Current mood:  determined
This month has been a month that has had alot of changes behind the scenes with RKP.
The venue we have been working with for over a year as an 18+ venue has had some problems with the town of West Warwick and complaints from neighbors of noise after hours and possible under age drinking.  Of course we cannot account for all the shows that go on at Blaze's, but I know for a fact that all the RKP shows have been run well and that the fans and the bands were respectfull to the neighborhood and the drinking age.  With 2 HUGE shows in Oct and Dec over there at Blaze's, it seemed that all was lost again with another venue....however, Me and Miked personally went there this past Friday to scope out the joint and see how the changes would effect the shows.  There were def under 21 people present in the club.  As long as the police officer (who arrives around 9:30pm) does not see a problem, which he did not, then everyone was allowed to stay. So the show on the 30th will go on as scheduled.  Bands will have tickets, so please buy them from the bands, they make the money.  Doors will now be at 7pm, the show will start by 8pm, and we ask that if you are under 21, that you come early and plan on staying in the building.
Atomik karma- we are revamping our internet radio show.   We will be announcing a new bi-weekly time for this show, and will be scheduling guests again in the next few weeks.  You can submit music for Atomik Karma by sending your MP3 or MP4 to rockkarmapromotions@hotmail.com  Atomik Karma has gotten alot bigger over the past year and we are looking to syndicate it out to other internet radio sources.
New T-shirts!!!  Today, in just one hour I will be going over to the design guru's house to design the new RKP shirts!  Back by popular demand...they will be BLACK!  They have been thought over for a long time and an idea that is nearly 2 years old will finally come to print!  Please look for them to be up and for sale at both the 30th and 31st halloween shows!
Personal note:  As you know, Rock Karma is an ever changing entity that started about 6 years ago after I wanted to see a community thrive once again with the heart of it being local metal.  I am very proud to be friends with the bands in this community.  I believe we are a thriving force as a team.  Music is the most important entitiy, followed by the knowledge that the music feeds the soul and brings us together as one.  Although we are always changing personally as we go through life, having this one thing centers us and gives us a sense of belonging.  No matter how shitty, or how amazing everything is, there is a show with quality bands and amazing friends that is waiting for us.  A place to be, a place to belong.  This is why we move forward, and try to keep up with the changes even when sometimes it feels impossible.  Because in the long run, this is the time of our lives and the people we will remember as our not only friends, but family.

So we had an epic battle on Saturday night with like 150 people in attendance at the New Wave Cafe.  So much Talent in one place, I don't think a finer show could have been going on anywhere!
Bands were judged in 4 categories.  Overall Performance, Stage Presence, Crowd Interaction, and Music Composition.  There was a scale of 1-10 for each category with a total of 40 points possible from each of the 3 judges.  In addition, each person who came to the show voted for their favorite band of the night.  Each vote was worth 1 point.  Here are the results:
102 points- For The Betrayed
123 points- Dragged Under
129 points- In The Flesh
136 points- Eddie and the Louvers
146 points- Vega

It was so close, but VEGA came out on top!  They won 100 free t-shirts from Cypress Screenprinting, Buttons from Just Buttons, 100 shots from Kellingsen Photography, 10 hours of studio time from Feedback Studio, and $1,000 cash from The New Wave Cafe to be presented on stage at Rockfest where they will be playing at 7pm on Aug 7th!

Rock Karma would like to thank all the sponsors, the New Wave Cafe, and all the bands who played from Jan 3rd till last sat!  We helped the New Wave with this venture this year to get new bands into the venue and let them see what an amazing home bass the new wave is for local music!  So keep supporting each other and your local bars that have local music!  See you at a show soon!

What another amazing battle at the New Wave Cafe Saturday night!  First on was Dragged Under.  They showed up 15 minutes before their set time, with no bass player (the bass player was singing) and still pulled off second place!  I think that the respect of the other bands and their fans for what this bands has recently been through is partially to blame.  Anyway, can't say this enough.... find a new bass player boys, your singer should be Cleaver!   Next up was New Ditty. The is a house favorite, all the bartenders were wearing their ND T-shirts and singing along to every song!  The other bands competing made mention of the lead singer having "the best vocals in local music".  Next up was Chaos Before Creation.  These boys meant business!  They def won the hearts of all who were listening with thier amazing metalness! Next up was Eddie and the Louvers....with a wide range of rock and metal fans in the room, this punk band had it's work cut out for them, but it was NO contest!  They brought it like it had never been broughten before!  Beer was EVERYWHERE, and they did a cover of Runaround Sue that was amazing!  Def worth seeking out this band if you have never seen them!  Last, but certainly not least was Worm.  Another band of the punk persuation, they really stepped up their game since round 1!  They were prepped and ready for battle!

