Thank you to all that got involved in Artful through October. The idea of mixing Art Exhibition, Live Music and Experimental Activity can either succeed or fail - but buts off to everbody that came...
RESULT! A month festival was made from thin air by the creative cove gatherings that take place at Deptford Arms. Big thanks to 13:53 Magazine family, Blue Light District family, Deptford Arms family, Earwax Radio, Gary Dudman, Matt Finucane, Music Tourist Board posse, New Cross Inn family, Sharing Sheaths, Warren Garland, the venues - especially The Birds Nest and The Albany, and their friends - creative gatherings at Deptford Arms are encouraged to continue... come on board.
With regards to Artful No.3 raising the local profile another step. Yes, for sure. Visitors came from abroad, even. Year on year more bands play this area, a trend set to continue now Amersham has relaunched. The night after The Rakes played in town, was the first Shot By Both Sides at The Birds Nest. At least 20 locally connected bands were at that gathering while down the road at The Albany, there was a sci-fi spectacular happening with One Night [On Earth]. Basically now so much to do that trips to the West End are not necessary. This month, London Lite asked "Is New Cross The New Camden?". Hopefully it just stays somewhere completely different with a more playful and friendly crowd, as a destination for a night out. Anyway, back to Artful last month
Special thanks to Chris Getliffe for the wonderful posters and maps art.
Hats off to the bands for being such stars and coming on board. It's not just about playing a gig then going home. These are tips. Live music with added soul and entertainment. Talent that is in the vanguard not jumping on the band wagon. Many got connected with new contacts, and especially new fans. Most have even stayed in touch, which will make next year even more interesting. Artful artists have that something extra. Watch this space...
Film makers are always welcome. The Blue Light District held a Best Of Party. These DIY Oscars took place at The Fox & Firkin with bean bags, good company and wine aplenty. For the next batch of up and coming video/movie makers check out their monthly night with Urban Minds www.thebluelightdistrict.com - there's some artful007 on YouTube too. Rocklands Massive short film clips by Warren Garland www.youtube.com/user/rocklandsmassive and three minutes of Intergalactic Space Traveller's impression of Deptford Fun City at www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=1EE64A901FC1E788 (Channnel6TV)
www.artfulfestival.com was created by Simon at The Blue Light District. Artful's first proper website. Reports / Reviews / Links / News updates to go up between November and next Artful - everybody was too busy going out and partying to put anything but listings up before now!
13:53 Magazine No.2. is in colour, quite appropriate. Beautiful and highly collectable. www.1353magazine.com
Section Five - (from Shot By Both Sides on 12 October, some beautiful cakes were also made!) Issue 1 (SBBS001) www.myspace.com/sectionfivemag
Gravity Guide - 45,000 copies of South East X guide created by Shuffle Promotions and circulated all across London. Front cover (Greenwich Tunnel - very underground!) by Ann-Marie Mullarkey, listings by The Blue Light District. Next issue January-March www.myspace.com/gravityguidelondon
Earwax Radio created five on-line broadcasts at Artful Mondays. Fittingly ending with a Rocklands anthem, "Lewishambles", by the infectious engaging Mr. Bligh. Their New Cross Inn sessions are monthly sundays. Suggest away to them http://www.wax-music.com
Matt Sargent : Exhibited at Deptford Arms and New Cross Inn. At the launch party for 13:53 Magazine No.2, became even more collectable. In fact art exhibited at both New Cross Inn and Deptford Arms is being purchased. Proper rock n roll gallery action.
Chris Getliffe of Kitchen District Comic gave Artful a visual image for the first time (and lost half of his beard at Rocklands Party 2) - top bloke. www.getliffe.com
The Guild of Further Art, Volume 1, appeared as free copies at Deptford Arms. Fantastic illustrations with music at heart courtesy of http://www.myspace.com/theguildoffurtherart "Dream three sizes too big - even if you fall short, you'll still be further than if you never dared to dream at all". Most artful in outlook, they are...

