The dudes at the Compound are happy to have hosted super-producer-photographer-veggie benz drivin'-renaissance man Matt Wignall as he brought the Cold War Kids back to the LBC for a day of recording and filming. One short day was all it took to get five tracks soon to be up on this here MySpace TV.

Fantastic!

Go to Guitar Center and pick up the June issue of Performer Magazine (a Free publication, also online at performermag.com).
Anthony gives insight into his approach to studio recording and what makes the Compound a great place to create organic recordings!

If you don't have a Guitar Center near you, or feel equally allergic to GC as I do, find the full article in our Photo Gallery.

If you'd like to start your next recording project with us, please contact me with any questions you might have. Thanks! - Jeff

We've had a busy summer at the Compound thus far. Here's the highlight reel...

The Mars Volta finished up overdubs for their next record over 9 days. They brought their own engineers, but it still goes to show that the Compound is a great sounding room. Unfortunately no photos were allowed during their stay, so you'll just have to take me word for it. We even had special guest John Frusciante stop by and blow our minds. It was a very exciting week indeed.

Greater California has put the finishing touches on their record, yet to be titled. Hopefully this record gets them the attention they deserve.

Jessica Kaczmarek has started working on her own songs after playing in Busstop Hurricanes and numerous other local bands. Think Roy Orbison meets David Lynch meets Mod. She's one classy gal.

Ikey Owens brought in more work in the form of the Lookdaggers, Free Moral Agents, and a new production project that's in the works.

Finally, the summer has been the start of me finding my own footing in the engineering world. Instead of photos in this update, included are two mp3's from sessions that I engineered (note: both songs are unmastered):

the Victorians: Give Me What You Got

This is 1 of 4 songs that was recorded over 2 evenings with the Victorians. Brad Lindsay, a Compound alum, kindly came to me with this new project headed by friend Erik Trickett. After seeing them play at the Prospector and knowing of Brad's good taste in music, I was excited to work with the band on their own brand of piano/gtr based rock/pop music. You'll have to pick up the EP to find more of Brad's tasty guitar work and Eric's catchy tunes.

Business Cats: the Zoo

These kids are rocking. They're not modeling themselves after all the pretty bands in the pretty magazines. They came to me talking to me about bands like the Clash, David Bowie, and Sonic Youth. High School really should include a school of rock, because the Business Cats have a great start to great careers. I'm looking forward to see what they come up with next. Like the Victorians, the Business Cats recorded 4 songs over the course of 2 evening sessions. You can pick up their new EP at any of their shows.

So if you'd like me to engineer your next project, just email meor call Anthony (562-335-5623) and ask for the Jeff Lewis discount!

Until next time,

March is rolling right along. Just started a record with locals, the Secret 6. Again, we're tracking basics to 16-track tape, dumping to ProTools, editing takes, and starting overdubs. The photos below were taken during the tracking of the song Settle Down. This was an abnormal setup as Glen was playing keys instead of guitar. It's great having space to spread out and have the full band playing in one room. Next weekend we will start overdubs. Keeping fingers crossed, we will have a record by the end of the month.

Once again, I'd urge anyone who's taken photos of sessions at the Compound to please email me. Many great sessions have gone by and I'd like to report them all, alas I don't have any photos to share. Thanks.

This weekend was yet another testament to a well rehearsed band getting a solid chunk of work done. Repeater cut 8 tracks, finished electric guitars, bass, piano, and organ in 2 1/2 days. Not to mention that all the basics were tracked to our Otari 1-inch tape machine then transfered into ProTools. That's what I call efficiency. For all you recording nerds out there I can list all the microphones used on which instruments, through which preamps and compressors and equalizers, but it would all be meaningless since I can't play you what anything sounds like yet (However, the photos below show that we used a Sony C-38b and AKG D112 on the kick drum, MXL V67 on toms, and Shure sm58's for talkback mics). For now, just trust me that the tones are happening. So without further ado, here are some photos...

First off, special thanks to Schreyer Audio for providing an army of amplifiers. As pictured below, Marc Ford surrounded himself in amps, often using several at once to blend a perfect guitar tone. During basic tracks Marc had no less than 3 amps on full-blast at all times in the same room with the drums and bass. Now that's the Compound way! Let it bleed, my friends. Let it bleed. The idea behind this record is to feature guitar tone and technique with only the necessary producion elements. While the arrangements might be sparse, the sounds are massive.

FUZZ MACHINE!

Lastly, who needs scanners when you can take a picture of a photo in a magazine? Here's the photo of Cold War Kids printed in Rolling Stone taken at the Compound by our good friend Matt Wignall. All instruments pictured belong to us, so you too can use the Univox violin bass, noname archtop guitar, Emerson upright piano, U.S. kick drum, or marimba. Go Compound Go!