Although we announced everything at the end of the night, we wanted to send out an official email with all the results laid out.

Bands were scored by 3 judges (not rock karma or new wave cafe staff). Bands were being judged on Overall performance, stage presence, crowd interaction and music composition. There was a scale of 1-10 for each category for a possible total of 40 points per each judge. In addition, every person who came through the door received a ballot. The ballots were only valid if they contained 2 different band names for the night. The first place on the ballot was worth 3 points and the second place was worth 2 points. These were added up with the judges scoring and here are the results:

Worm- 106 points

New Ditty- 142 points

Chaos Before Creation- 172 points

Dragged Under- 182 points

Eddie and the Louvers- 243 points

Eddie and the Louvers and Dragged Under automatically move on the the Final round on June 20th. Joining them will be the top 2 bands from the May 23rd.  To get the 5th band for the final, we take the band with the most points that did not make it out of the 2 dates as a wild card. The 3rd place band for this round is Chaos Before Creation, they will be up against the 3rd place band from the May 23rd show.
Rock Karma thoroughly enjoyed ALL of the performances sat night and would like to personally thank every band, the New Wave Cafe and all of our sponsors, and judges!  Your votes are what determines the winners, so come out and support your favorite band for the next round!

Thank you!

We over here at RKP are very excited to announce that we have officially added a new member to the core group of our Krew.  Even as I type this, Mr Seven Rodi is undergoing initiation ceremonies and if he survives the laughing that ensues, he will be a full fledged RKP member!  Steven will be working on some new stuff for RKP including but not limited to Rock Karma TV, and on the street promotions, and other top secret stuff.
Steven is no stranger to local music.  As the former front man of This Is Us, he helped to create a new era and rebirth of local music that is widely referenced to as "the scene".  In addition he embodies the ethics we were founded on, that community and supporting each other is the path that leads to personal fullfilment.  We are all in this together, for love, for family, for community but most of all for music!

What another amazing battle at the New Wave Cafe tonight!  First on was For Solace.  This was my first time seeing them with their new line up.  They were tighter than ever and put on one hell of a set impressing all who watched.  Next up was Vega.  I can not even begin to tell you how unreal this band was, you will have to experience them in person to even know how unique and fresh they are (in a good way!) Next up was Scarecrow Hill. They had their Hill Dolls in attendence and threw down like nobody's business as only Scarecrow Hill can.  Last but certainly not least was Holloway.  They were full of energy and closed out the night with a bang!  They even gave into the crowd when the cliche "freebird" was yelled and gave everyone a couple of versus in their own style!

Although we announced everything at the end of the night, we wanted to send out an official email with all the results laid out.

These were added up with the judges scoring and here are the results:
Holloway- 153

For Solace- 180 points

Scarecrow Hill- 186 points

Vega- 232 Points

Vega and Scarecrow Hill automatically move on the the 2nd round on May 23rd. Joining them will be the top 2 bands from the Feb 28th show For The Betrayed and In The Flesh. To get the 5th band for round 2, we take the band with the most points that did not make it out of the 2 dates as a wild card.  As you may or may not remember (or can look up in last month's blog) Crimson Bile was in 3rd place at 179 points for the Feb 28th show.  So by 1 freakin vote....it's For Solace moving on to the May 23rd show with the other bands! A true testiment to every vote counts!
Rock Karma thoroughly enjoyed ALL of the performances last night and would like to personally thank every band, the New Wave Cafe and all of our sponsors, and judges!  A very special thanks to Rock Star energy drinks for their generous donations and presence tonight, and to Elm City Pins for driving all the way from East Haven Ct to be there tonight!

Thank you!

