Social Task - Demo

May 26, 2009
Social TaskSocial Task follows their 7" with an eighteen song demo CD. This band that formed in the late 1970’s from the Huntington Beach punk scene, reunited about three years ago and have since been creating a new legacy for themselves as one of the most active bands in Orange County. Most of these songs are from the band’s original catalog, and although this may be the only release of 2009 with lyrics referencing "President Jimmy" [Carter], somehow the music still sounds fresh.
At times the band’s music takes influence from early Oi, particularly in the Upstarts style sing alongs featured in "Hangin’ Around" and the mid tempo approach in "Dangerous." At other points the sound is almost proto hardcore with faster songs like "Full Circle" and "Can’t Stop." For the most part the guitar and vocals are melodic, but "Bomb Iran" is more heavy and angry. Also featured are worthy covers of the Eyes ("Disneyland"), Generation X ("Day By Day," "100 Punks"), and a dubbed out reworking of PiL’s "Not A Love Song," which Social Task calls "Anti Love Song." This is certainly another great release from Task and anticipation is running high for their full length coming out on Dr. Strange.

Social Task - Self titled release out on Artifix Records

September 22, 2008

Social Task Punk Record Social Task sprouted from Huntington Beach's chaotic and ultra violent hardcore punk scene of the late 1970's.  Just like the scene that spawned them Social Task's songs reflect an anti social "We don't give a fuck" attitude- dealing with topics like doing drugs, committing acts of violence, running from the police, and generally being the subject of controversy. The music is fast and cutting, taking no prisoners. There is nothing funny or cute about this record. There are no gimmicks or apologies given- it's simply a musical documentation of a way of life. With the first side featuring songs from a 1979 Warner Bros recording session (resulting from the band being scouted at a gig opening for Black Flag at the Starwood) and the second side featuring 2007 recordings of songs from their vintage catalog,  this record makes it clear that Task's music remains raw and vital.

Social Task EP Review

This months issue of Maximum Rock'n'Roll has a review of the SOCIAL TASK EP. For those of you that don't want to buy the mag, here is what the review says:

SOCIAL TASK - "1979 Studio Recordings" EP

Old-time OC beach punk from '79 finally sees the light of day with re-recorded versions on the flip. Good shit all around: the A-side is classic SoCal 'core like KAOS, HATED, ADOLESCENTS, or FUNERAL - way more punk than a lot of the beach crowd. The B-side is recently recorded versions of old songs, which still sound great and head more into Hostage Records territory (which in turn took a lot of the chops from bands like this). If you dig the wave of bands like THE PUSHERS, STITCHES, etc., this is well worth digging into. (TB)
