This is a press release that I just received about Tammy Grimes!

for immediate release to the press /bigger>/color> /bigger>/fontfamily>September 14, 2006 • Contact: Tammy S. Grimes • founder, Dogs Deserve Better www.dogsdeservebetter.org • P.O. Box 23, Tipton, PA 16684 • 1.877.636.1408 • 814.941.7447
Dogs Deserve Better Founder Arrested for Helping Dying Chained Dog/x-tad-bigger>/color> Shocking Video Footage of Doogie Suffering and Unable to Stand Being Viewed Nationwide on You Tube /x-tad-smaller>/bigger>/fontfamily>/center> /x-tad-smaller>/fontfamily>/center>Altoona, PA—Tammy Grimes, founder of Dogs Deserve Better, was arrested Monday, September 11, 2006, for helping a dying chained dog she dubbed Doogie in East Freedom, Pennsylvania. Grimes organization was called with frantic pleas for help by a neighbor and another concerned citizen who alerted them to his plight.
/x-tad-smaller>Kim Eicher, the neighbor, stated that Doogie had been unable to stand since Saturday, and she had gotten no response from the local humane society after calling all weekend. Grimes instructed her to call again, leaving a detailed message. When Ms. Eicher had gotten no response by noon, Grimes team went out to see if they could help Doogie.
Grimes, upon seeing Doogie from the road, initially felt he had already died, as he was lying with his back to the road and was not moving. Her team went to investigate, and found that he was still alive, but was unable to stand, his legs flailing about in the mud and his own feces. She then documented his condition with video and photos, and—making the decision to put Doogie's welfare ahead of any fears of legal action—took him to a local veterinarian, getting him immediate and necessary care. She then took Doogie to her home, bathed him, gave him food and water, and made him comfortable.
She was later arrested for her refusal to return Doogie to a certain and immediate death on the end of a chain. She is now facing misdemeanor theft, receiving stolen property, criminal mischief, and criminal trespass charges.
Grimes states, "I will always be proud of what I did for Doogie. As Oprah says, there is one thing I know for sure: helping Doogie was the only morally right thing to do. The video has been placed on You Tube, and has received over 13,000 views in two days. People are astounded and outraged that we live in a society where those who help suffering animals are arrested, and those who abuse them are not punished. I am calling for my immediate release from all charges, and for the Arnolds to instead be charged with abuse—based on video and photo evidence, the testimony of a neighbor and another citizen, and the testimony of the veterinarian. I am asking all concerned citizens to stand with me against this atrocity. Speak out, do not let the press and local authorities railroad me while the Arnolds get away with this abuse. Please visit the website at http://www.dogsdeservebetter.org/doogie.html. View the video. You will understand why I had to stand up for Doogie; he could not stand up for himself."

How Safe is your Home?

Many of us pet owners are not aware of some of the basic dangers to our pets in our homes.
Our nightmare: It was Easter Sunday, when my wife and I came home to green spots on the carpet. After further investigation it appeared to be vomit. Since the dog was in his cage we knew it must have been the cats. But at the time we couldn't tell which of our two cats it was. So the next morning we were greeted with another green spot at our bedroom door way. Again, not knowing which cat it came from.
So then I remembered the words of Dr. Jim Richards of Cornell University. "Subtle changes in behavior can be the early warning signs that something is wrong with your kitty." As you all know cats are not the easiest animals to diagnose. From this we were able to notice that Sassy our female cat was not as wild over her favorite food, and we also noticed that she wasn't sunbathing as much as before.
These signs, though very subtle, were all we needed. So we started to look around the house for something "green" that Sassy might have eaten to make her sick. It didn't take long before I was face to face with the Easter lily that I had my wife as an Easter gift. The plant had the tell tail sign of having been eaten.
At the time not knowing exactly how dangerous Lilies can be, I had my wife rush Sassy to the vet. Good thing we did too. Sassy's kidneys were shutting down. Turns out that all Lilies are very toxic to Cats.
The end of the story is that, Sassy is alive and well. She is back to her old habits of gorging on her favorite food, and sunbathing till the sun goes down (or until her silly human closes the blinds). The vet had to flush her system out, and because we were quick to notice the change in behavior the toxins had not spread through her body.
We all love a happy ending. What is your worst pet in the home nightmare? Feel free to comment on this article.

Second Chance for Donut

Recently a relative of mine got a new puppy. Which I was very excited about, because I feel that having a pet especially a dog is fundamental in childhood development. They found a puppy named Donut at their local shelter. He is a Jack Russell Terrier/Pit Mix. The shelter told them that this breed was good with children. Now this perplexed me, and I was concerned. Not concerned about the pit half, but the Jack half. Especially since in their house hold they had a one of each childhood stage, that is a 1 year old, a 2 year old, a 3 year hold, and 4 year old.
They visited my home several times, each time bringing Donut with them. Donut was an angel. At least when he was in my house. But once he got home, he, as my relative put it, was a "holly terror". So I offered to take the puppy. They were reluctant, but a few weeks later the call came.
"Come and get this dog!" So with out delay I arranged for my dad, who loved the chance to see the grandbabies anyway, to drive there and bring Donut to his new home.
Once Donut got adjusted to his new home, and was reunited with his friend, "Ringo" my shepherd mix, he was good as gold. He is a very well behaved puppy, in fact he takes to training very quickly. So why the behavior difference? Was it the competition with the children in my relatives house? Or was it just a personality conflict between owner and pup? Well until we can learn to speak dog we will never truly know. But I do know one thing for sure, Donut is very happy in his new home. (As he sits at my feet looking up at me as if he knows that I'm writing about him.
So what do you think? Feel free to comment on this article.

Do you have a Pampered Pet?
There are many different ways of pampering an your pet. Some people use fancy clothes, or themed dog beds. Those types of things are fine, I have nothing against them. But in my case I treat my dogs like children. Therefore one of the greatest ways I pamper them is to give them Quality time. Dogs, I feel are the one pet that are closest to being like people. So when it comes to pampering, I find ways of giving them exactly what they want. And the one thing they want more than treats, toys, and food, is to be with people, more specifically that one person that they know as Owner. ( Or in my case they know me as Daddy).
First. I specifically designated spots around the house where I work and relax, that they too, can comfortably stay with me. Next in between making time for my wife and son, I also make time to spend with my dogs in some form of activity that they enjoy like playing Frisbee or just going for a long walk down to the water. Living close to the Barnegat Bay, here in Central New Jersey, makes for a nice walk and great scenery. Now, that is just how I pamper my dogs. Here are some ways that other people do it. This is my Top 5 Pet Pampers!
1. One that really stands out in my memory, especial with summertime here, is giving your dog his own swimming pool. One Dog, One Bone, makes a cute and functional dog bone shaped pool. The link below is to an article about them. http://www.allpetsradio.com/article.php?id=174
2. This one is fun, and can be coordinated with your homes décor. Pet Paris offers a wide selection of doggy beds that just scream pampered pet!