From : ON & OFF STAGE (Artful007 issue)
Meanwhile on Planet Water; Saturday 13th October @ Artful
Happy First Birthday of NEW CROSS INN, Revamped In Rocklands and 13:53 Magazine No.2 launch party - united.
THE AD : Live on stage The Rank Deluxe + Whiskey Versus Faith + The Chosen Fume & loads more shenanigans and "turns" as befits London's art rock central... Free Entry. THE INFO : 13:53 (art, graphics, photography) Magazine : www.1353magazine.com - "Hello all! We've gate-crashed the New Cross Inn first birthday bash, to bring you a night of film, art and music in collaboration with The Bluelight District and Artful. Issue two is bigger and better than ever- featuring artwork from 13:53 favourites and some new and exciting additions; Patrick Semple, Kasia Trilling, Rod Hunt, Rob Sollis, Biscuit, Peter Denmark, Kate Muross, Owen Phillips, Natalie Ashman, Reed Young, Will Pointer and Jacob Carter with guest interviews from Paddy Walsh and Joe Curran." Theo Szarowicz (art director) / Fiona Slater (editor) In South East London there is a massive emerging arts & music scene in & around the areas of Greenwich, Deptford, New X & Lewisham, which is finally becoming recognised. 13:53 [GMT] was the time the project was conceived. This (beautiful, collectable) publication will introduce you to an eclectic and exciting mix of artists from their expanding collective. Portfolios range from professionally trained artists to local market stall holders that struggle to fund their work. There is opportunity for anybody to be involved in this project whether through sending in photography, illustration, design, words... or suporting the project through spnsorship and inviestment. New Cross Inn of Rocklands - Happy 1st Birthday The Story So Far... Did you hear the one about the artists that turned their imagination to running a bar? That'll be Kate Wolfenden & Tristan Scutt who took over the reins at New Cross Inn last year. They revamped it, relaunched it and made the surreal utopian spirit of "Rocklands" a reality along with the music film series coming together from Digital Sneakers. They started by going round to the other local venues and business and making friends. It's an unworldly way of doing business, but perhaps people were ready for something new as they took the inspiration for what became NXP, to their hearts. In twelve months, NXI has become the new "CBGBs of SE14" (as NME called Paradise Bar), and then some. It's a punky art gallery bar-come-living installation where band members, zines, photographers, artists, students and friends old and new, put up stalls, show visuals, make new contacts and exchange experimental ideas. It's also witnessed some wild'n'wondeful live performances and DJ sets, to say the least. New Cross Inn of Rocklands launched at the end of Artful 006 with X-Party, a living art rock installation - with bands, of course! This summer it featured as a short film by Nicola Pritchard on the digital TV stations and was attended by the music editor of Time Out who was so inspired by what was going on that the magazine ran a four page article (back drops by Matt Sargeant of 13:53, co-incidentally) which compared what is happening to 60s San Francisco. This article previewed 2007 and renewed interest in a geographical location which just gets on with itself. Thanks to New Cross Inn, though, this time round things have stepped up. In February of this New Cross Inn offered free pancakes to local people, inviting them to make friends and ideas. It's too 20th century a concept to be the new marketing (i.e. "cool"), but it was cool as hell that night. The place was packed with non-cynical enthusiasm, resulting in over thirty, sussed London promoters joining the NXI gang and filling the calendar up for the summer that very evening. The growing creative family hanging out on 323 New Cross Road (high percentage of musicians and artists etc) united to create Little Nan JoJo Loves..., a one-day love, peace and music festival this May Bank Holiday. By the people, for the people. South East London's wavelength is based on trust as most of the people making life increasingly attractive do it for love not money. A music-"biz"-based con-man took advantage of this naivity, resulting in the festival being cancelled with four days notice to cut a long, if colourful story short. On the morning of May 1st Not one band was coming to play. Major disappointment, especially as it was done with love for music people and the local community. But, the warm feeling for the Inn among those in the know, is such that by the evening of May 1st, there were over sixty bands who just declared "we're gonna come and play for you, anyway". If anybody believes that the spirit of rock'n'roll is dead then think again. And this is all still underground! May 5th was not only a complete sell-out with bands and their friends/followings partying all day and all night at united venues across New Cross and Deptford, as well as impromptu gigs