What an amazing battle at the New Wave Cafe last night!  First on was Crimson Bile, they did a great cover of my personal favorite Lincoln Park song "papercut" and it was good to finally see this band in person.  Next up was Clearview.  This band got the most props for having the tightest drummer of the evening.  Very professional and very well rehearsed.  Next up was For The Betrayed.  This is a fairly new addition to the local music scene and they did a great job bringing that old school hardcore sound to the NWC stage.  Next was In The Flesh, these boys were a 3 guitar powerhouse and really brought their A game.  Last but certainly not least was Wolves of Wysteria, they kept the crowd till the end of the night and really finished off the night strong.

Although we announced everything at the end of the night, we wanted to send out an official email with all the results laid out.

Wolves Of Wysteria- 154 points
Clearview- 166 points
Crimson Bile- 179 points
In The Flesh- 188 points
For The Betrayed- 204 points
In The Flesh and For The Betrayed automatically move on the the 2nd round on May 23rd. Joining them will be the top 2 bands from the March 28th show. To get the 5th band for round 2, the band with the most points that did not make it out of the 2 dates will advanced as a wild card.  We will have to wait until the show on March 28th to see who that is.

Alot of people have been inquiring about the New Wave Cafe 2009 Battle of the Bands.  This is a 21+ venue, band members need not be all 21 or older, but will need to sell a min of  20 tickets at $10 a piece to people who are.  We have the following slots available.
February 28th- 2 slots available
March 28th- 4 slots available

The New Wave Cafe 2009 Battle of the Bands Rules:

1. Bands must sell pre-sale tickets to participate in the BOTB's. With the exception of the Jan 3rd show, bands are asked to pre-sell at least 20 tickets @ $10. 20 will be provided, if you require more tickets, the money from the first 20 must be handed in before recieving additional tickets.
2. All unsold tickets and money for sold tickets are due AT LOAD IN DAY OF SHOW.
3. Ticket sales will NOT determine who moves forward or wins. They WILL, however, determine your set time. Set times will be chosen AT LOAD IN in the order of who sold the most tickets to who sold the least. Your band will choose a time out of the 5 slots.
4. Judging will be conducted as follows: Every person that walks through the door as a fan the day of show will be given a ballot with space for 2 bands. Each fan MUST vote for 2 bands or the ballot will not count. The first band choice slot will be worth 3 points the 2nd band choice is worth 2 points.
5. There will be anonymous judges in the audience. They will consist of sponsors and people who are not oriented personally with any of the bands. They will be judging you on overall performance, (stage presence, music composition, crowd interaction) Professionalism (from the first email, to load in, and any interaction you have with any of the staff of the New Wave, Rock Karma, the sound guy, etc).  There is a possibility of 40 total points from this.
6. There will be 4 first round shows with 5 bands each
7. 2 bands from each show will move onto semi finals. There will be 2 dates with 4 bands each for the semi finals.
8. 2 bands from each semi final will move onto the finals. The final battle will be heald in June with 4 bands. Basically, you have a 1 in 20 shot of winning.
9. Prizes will include but are not limited to the following: Studio time, a professional photo shoot with 100 frames from Kensington Photography, 100 free t-shirts (one color, one side), a guaranteed slot on rockfest playing the time of your choosing, and everybody's favorite prize....CASH!
10. Load in will be at 7:30pm the day of show, line up for the night will be chosen at that time. Bands will get 40 min sets.

What makes this botbs different than all the others? There are only 20 bands total, so you have a 1 in 20 chance of winning. You get a full set to play your music and impress the crowd and the judges. It is not he who sells the most tickets wins.....there is actual judging and every bands has a chance to win.
So let's make this an epic battle and show the rest of the BOTB organizer's in the area that quality is better than quantity!

So every other week we at RKP do this internet radio show called Atomik Karma.  It runs for 90 mins, goes out live, and then can be listened to anytime along with all the other fine radio shows at Downcitysignal.com.  We play all local music, from the CD's we gather up at shows and songs that are sent to us from local bands via email.  There is so much more we could be doing with this show and we need you to help!
If your band, or even part of your band is interested in being a guest on Atomik Karma, please just drop us a line here on myspace or at rockkarmapromotions@hotmail.com
You can also send any MP3's to the above email address and as long as they are all original, all local and of the hard-rock/metal variety, then we will play your song on the next show.
Time to move things forward into the future!
Lisa, RKP
