But when will you be done? Once you find that thing in life that is worth working your ass off for, worth living and dying for, then you start on a journey that really has no end. Whether it's love, career, art, whatever your focus, you wake up in the morning and suddenly it's not a big sigh anymore when you have to get up and face the day. Interesting enough, sometimes we have to work twice as hard on our art while something else sustains us in the meantime. Burn that midnight oil! It's the only way it gets done. No one else is gonna do it for you!
Lately I have been feeling the burn and the hustle. I've found a place in my mind where I WANT to accept the challenge and grow. Finally. I've been waiting to feel this way for a while. It only happened when I allowed it to. You'd be surprised what you can accomplish. I never thought I'd be where I am now. I remember the days of singing in the car to old funk tapes and thinking, "I know I can sing this, I know I understand it and feel it. " My voice was untapped and the only way to develop it was to GO FOR IT. And now, it's time for the next level. And then after that, the next level. It never stops. It's the same with everything in life. I think maybe love, peace, things like that are the only constants. We just keep on struggling and pushing until our time is done. We try to give of ourselves , we try to help others, ourselves and our loved ones. The search never ends, I think. I'm not there yet. I'm going to do my best to keep it up and keep on keeping on. Once you think you've gotten to a certain place, then you look out into the distance and realize just how far you have to go. yay.

We just arrived home from a long weekend away in good ol' Upstate New York. First, we'd like to send out a big 'thanks' to all the fans (and family) who came out to our shows. Also, thanks to everyone who started off our residency at the Bitter End last week. We always love your support...
...we rolled out of New York City in the Idler Thursday afternoon into the great wilderness between here and the far away town of Ithaca, NY. As we traversed through the Catskill Mountains we discussed our plans for the future as we do almost every time we travel - plans for songs, arrangements, random business, etc. Amidst all of this there's always time for developing our personal banter, a sampling of local cuisines and the obsessive listening to our quarky music collections. Thursday night's show was at an always hospitable (but unairconditioned) club called the Nines near Cornell University. We ate and drank with our good friends from the band Revision and played a sweltering show that proved to contain amazingly damp performances of our favorite material. Later .. crashing ourselves in our sleeping quarters we formed an impromptu jam session with our friends featuring two organs (one with a 'magic chord' button that Dan couldn't stop touching), piano, guitar, drums, assorted percussion and the tribal voice of Mofongo Dupree.
Friday's temperatures proved to be debilitating. After Josh and Pat went for their morning (or was it afternoon?) runs in the scorching heat, the band gorged itself at the local diner followed by a trip to the giant cookie store next door. After realizing that massive amounts of cookie dough was not the solution to the late spring heat, the band decided to trek to its next destination, Syracuse, NY to seek shelter at the wonderfully air conditioned mall. Although it did provide Sarah with a pretty summer dress, it provided little else in the way of entertainment. Solution: eat more food at Dinosaur BBQ! Sans appetites, the band went on to the Ohm Lounge where we were scheduled to unleash our music upon the unsuspecting masses. Three hours, two sets, twenty pounds lighter - the end result being that we were asked to play the next Woodstock (didn't that already happen twice?).
Finally, Rochester, NY - home to Genesee beer, Steve Gadd, the Kodak company and most importantly the Versprille residence. Our show that night was at the Boulder Coffee Company and it was (guess what?) HOT. Three clubs in three nights without air conditioning on the hottest weekend in recent memory. We sweat like donkeys in heat and sounded pretty much the same (you can infer what that means on your own time). Other than the club, not much can be remembered about the area except two lovely hosts and mounds of steak (there is a blurry vision in there somewhere of Dion lying on the floor doing a body wave in the middle of a massive after-show dance party, too). It was an awesome finish to the first of four crazy 4-day weekends in the month of June. Now that we're back in New York City we have three days to recoup and we start it all over again. See you real soon!
-Pat and the rest of the JDB