along the road, and a boost for other local businesses, but was also compared to a continuance of the original Glastonbury Festival vibe. After the cancellation, some supportive media still turned up too, and LOVED it, woohoo. "Rocklands Party. The New Cross Festival: renamed, revamped and a triumph by all accounts." Disorder The day was a turning point. The renewed interest in the potential of the area brought new investment in the venue circuit and put fresh ideas of staging DIY events, mixing in more art with music and venues. And so on. The mark has been made... The alternative, fringe mix of activity around London's South East Bank rises annualy. The Inn has played a massive part in that and has close ties with the arts communities as much as with bands. Costa del Thames (Time Out) is now flavoured with music bars old and new that combine a gallery alongside a stage. Time Out is not wrong. The fresh interest in the borough of Lewisham(bles) has inspired an affordable destination for locals and visitors alike. New ventertainment business has been enticed, even though creative spaces are still being targeted as potential 51st State coffee bars, "development" prospects, etc for richer folk like killing the (poor) goose that lays the golden egg. Life has always had an element of fight-for-your-rights around here. It's what gives added character, slows down gentrification and still earns the local motto (from Deptford Urban Free Festival, late 20th Century) "You Can't Kill The Spirit". Kate and Tristan actually pulled off another successful revamp before their first year was through, The Inn now has a sister venue, Deptford Arms, already SE8's bohemian hub and a friendly neighbour to The Birds Nest and the Albany Theatre. As per the artist/musician/DJs etc staff of New Cross Inn, Deptford Arms (where Squeeze started) people are also The Blue Light District (South East London's fastest growing alternative creative community) and visuals maestro Warren Garland,The Birds Nest is manned by Waks Records and members of Bretton. The staff of most local venues multi-task in some way or other. Like one great big music company, but without the umbrella. In short, the every day people of London's lower east side have used friendliness as the finance to give the Planet's Time Zone a different feel for the last four years and NXI has been a catalyst of this. With a swathe of media, including Financial Times, noting that the borough of Lewisham is indeed, as Time Out Magazine predicted "The Capital's New Capital of Underground Culture". Arts/Alternative special places like the Deptford Town Hall shops (Rubbish & Nasty etc) are - along with the wealth of talent and ideas - the real treasure of this area. Loads of band members and crew, music promoters / artists, writers, photographers and dreamers - the future-makers, regulars decorate the bar... and as for what goes on in here. In the first year alone that Kate and Tristan have been at the helm, some of those heady live performances and partying DJ sets that have graced New Cross Inn include; Fighting Cocks, Party Shank, Twisted Charm, Metronomy, 1984, Pink Grease, The Total Drop, Eddie Temple Morris, Earwax Radio, Officer Kicks, We Smoke Fags, Heath, The Pepys, Whiskey Versus Faith, The Rank Deluxe, 586, Pop Levi, Kunt & The Gang, The Alps, The Veez, Plugs, Babyshambles, Metros, White Man Kamikaze, New Young Pony Club, The Rocks, Nebraska, Blah Blah Blah, Popular Workshop, Bono Must Die, Seeing Scarlet, Ratty Rat Rat, Kiara Scuro, Bolt Action Five, Kalev, Super Nashwan, The Heavy, Guardians Of The Ancient Wisdom, Dexy, Sharing Sheaths, Fatels, The Pistolas, Friends Of The Bride, Talk Taxis, Sports Day Megaphone, Airhammer, Nic Nell, Subliminal Girls... to name just a few. ------------------------------------------- The party on 13th October was a bloody riot! Gawd bless, there was an old-skool nosh buffet, drinking like a thirst epidemic, dancing on chairs, whiskey versus faith gig half on the bar and even the smoking room outside squashed to claustrophobia. It looked like an art punk riot had broken out in bright colours along the New Cross Road. Imagination has no bounds here, people living in Rocklands, Ravelands, Electrolands and even Drinklands (honest! see flyers etc). Whatever planet/dimension the locals come from they have some visions of beauty and a great soundtrack. The HQ of the world's only Music Tourist Board is an inn-clusive place. Long may New Cross Inn's nurture of the chic and the scruffy as equals, reign. Unlike the world on the news, they've proved that unity is the way forward. Bloomin' heck, opposite Docklands, Rocklands is virtually a republic. Power to the people! ON & OFF STAGE artful festival 007

Music from the buzziest bands / djs / clubs, Art, Pirates, Word, Dance, Theatre, Experiment, Cabaret, Photography, Visuals, Fairies, Launches, Film, Installation, Comedy, Imagination, Enthusiasm and romance plus an introduction to Costa del Thames.
