Last night was the first TAKEOVER @ BOX gig, launching with the AMERICANA TAKEOVER. We hope it will be the first of many, with POP, ROCK, BLUES, ACOUSTIC and ELECTRO TAKEOVERs all happening in july.

Beginning the AMERICANA TAKEOVER was Terry Balfour. Formerly of the ever-popular 'Jocasta Sleeps' who have been tearing it up round Glasgow for the last however long, Terry has broken away to pursue his own personal ambitions.

Terry didn't disappoint. He has a powerful voice, with a clarity and control i wasn't expecting, which cut through the noise of the bar. He also possesses a genuine warmth that comes across on stage. His lyrics reflect events and feelings that he seems to have experienced first hand. It's irrelevant that his performance was his first since his catalytic final gig with Jocasta, because he wasn't great 'considering'....he was just great.

Next up was Oreste Gargaro. Don't be put off by the fact that that his name looks like he 'leaned on a typewriter' (as the man himself says); it sounds like it looks; and he's not actually a hairy, slick-haired, italian lothario. He is in fact another very talented songwriter and guitarist. With this rare foray into the land of live gigging, Oreste's performance of truly personal songs and an endearing vocal delivery has secured him a place on my booking wishlist.

Heading up the acoustic performances, was the well-respected and, quite frankly, scarily good Paul Malcolm. Paul has been a successful and sought after session musician for a number of years and writes songs with a strong americana sound. The fact that his love of music begins and ends with stringed wood is evident in the instrumental parts of his songs. However I didnt ever feel like the guitar finger picky bits overwhelmed the songs. And likewise it seemed there was just the right amount of carefully crafted (though according to him, not always remembered!) lyrics. Another outstanding performance from a musician who should be spending much more time under the hot lights.

Ending the night was The Invisible Republic. With rich, beautifully arranged harmonies, drumming that went from intricate to epic between one song and another, twangy guitars and ambient pedal steel, the final result of this band's efforts are quite something. While it wouldn't seem strange to see an army of line-dancers shuffling around to this bands americana/country stylings, they have a contemporary feel to their music that makes it accessible to even the most reluctant of listeners. Not only accessible but inviting. They even made me dance a little.

The next TAKEOVER gig is on July 1st. The POP TAKEOVER is expected to be a belter and will feature Louise Against The Elements, The Random Guy, Only Living Boys, Jonathan Carr and Kate Dunn. Free entry as always!

Box has for the second year running been selected as Glasgows only Red Stripe Music Award Venue!

Are you an unsigned band or artist? If so, then sign up for The Red Stripe Music Award 2009 now and have your chance to play at one of the country's best loved live music venues at a date between January and April next year.

If you're lucky enough to be picked and you prove to be a storm on the night you might even end up entertaining a raucous crowd at London's Kentish Town Forum at the final in May, where four bands will play for a chance to become Red Stripe Music Award Winner 2009 and secure a slot at three of next summer's favourite festivals as well as an opportunity to record and release your first single.

The gig series is open to all bands playing any manner of music, completely and utterly unbiased to trend or leaning. As a grassroots event, Red Stripe asks only that you're over 18 years old and put your heart and soul into every performance with original tracks that deserve to be exposed.

This year the Red Stripe Music Award will be supported by Fender, The Fly Magazine, Best Before Records and Merc clothing.

To enter your band into the Glasgow leg of the Music Awards then please go to  www.redstripe.net  to enter.

Good Luck!

!!! THE BENEFITS OF PLAYING AT BOX !!!
Please remember all bands have the opportunity to play 'The Next Big Thing @ Carling Academy Glasgow, Moshulu Aberdeen and The Picture House Edinburgh' and 'Box Stage - Live @ Loch Lomond' so play a good gig, bring a good crowd and buy the sound guy a pint!!!

The Holloways came... they played, they caused chaos... here's the scoop

"...There's two new words that have been added to Glasgow's vocabulary in 2007. First is 'Inboxicated' - the fine art of enjoying a late night drink in Box. Which i did last night. The second is a 'Twang-over' - a nasty, sickly feeling you get after a night out with a band. Which I am experiencing right now. As a result of drinking, singing, dancing, Djing and generally hanging out with The Holloways (I also spent a considerable amount of time calling each of them the wrong name, but we'll forget that bit!)

The atmosphere was electric as the buzz went around the bar that the Holloways were not just going to be doing a wee DJ set at their aftershow - they were actually gonna get up on stage and do another set. These gueriila style gigs are a specialty of the band and the fact they are loving it as much as the crowd adds to an already simmering occassion. At one point I thought Box was going to explode.

The set was a treat for anyone with a copy of "So This Is Great Britain?" and a great advert for anyone who doesn't. The show started with the singles 'Dancefloor' and 'Two Left Feet' ,and the brilliant 'Fit For A Fortnight' sounded superb. I'm sure the sound engineer hadn't planned on wiring up a fiddle when he came to work that night. A cheeky cover of Whigfield's 'Saturday Night' got everyone dancing and then, the finale. 'Generator'. My single of 2006 getting a re-release in 2007 and you wonder if it's ever been played like that before - with 3 Holloways atop the bar and the drummer (with his less portable instrument) standing, hitting his kit into next week.

It's gigs like this that make you realise why you love music. Unplanned and unadulterated. My mate Jimmy text me saying "This is history, right here"... and it was. The band made the crowd feel special - and as they left the stage, you realise that there is something incredibly special about the band too..." - FRASER THOMSON - XFM

AMAZING, YOU NEVER KNOW WHO YOU'LL SEE ONSTAGE OR THE BAR!!

BOX ONCE AGAIN LEADING THE WAY IN NEW MUSIC
