i recently came upon lots and lots of new music while sailing the wide, wide seas (seeing as how im a fisherman and all) and have been over loading my brain with this newly acquired music. as a way of processing, starting today, i will continue to update this specific blog with the list and maybe some notes about the records i heard if i found them particularly this or that. this is just my opinion. if you disagree, totally comment. if you want to recommned something, totally comment. if you hate me...well...enjoy.
vincent gallo - recordings of music for film (ambient. decent.)
throbbing gristle - first annual report (pretty good. the first track is creepy. just imagine suicide's "frankie teardrop" but with real instruments instead of keyboards)
soft boys - underwater moonlight (pretty good. some songs catchier than others. robyn hitchcock is weird, but entertaining)
will oldham - joya (eh. bonnie 'prince' billy is wayyy better. some good tracks though. #2, #11)
simply saucer - cyborgs revisited (crazy. listen to this if you like the stooges and the velvet underground.)
skip spencer - oar
durutti column - the return of the durutti column (actually good. its an instrumental album produced by the same guy that produced new order/happy mondays. vini reilly plays guitar. if you like factory records, listen to this)
dirty three - ocean songs (dirty three fucking rock. jim white is an amazing drummer. but if you are paying close attention, they can get a little boring. good "im feeling kinda down, but i got shit to do" music.)
arab strap - monday at the hug and pint (couldn't understand half of what he said the first time through. but there was talking of sex and self deprecating. mmm mmm)
bauhaus - the sky's gone out (wow...horrible.)
dub narcotic sound system - out of your mind (boring. i wanted to like it. but it was just boring)
the faint - danse macabre (jesus...really?)
idaho - hearts of palm (pretty good. reminded me of bedhead and i liked that. these guys love the sound of fingers scrapping on strings. probably the most prominent sound of the whole album. still good though)
neu! - neu! 75 (oh my god! these guys are amazing. what took me so long! i need to re-evaluate my distaste for "krautrock" because these guys rule and so does kraftwerk and so does popul vuh (in small doses). the first half of the album is better than the second half. but still.)
seabear - singing arc EP (this is good. mellow. sounds pretty. kind of like sigur ros sometimes (they are both icelandic) but with vocals that dont get annoying and more acoustic guitar, which i love. ignorable at times. still good.)
arcade fire - neon bible (not as good as funeral obviously. a little too epic sounding. and wynn is really holding back is vocals. not to mention the song "no cars go" was on one of their earliest EPs. still i appreciate the effort.)
pete bjorn and john (who the deuce is john...anyway, i hated this at first but i think i kinda like it. i think the girl talk remix of "lets call it off" is much better but i may be a little bias with my love of girl talk. its like 60s pop but with a interesting european twist.)
brian eno - taking tiger mountain by strategy (eno is pretty cool. i still have mixed feelings about alot of his stuff. this is no another green world, but still pretty good. i hate his voice.)
the birthday party - hee-haw (god i love nick cave. this really isnt very good. its their first EP with a bunch of other early recordings. "mr.clarinet" was probably my favorite song. its like listening to velvet underground and the stooges but sped up.)
his name is alive - home is in your head (i really wanted to like this but it was pretty bad. short songs are cool with substance not when they are just random shit. try again.)
nico - desert shore (nothing beats chelsea girls. nothing. this is very interesting. john cale shows his love for pressing pop music into experimental and classical influences. nico has a really pretty voice in my opinion so though this wasnt great, it was interesting none the less.)
final fantasy - has a good home (this is okay. a couple of the songs are catchy. for violin, i would much rather listen to andrew bird. is this guy from canada because i think he said canada and montreal like 500 times. decent. little long winded.)
the replacements - let it be (jesus christ. reading about these guys is depressing. bunch of drunks. you can tell in the music. its all yelling and scraping guitars. i fucking hate college rock. better than the minutemen (anything is), stupid lyrics (you cant say "boner" in a song. sorry) = why did i want to like this band for so long. blech)
sonic youth - goo (man, i really want to like sonic youth. i mean, besides daydream nation. this is the follow up. as usal, the musc is interesting meaning the guitar work is. drums seem to have a hard time fitting. and the lyrics! oh my!! "my friend goo says PU!" i sometimes wonder if i would like them more without any lyrics. i think yes. basically. usally sonic youth. some songs are cool and some are just rambly and cryptic. there is a song about eating disorders which is pretty good.)
his name is alive - stars on e.s.p (a guy at work came to my cube and recommended i listen to this. its ok. the guy basically rips off the beach boys/60s pop all over the place. lots of mantras about metaphysical blah blah. "i cant live at home in this world anymore." shit like that. i think it was better than home is in your head, just because there were real songs. still. these guys are better on paper than in practice.)
