PORTER BLOCK RELEASES PUEBLO A GO GO, THIRD FULL LENGTH FOR ENGINE ROOM Recordings

Brooklyn, NY - New York based musician Porter Block releases Pueblo A Go Go his third full-length album for Engine Room Records. Pueblo is the prolific songwriter’s fifth release in four years.

Influenced by the great rock bands of the seventies, the songs of Pueblo were written with a focus on the craft of songwriting, perfecting the lost art of the three-minute song. Joined by his band, Caleb Sherman (bass, keyboards), Garrett Alarcon (guitar) and Steve Holly (drums), the 10 new songs take what Block has done on previous releases and perfects it. The songs follow the basic powerful pop formula, with hooks and harmonies, and paired down production.

Pueblo A Go Go is a haunting trip through the small desert towns of west, viewed through the windshield of a slow moving car. The visuals are vivid and the stories are full of characters that have lost something or are running away, with a poignant theme of loneliness. The title track sets the mood, with its upbeat, but spooky description of abandoned pueblo communities, bartenders and strippers aimlessly walking down a blacktop looking for a long defunct dance club. “Wipe It From Your Eyes” is a sweet sparse story of domestic dispute and unrest, the music is almost a lullaby contrasting with the solemn lyrics, “If it gets any worse, someone’s gonna phone it in.” “True Enough” is a song which firmly sets itself in a southern California landscape where ” the desert sun sits high and heavy on a petrol dripping sky”. And the two star-crossed lovers kiss “beneath a palm next to the meth shack” continuing the blend of a simple country shuffle love song with somewhat disturbing images of modern urban decay.

Pueblo was recorded with vintage gear at Block’s Gowanus Brooklyn studio, The Carriage House. The Carriage House was designed for the comfort of recording and mixing, built to get great sounds and filled with retro equipment, including strips of soundboards instead of a traditional console.

Porter Block will be performing around the East Coast, with upcoming residencies in Brooklyn and Philadelphia. He is already working on his next release which will be an album of songs co-written with other Brooklyn songwriters.

Porter Block, Off Our Shoulders
November 13, 2008

First, I want to say that this is how albums should be made—no joke. The quartet known as Porter Block have produced a well-polished and well-produced piece of work that resonates with a just a great SOUND. The band leased and built up their own studio in Brooklyn where they would be cooped up for about four months working on a new record. The members of Porter Block would surround their own studio with retro items collected through the years and the product is 10 highly enjoyable songs. Apparently having a studio that you can happily call your OWN can be very effective and extremely inspirational when making an album.

I have to say that lead singer Peter Block's vocals are really in tune and right on throughout this record. The harmonies are soothing to the ear and each song adds a perfect blend of melodies. Call me crazy, but I even heard a little of Jacob Dylan-esque tone in Block's vocal style. Also, heard glimpses of Elvis Costello in the way Block sang and annunciated his words.

I enjoyed each and every song on Off Our Shoulders, but especially liked "Lonely Levon". The song seemed to have that slowed-down, bluesy feel and just such a laid-back and cool song. Hearing this track, I would call Porter Block the ideal "Pub-Rock" Band as I was sippin' down a rum and coke at a local bar. In the words of the great Billy Joel, "Now we're all in the mood for a melody and you got us feelin' alright" and yes these "Pub-Rock" men will do just the trick!

I also love the message behind the song, "The Times Between the Good Times" because Porter Block is telling people not to forget about those moments in between the good times. Everyone remembers the good times, the good old days, or those unforgettable memories—whatever you wanna call them—but what happens in the middle of all that is special too. Really makes you stop and think for a second or two, at least I did.

Overall, I loved everything about this album and would highly recommend it to anyone. And if you have a chance to see this band perform on stage, don't miss out because I can imagine with their impeccable studio sound that their live sound is just as impressive. This is our second full length cd and we think you’re gonna like it. We went to Brooklyn, leased and built our own studio, and wrote and recorded the material that comprises the album in one fell swoop! We like focusing on songwriting and arrangements which can be performed live, with a few electric guitars and some nice harmonies. The resulting Off Our Shoulders is a rock record filled with catchy power-pop melodies, harmonies, driving guitars and a powerful back beat. The songs were developed out of simple stories. "All of Who I Am" sounds like a love song to a girl, but really about a Martin Guitar. "Sun Goes Down" was inspired by the famous Howard Cossell line "down goes Frazier" and was written as a radio broadcast of a boxing match. "Happy Everything" came from a holiday card and its overly perky sentiment conjured a cynic’s perspective on the holiday season.

The tracklisting is below and we will be celebrating the release April 10th at the Crash Mansion (NYC) with a big album release show with a limited open bar and free entry! Save the date!

1. Second Wind
2. The Times Between The Good Times
3. List Of Things to Do
4. Lonely Levon
5. Sun Goes Down
6. All Of Who I Am
7. Happy Everything
