Should you decide to spend your music vouchers patriotically, this year also saw great releases from the ruby suns, SideKickNick, Luke Buda, The LEDs, Die!Die!Die!, Steve Abel, Eru Dangerspiel, and The Naked and Famous, but beware: there were also several over-hyped yet deadly dull local albums from the likes of Ddub, Ladyhawke, The Tutts and Streetwise Scarlet. –Grant Smithies, Sunday Start Times 28/12/8

A band that offers customised candy with entertainingly thematic intentions and branded with proclamations of self-love already put themselves ahead of 99% of the pack in creativity stakes. The fact that their music –the main product in this origami package of PR bliss – delivers and really pushes your preconceptions into the dirt puts this Christchurch trio in good stead. With brushes of Air’s sweeping orchestral approach and Bauhuas dry ice intensity, Billy Idol’s subtle glam edge and plunky basslines The Fall might claim as their own, they melt like chocolate. While it doesn’t move as much as some of their local peers, they have their own sound, and taste ! Not a lot of substance resides in the self-termed ‘pop-tronica’ band’s second album, but their steady pace, eerie synchronised voices, unpredicatable ryhtmic changes and electro bursts hint at more excitement further down the road. Still would fit well on a shelf with New Order, Glass Candy and Miami Vice soundtracks and would look more colourful.

Cd of the Week – The Press, 25/7/8
I’m still lovin’ Canterbury via Wellington electro act The L.E.D.s [Blair Parkes, Marcus Thomas, Dan Batkin-Smith and Helen Greenfield] because they’re loads of fun. They use programmed beats and a live drummer to create their distinctive brand of electro pop and Still is anything but stationary. Upbeat, high-energy electro meets Darth Vader in a blender. A nice touch is that track three is apparently dedicated to local music stores Galaxy Records and Real Groovy. Highlights here are the frenetic beats of Sound Surrounds, Disco Nection, It does not make sense, Super Go and Still. Check them out at Cartel with Missy G tonight or at the CD release party at the Dud de Lux with another talented local, Ed Muzik tomorrow night. – Vicki Anderson, The Press, 25/7/8

A mixed bag of electronica greeted The Beat last weekend, which began with the electropop goodness of The L.E.D.s who are touring their recent release Still. Warming-up duties in the nicely populated tavern bar at the Dux de Lux on Saturday night was left to the unique musical machinations of Ed Musik, who played a set of 80'ssynth- influenced tunes, conjurih up a bit of dancefloor action. An entertaining crowd pleaseing effort.
The great thing about the L.E.D.s is the way they make music. It's that D.I.Y. approach that we all can appreciate , where you jus get on with the job of making albums and getting them out there, with little fanfare and lots of attention to how it sounds.
In the live arena not much changes, although the fanfare is up a notch, but production wise it was a perfect sounding room on Saturday, as this four-piece gave the fans an excellent timeof pop goodness, sprinkled generously with good samples and sanguine percussion with the hour-long set including a mix of songs from both 2006's We are the L.E.D.s and Still.

Current mood: accomplished
Saturday night arrived with a switch in genre as The Beat headed to the Dux de Lux for electro act the LEDS. Along with local knob twiddlers the Tiger Tones, they put on an enthralling performance for the capacity crowd. Having upped sticks for the capital recently, it was great to see this extremely talented group who use programmed beats as well as a live drummer to produce their own special brand of electro pop. There was many a catchy hook, which kept those gathered bopping happily into the evening. Support act the Tiger Tones will return to the Dux in April for their debut album release on local label Pinacolada Records. -
