We are opening for Mogwai on Sept. 16th at the National -- if you are interested, please buy tickets from us. You'll save $$$ on booking fees and you'll be supporting us (we aren't making anything off the door for this show -- no biggie since we got on the bill late).

We have been promised beer and soundcheck though! Woo hoo!

Hello Friends,

Just an FYI that the fine folks at Pitchfork have reviewed the track "Huntsman" and have included it in their latest "Forkcast". You can also stream the track, or download it.

Here's a bit of a quote:

"it's been a long, long while since four minutes of instrumental rock held my attention so tightly. No build-and-release here; "Huntsman" is all climax..."

Review from today's Sound As Language (thanks, mates!):

"When I first wrote about Richmond, VA's Tulsa Drone here, I made the statement that the band's music sounded like it was meant to be played in an art gallery. Their new album, Songs From A Mean Season, certainly does nothing to change my thoughts about the band. This is Tulsa Drone's second full-length and it has a similar overall dynamic to their first album, No Wake. As much as I loved No Wake, that can only be a good thing.

Tulsa Drone has a unique, refreshing approach to instrumental music. Where much of instrumental music seems completely contrived, Tulsa Drone avoid all those usual pitfalls. What makes the band so different is their approach to the songs. Where most instrumental bands are guitar-based, Tulsa Drone base their songs around the bass dulcimer. That unique instrument gives the band a memorable sound. These songs truly feel like works of art. The band is so adept at creating a certain mood within their songs that soundtrack producers should be lining up outside their door by now...

I hate to say that Songs From A Mean Season is a mood piece because that would seem to sell it far too short. The band is certainly mining a cold, dark place though. Whatever the case Tulsa Drone have created a beautiful follow-up to their outstanding debut album. It is such a wonderful change of pace to hear instrumental music that is not plagued by any genre norms or constrictions. Tulsa Drone have dug out quite a nice little niche for themselves."

One thing that I have come to enjoy about Tulsa Drone and their latest album Songs from a Mean Season is that they don't necessarily rely on the quiet to loud aesthetics commonly used within the genre. Something you'll read often about Tulsa Drone is that their music contains an almost cinematic feel to it, and while listening to Songs from a Mean Season I couldn't agree more. That aspect of the bands sound is partly the reason I've been able to really enjoy this album. It has a completely different approach to what I am used to, it's not relying on the same old tried and true methods nor does it buy into any of the genres tired clichés.

We are always humbled by anyone taking the time to listen and write, but especially so when the reviewer really gets what we're going after. More here:

Hello Friends,

Well, it's been a long time coming but we are pleased to announce that
"Songs from a Mean Season", our second full-length CD is out today and on
sale at Plan 9 in Carytown. It's a split release between Dry County Records
and The Perpetual Motion Machine (thanks Paul!).

Please celebrate the release with us on Thursday, May 17th (see flyer,
attached) as we perform along with our good friends Caspian and Marionette
at the Hyperlink (old Biograph/Grace St. Theater) at 814 West Grace St.
Bands start at 8 p.m.

The new CD is also available along with "No Wake", our long out-of-print
debut CD (now re-pressed) at http://www.theperpetualmotionmachine.com for
only $9 each (both together for $16).

In other news, we've been awarded the "band of the week" spot on the Silent
Ballet website: http://www.thesilentballet.com/
They also interviewed Erik & Peter and gave us a rather glowing review --
thanks, guys!

Finally, a new epic-length demo can be found on our Myspace page. It's a
work in progress, but a really good one at that. We think you'll like it.

Hoping that you all are well and look forward to the 17th!

Love,

Erik Peter Scott Jim & Kevin

Hello Friends,

We are proud to announce the release of "Songs from a Mean Season" out officially on May 8th through The Perpetual Motion Machine and Dry County Records. This CD was recorded in 2005-2006 in Asheville, NC and while it took us a long time to release, we think you'll agree that the end result was well worth it....

BTW, it might be available at Plan 9 as early as this weekend. Lots of love,

Tulsa Drone
Richmond, VA

Some nice words in advance of the album release by the Relative Theory Records blog:

"Soundtracks from a dark movie about trains and rivers."

That quote was taken from the "Sounds Like" catergory on Tulsa Drone's myspace and frankly, I couldn't agree more. Tulsa Drone, from Richmond, VA., pull the dark, Absinthe soaked memories from your mind and make you face them, no matter how unpleasent or unsettling they may be. With guitars that shimmer and shine like sunlight on a glassy lake and a dulcimer that haunts each song, Tulsa Drone captures a mood and tone that is much broader and cinematic then most other contemporary post-rock acts.

Well it's taken us approximately three years to deliver, but it will astonish and astound you like no other recording you will EVER HEAR! Master and art left here last week and I've been going through something like what post-natal depression must be like. Seriously, it was a big ginormous baby that took us a long time to get just right.

The next one will not take as long. Promise.

OVer and out xox
