rick, Brent and Jeff…I couldn’t ask for a better group of guys to work with! A huge thank you to Ross Wells and all at Zenfilm, and to my evil nurse/rocker-chick Jordan, you’re the best, I’ll never forget the tremendous experience I had and I look forward to many more in the future!

Keep watching the site for tour dates and for when the new video comes out…can’t wait for everybody to see it - it’s gonna’ be very ‘disturbing’!! Here are some concert pictures for now and I’ll have some stills from the video shoot up shortly.

Peace
Ronny
