Thomas Jefferson was a Christian. At least, that is what senator John McCain suggested when he made his controversial "Christian Nation" statement recently: "I just have to say in all candor that since this nation was founded primarily on Christian principles, personally, I prefer someone who has a grounding in my faith,". In fact, Thomas Jefferson was Deist - NOT a Christian. Neither was Benjamin Franklin a Christian, he was a fairly devout Humanist if I remember my High School history lessons correctly. What is a Humanist? It is a polite way of saying "Atheist." McCain went on to say "I would probably have to say yes, that the Constitution established the United States of America as a Christian nation," when asked about his opinion on a recent poll that concluded 55 percent of Americans believe the U.S. Constitution establishes a Christian nation [CNN.com]...

This deserves a big, unrelenting, unprofessional WHAT THE FUCK!?

Is the GOP turning into the American Taliban? Have any of the conservative individuals in our country even read the US Constitution? Considering their horrible logistics skills, evident in their party's constant use of narrow-minded fallacious arguments and propaganda (turn on your television and just listen as the non-sequitur, straw man, and ad hominem arguments flow from the mouths of politicians) it appears the primary candidates slept through their US History classes - that is, if they attended class at all. The word "God" appears nowhere, and I repeat nowhere in our constitution. Go ahead, read it. And, read it again. It simply states how or government works, a little of why it works that way, how we can alter it, and our rights as citizens. Needless to say, these are things we should all devote to memory.

Where are these Christian principles that our leaders say our country was founded on? The old testament is one of the most violent displays of misogyny and bigotry in human literature. Pick a book from the old testament and you are sure to stumble across women and children being belittled, sacrificed in the name of God, and given no power while Palestinians and small tribes are murdered and pushed out of their homeland by the belligerent Israelites. Besides, if Jesus knew that white men were adopting Jewish principles and taking his words out of their historic context he'd be spinning in his empty grave. Read through every chapter of the Bible and study a little bit about ancient history and you'll see what I mean.

Ironically, this kind of fundamental idealism is exactly what our nation's founders were trying to get away from. After all, they did think up a nice little ammendment in the bill of rights not only separating the church from the state, but also giving us the power to practice whatever faith we choose - or none at all. Yet, whenever I read a bio of any random politician (from a news source as liberal as CNN), not only am I given his or her party, hometown, and date of birth but his religion as well... even down to the church he attends, as in the case of Barrack Obama. Where is that "separation"?When I go to the polls I'm not going to ask myself "Do I really want to vote for this guy? He may not believe in speaking in tongues, or maybe he still believes in Purgatory," I am going to ask myself "What will he or she do for healthcare? What is his stance on the war? Will he reverse Bush's Tax Cuts? Where does he stand on Women's and Gay's rights?." I could give two shits about the church he or she goes to, or if he goes at all. I just want a candidate in office that will change things the way I feel they need to be changed. No more, no less.

[For the record, I was not raised by an atheist family. I was brought up with strict, far from moderate, Pentecostal values. Strangely, this is why I will never vote for a Christian republican. End Rant.] - Jonah

I Support a Single Payer Healthcare System

With that said, I am going to direct you in the direction of an article that will answer the question some of you are asking: What is a Single Payer System [click it]? Before you ignore this I am going to make a very frank statement. If by chance you read this article and act on it, you can truthfully say that if you become gravely ill and can not afford it and are forced into debt for the rest of you natural born life, that it is the Government's fault and that said government should be responsible for the well-being of its people (we are a "Democracy", you know -- a government for the people, by the people). However, if you ignore this, you are either stating that you accept the responsibility to keep yourself healthy and can afford to pay the incredible sums of money it can take to keep yourself alive; or you are a completely apathetic political asshole and can blame your misfortune on no one but yourself. Harsh? I said I was going to be frank.

A Single Payer System benefits everyone, but most specifically the middle class American. Yes, that is probably where you stand as a citizen. Middle class. Exciting isn't it? Because you are neither poor nor wealthy you receive little support. No tax cuts, and no Healthcare. Want to find out more? Click  here to visit pnhp.org (Physicians for a National Healthcare Program). Neither of our country's two main political  parties supports this idea, though it has been proven successful in both Canada and France. However, the Green Party does. Of course this is a third party, but both sides of the current administration are too damn capitalist to make the necessary humanitarian efforts that need to be made. As citizens we owe it to ourselves to try and change authoritarian direction in which our government is going. If small groups of people can free slaves, gain women's suffrage, and demand civil rights why aren't we fighting for equal health coverage. We are Human beings. Living is a right, not a duty. We shouldn't have to pay independent corporations for our lives, while our government sits back and watches us grow frail and die.
