On a lighter note - here is a collection of images from a recent rafting trip down the River of No Return - the Main Stem of the Salmon River. The full gallery can be accessed here River of No Return Image Gallery While I ended up not taking nearly as many photo's as I had thought I would and relying way to much on the Pentax W10 point and shoot, I managed to get some pictures that I liked, even if they are not destined to be printed at 20x30 and framed under archival glass...

Category: Jobs, Work, Careers

The day dawns with a desire (and opportunity) for a career change. If you are a Seattle area employer and are looking for an intelligent, ethical, self-starting, organic learner, with a broad and diverse skill set, look no further.

After almost 20 years in the biotech industry it is time for new challenges. As my previous employer closed down its Seattle based office and I had no desire to move to the Bay Area I have found myself for the first time in my professional career, without a job. Given this opportunity for change I would like to explore the possibility of beginning a new career or exploring new fields. My achievements in biotech included working as a chemist as part of a team that discovered a a new antitubercular agent  (currently in Phase I trials); a patent for the invention of automated medicinal chemistry synthesis equipment that resulted in the first commercial income for our biotech start-up; and was capped by a successful transition out of the laboratory to middle management where I spent seven years working in business development supporting R&D at both a mid-sized and later a global biotech company. As business development in biotech requires a broad mix of skills including: negotiation, contract and market analysis, competitive intelligence, relationship building, and technical sales (with some intellectual property work tossed in for good measure) I have gathered quite a broad basket of business skills to add to my  experience at the bench.. In addition to biotech my interests include the high-tech world and while lacking in formal certification, I have a strong understanding of MS Office applications, computers, networks, databases, and the basics of programming. Over the last year I have spent large amounts of time scratching a photography itch including learning advanced post-processing techniques in Photoshop CS2, as well as earning some income as a photographer. While I have not yet taken the time to assemble a formal portfolio of my photographic work as my rate of improvement is still such that I want to redo my earlier work, there are no shortage of images to wade through on my web site www.troutstreaming.com to catch a flavor of my work. While not at work or attending my daughter's sporting events, I prefer to spend my time in the outdoors, these days mostly fly fishing which includes spending time at the oars on whitewater rivers. My formal education includes a BA from Northwestern University in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Cell Biology with some additional training in economic decision making and negotiation practices.

On the intangible side my guiding principles, regardless of job description have always been the same: do work that matters - find positions where my work product contributes to the success of the project and company and where such achievements are recognized; treat others as you want to be treated with a strong 'do not be a hypocrite 'rider - earn the respect of my peers not only through my achievements, but in the manner that they are accomplished; and finally, always be learning - do work that challenges my capabilities and expands my skills and knowledge. I have a long history of learning by doing and successfully applying these new skills in an ever growing and changing industry. I have demonstrated that I can work successfully as part of a team as well as having the ability to work remotely on independent projects. I have always received positive feedback from my supervisors, internal, and external customers and am constantly striving to improve myself.

If you are an employer in the Seattle area that looks for these attributes in your employees, please contact me so that we can discuss the opportunity further.

Looking forward to new challenges,
