For the first time on CD ever, the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band's "PIMP" is featured on a compilation from French Radio Nova.

The sampler features other contemporary funk greats such as the Menahan Street Band and Naomi Shelton (both from Daptone), Quantic & Mulatu Astatke plus some charming sounds we have never heard before.

This album is especially recommended if you are into a broader variety of musical genres and styles!

Mocambo Records has signed a label deal with CCRE for the Japanese release of the Gizelle Smith & the Mighty Mocambos album.

While the vinyl edition will be available as export from Mocambo Records, we are very happy to have found a strong partner for an exclusive Japan CD edition.

The CCRE version will feature three bonus tracks: the vocal version of Free Vibes, an instrumental of Working Woman plus an exclusive RMX of "The Time Is Right For Love" by Tokyo-based producer SWING-O aka 45.
Further extras are a detailed biography of the artist and the lyrics of all songs in both Japanese and English in the booklet.

The official release date is October 7th, 2009.

The CDs are available in Japan through:
Tower Records Japan
HMV Japan
Amazon Japan

All infos and updates can be found on our Japanese website.

Our friends in Finland run a monthly rare soul and raw funk club night called Soul Seed in the old capital (get the hint?) of the country, Turku.

One of the allnighter's all time favourites is the Bobby Reed ballad "The Time Is Right For Love", released on Bell. This great piece of soul is usually played at the highlight of the party. Rightly so.

To celebrate the anniversary of the rare soul night, Soul Seed decided to give a present to their club members and surprise them with a new interpretation, this time sung by a female singer.

When we were asked to do a version with Gizelle, we were more than happy to do the song in our own style with a more uptempo twist. To make things even better, we extended the song to include a semi-instrumental version with the funky flute from French Aldo Guinart taking over the lead vocals on the flip side.

The master was cut with the new machine of our friends from Timmion and eventually issued as giveaway-7inches for club members only.

During the work-in-progress, someone noticed a small mistake in the label design, nobody had realised before: Gizelle's name had been misprinted as "Gizella" on the initial label print. A couple of labels had already been produced before we could change the production, so we mutually agreed on using the "false" labels for private purpose.

While the Soul Seed club records now carry the artist first name as it is spelled in Ms Smith's birth certificate, there is a small amount of 45s with the name "Gizella Smith" that we will sell on the Mighty Mocambos tour and give to a handful of selected shops.

We rarely deal with musical categories, but with a singer from Northern England, a band from North Germany and a label from Scandinavia, we think it is appropriate to call this a NORTHERN SOUL tune.

We also hope you enjoy the tune in your favourite soul club soon, or on your home stereo from the Gizelle Smith & the Mighty Mocambos album.

The instrumental can be heard on our My Space player.
...and as they say at Daptone: "Singles are for couples too".

Japanese CCRE label releases a wonderful Funk compilation.

It features tracks by British acts such as Baby Charles & the New Mastersounds, but even more pleasant - three tunes that have been released on Mocambo(-produced) 45s.

Nowhere missing these days when it comes to serious funk are of course Gizelle's furious "Working Woman" and Mocambo's "The Next Message" (this time the flip side dub version from the original Peace Street 45) .

Soul Sugar's first ever 45 (Mocambo 45-1018), "Ritual",  is featured here too.

Did I mention we takin over this year?

Enjoy

While banging out a an full-length album with Gizelle Smith (more infos soooon), we still found time to travel the wide world of funk.

Our musical journey already  took us to New York, Detroit, Trinidad & Tobago, Kenya - next up is India.

Producer/DJ/musician & sitar genius Paikan from Toulouse debuted on Jazzman Records earlier this year with the brilliant "Dancefloor Fight" EP that features downright funky tunes all lead by his wonderful sitar work.

Earlier this summer, Paikan & the Mocambos cut a cool little track called "Ballad of the Bombay Sapphires" - which combines the rootsy slow funk of Mocambo with Paikans Indian-flavoured Sitar grooves, topped with Aldo Guinart's funky flute.
Check it out in our player now!
The song is going to be released in a couple of weeks on the new "Club Tikka" compilation courtesy of Légère Recordings .

Yippiee!

MOCAMBO RECORDS  - CINEMATIC FUNK - MLP 1002
Limited Edition – Vinyl Only Album
Release date: 26.6.2009

Mocambo is notorious for their killer Funk 45s that have become a favourite of prestigious DJs, ambitious collectors and music lovers worldwide. While the first label compilation sported the highlights of their first, sold-out vinyl 7“ releases, this sampler is a fine selection of new & previously unreleased material. Most of the tracks were originally composed for use in movie and television film sores and not for commercial release. Mocambo is very proud to offer these gems to connaisseurs and true vinyl lovers.

As the title „Cinematic Funk“ suggests, the music has more to it than just the usual 45 sound. From the grand opening theme, to quirky, break-heavy street soul, sweet love themes, moody downtempo jazz, psychedelic B-movie sitar grooves, chilled and spaced out tunes to blaxploitation car chase sceneries, the cream of Europe’s funk bands like James Taylor Quartet, Speedometer, Sound Stylistics, Delta Rhythm Section and the Mighty Mocambos deliver a broad variety of film-inspired funk styles.

Sit back, relax, listen to these hip sounds and create your own movie in your head to the score of Mocambo’s CINEMATIC FUNK.

The album’s artwork is free of rubbish like barcodes or web-/email-addresses.

These are the breaks!

Will be officially dropped on 30.6.

Kenny Dope re-worked Gizelle's "Working Woman". The 45 features a re-edit of the vocal version plus the instrumental of the same version.
The record is manufactured in Brooklyn, NY, sounds real phat and comes with in a tasteful picture sleeve.

Stay tuned as we will keep putting out 45s regularly!

Peace,
Mocambo

You lucky beatnuts...
As if two versions weren't enough, here come two more! Kenny Dope worked the hell out of our multitracks and re-edited/mixed a 45 of fresh versions of "Next Message".
The remixes are available on Kay Dee Records 45 KD-19 and we are very pleased to say that it is a very loud US made 7inch single.
Stay tuned while we record more hits.
Peace, Mocambo

Time for a little celebration - our 20th 7inch vinyl record is here!
Although we are still waiting for nrs. 12,15,17 & 19 to be manufactured, we decided to make this one extra glamorous and ordered a golden label. In fact it looks more like sausage brown, carhartt green or dirty bronze, but who cares?
The music on it is bloody great.

I could not tell any better than Hank Dettweiler who wrote this press release note:

"After the hard-hitting "Working Woman" on Old Capital, Gizelle & Mocambo step up with a soulful double-sider on their own imprint. "Snake Charmer" is  a mysteriously beautiful piece of psychedelic-dance-party soul featuring tremolo guitar, electric sitar, organ, theremin and of course Ms. Smith's incredibly charming vocals. While many of today's soul bands sound just slightly dated, the "Golden Girl of Funk" and her sisters take the game one step further and go completely "Out Of Fashion" on the flipside with some gospel-tinged, down-home funk that sends you way back to an era when R&B was still Rhythm & Blues, not Rubbish & Bling."