A friendly celebration of high quality fresh entertainment, diy chic, exciting ambition. Some events are impromptu, often creating while they are happening. Frankly, it's just a good excuse to party for a month! The non conventional convention of entertainment & exhibition returns for the third year running. Slighly more than a festival, it is inspired by the anti scenes made from bands and artists that are more individual, challenging, aspiring, romantic and charismatic. In short, it is a gathering of talent with SOUL. It's also a positive celebration of London's lower east side (where "no one is doing it for the money" - Time Out) and beyond. Simply because of the thriving, growing, co-promoting community there. Rocklands / Ravelands / South East X / Shire Of Elsewhere / Costa del Thames / South East Bank / Thamesbeat / Jolly Roger's Cove... whatever, it's not on any Planet Earth map - it mainly exists on-line where there is no geography, so is home to anybody on the wavelength. Planet Water is the world where the compass faces south and anything is possible. For this year's event's see NXP Pagea r t f u l"Out-of-the-ordinary festival on London's South East Bank, with cabaret, music, film and more" (Independent On Sunday) "A real D.I.Y. aesthetic, an open minded, open armed love-in, where the welcome mat is open to everything and anyone!... ...it's going to be hot, hot, hot" (Artrocker Magazine) "The cream of up-and-coming talent" (Daily Telegraph) "The most extraordinary Moulin Rouge styled arts festival" (I Like Music.com) "More DIY than B&Q" (NME) "a brilliant programme of gigs featuring a stack of brilliant artists" (CMU Daily) "a whole host of performers that should go on to great things in the future" (Pulse)
Arts Not Arms. Organisers = Playing Class Friends of Planet Water. 31-oct-007 goodbye artful, halloweenArtful No.3 also includes introducing Costa del Thames - affordable real London has a positive, bohemian side.< "The big word of south-east London is "involvement... ...it's not about competition, it's about community". (Lewis Dyer, The Rank Deluxe).
"It's very much an anti-scene. It's about not creating borders or boundaries and finding space for all sorts of..Charlie Beall, Seeing Scarlet).
"I think this area attracts people who are culturally enthusiastic" (Terry Butchery, Sharing Sheaths).
"It brings people together in a really productive way" (Shay, The Veez).
"The difference from other similarly creative neighbourhoods such as, say, Shoreditch, is the spirit in which everyone has entered into their work. It's as inclusive as you can get" (Time Out Magazine).
With affordable accomodation as well as hotels etc the idea of locals and visitors alike, bringing more business to the area by making it somewhere to visit is not that crazy. Greenwich already has tourism, the neighbouring borough of Lewisham offers Alternative Tourism and the Shire Of Elsewhere round the bend of the river is packed with activity, green spaces, 21st century transport, and, especially venues for entertaining and exhibiting, let alone the fringe ethics that are a way of life in an area where the local motto is You Can't Kill The Spirit. With additional thanks to all at the participating venues, plus Creative Lewisham Agency, Goldsmiths S.U., NDC/Fusion, RSVP.co.uk (Docklands supports Rocklands), and the audiences and various media that help Artful to grow.