I can't remember every detail from last night. I think my ears are still ringing - not from the band, but from the damn audience! WOO. That is a cool feeling. I really just want to record the audience screaming - that is some motivational listening if I've ever heard it. The Bitter End is cool. It is my home and it has become my band's home. I waltz in whenever - what's the guy at the door's name? The really big guy? He is awesome and has such a great vibe. He gets excited and hugs me so tight and then slaps my fucking back so hard that I feel pain, but it's all good because he feels and loves the music. I guess that is my number one goal. When I walk out of there with smiles and hugs and the great energy between people, it is like NOTHING ELSE!!!! This is why I live. The show was planned perfectly (well we really don't plan shows, but I had a little cheat sheet). We came out and did the end of "Back Again", because I figured, let's come out and just ROCK THESE MO FO's. BTW, thanks for staying so late everyone - I KNOW the Bitter End owes us each a free drink for their unbelievable tardiness. "Makin my Livin"{ is part of a cool sound the band has going right now, with the laid back D'Angelo meets the Band meets HeeHaw Twang, and the fine fine guitar work of Mr.Hindman. It seems to work well at the top. The new, "Talkin hasn't done much for me Lately", is one you haven't heard much, but get ready. I think it is very catchy, funky, and I like the lyrics a lot. The response to that song killed me!!!! YEAH YES! Just wait till you hear the rest of our new songs! We continued on with "I need a woman", which has a tempo that the JDB has not yet explored - it's a groove that makes you do a slow walk that shuffles the feet in short, staccato steps. Next, the heartache is mixed with the colorful Motown grooves of "You should know". The only way I really tap into that song is when I find the heartache of a relationship gone wrong. If you can tap into that emotion, then you can sing this song properly. The lyrics have a soulfulness and a funkiness that make it hard to not groove and smile, but don't be fooled - this song is an acusation, and a cutting and slicing of heart strings! I just happens to build in color and emotion throughout the tune - I like it! "Take it as it comes" - we got to play all the new tunes - I remember writing a lot of that tune on the island of Menorca, under a dark cloudy night sky. That was how the song started. It's an anthem for a sunny day, and new way, etc - I think a lot of our songs are, but this one is special. "Trouble's hold, watch it fold, cause I let a boulder roll right off my back you know I let a boulder roll right off my back YOU KNOW!" I love the old metaphor of the mountain and the valley - life is so like that, and sometimes climbing that mountain can be so hard, you just want to give up. I'm not giving up and I encourage anyone to do the same! "Georgia Jane" was the jam last night - we turned it into a Blues Club for a brief moment. Dan can play the blues, boy oh boy. That tune is not too bombastic, but fills the "jam song" , let's groove thang! TAKE THE TIME and BIRDWALKER were new and amazing! I love playing those songs - I feel really connected with everyone of them! Just wanted to say great night to everyone! The bartenders and all the workers at the Bitter End rock. The whole vibe is cool, and.......let's play there until you can't walk in there anymore - then we'll know it's time. But for now, I'd like the ride this wave. There have been some great moments to remember, and with hope, there will br many many more! Have a great safe weekend everyone!!!!!!

Hello all...
First off, a huge thanks to all who made the Midwest jaunt a success, namely those from NJ who made the surreal (and pleasantly loud) apearance in Chicago...and to Cowboy Mouth for letting us strut our stuff as a full band in Indianapolis (their drummer/singer was sick and they opted for an acoustic set) Second off, we're getting some nice press as of late. In the photos section, you'll see some stuff from the latest issue of Drummer magazine (the UK's equivalent of Modern Drummer) which just blew our minds. We were all very proud of Josh and his performance at California's NAMM show, but this was a huge surprise! Also, we're featured in this month's RELIX magazine http://www.relix.com/cgi-bin/content_details.php?id=1774 (Frank Zappa on the cover) as one of 5 new bands to look out for. Watch out kids, we're fired up and ready to do it! Your support has been amazing and we thank you whole-heartedly. Keep an eye on our schedule...we will continue to hit every city/country thats willing to have us...PEACE!
