If you haven't heard my song "Almost Beautiful", I hope you'll take a listen here on my myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/deborahlombardi

I've decided I'm going to start blogging about what some of my songs mean, to give more insight about what I was thinking when I wrote it. First off, here are the lyrics:

------------------
Darken your lips
Shadow your eyes
Make me look like
I’m out with a prize
Solemnly send
Plain Jane to die
Why be sugar
When you could be spice?
So come on baby glam it up
'Cause you could look so much better
Why don’t you put some makeup on?
'Cause you’re almost perfect, almost beautiful
Softened abuse
Done as advice
You weigh ten pounds
Too much for your height
Progress in pain
To realize
Honesty at
The cost of your pride
So come on baby glam it up
'Cause you could look so much better
Why don’t you put some makeup on?
'Cause you’re almost perfect, almost beautiful
Beauty in all our eyes
Is too vague to define
Air brushed and digitally erasing our minds
Decadent muse
Collecting stares
That you could get
From so many men
Amplified in
A corset, a cast
Wear a thong to
Stick out of your pants
So come on baby glam it up
'Cause you could look so much better
Why don’t you put some makeup on?
'Cause you’re almost perfect…
Oh come on baby glam it up
'Cause you could look so much better
Why don’t you put some makeup on?
'Cause you’re almost perfect, almost beautiful
---------------

It's obvious from the lyrics that I wrote that song about the images and expectations placed on females in our society. It's not so much a complaint as much as an observation, and I voice it with sarcasm. I sing it as if telling a woman she needs to put on makeup or lose weight or dress a certain way, but it's with irony because it's all based on things I've either heard told to me or to other women. In mirroring the words back to the offender, I'm basically using their words against them to show how horrible they sound. It's sort of like Sheryl Crow's song "What I Can Do For You" off her first album, in which she's singing the sexist words men say to women.

Not to turn this blog into a feminist lecture, but this song has always been close to my heart and one of the most honest lyrically. I'd also ike to point out that it's not necessary pointed just at men as the offenders, but also at women in our society, and even ourselves. The celebrity and fashion magazines bombard us with unrealistic images, constant reminders of diets and how to lose that last stubborn 10 pounds, and belittle any celebrity that dare not starve themselves that week. Yet who is writing most of the content of these magazines? Women. And who is buying these magazines? Women. And it's women who are always buying into the thought that they're just not perfect enough, that they're "almost beautiful". How many women, including myself, are constantly watching their weight and feeling guilty when we indulge...yet how many men do I know that are saying "man I wish I didn't have that donut, it's going to go straight to my thighs"?

So in fact the song voices the words of multiple offenders: 1) the media, 2) sexist men, and 3) women putting themselves down.

I really don't take a social or political stance in my music, but "Almost Beautiful" is probably the closest I've come to it so far...hopefully it's both entertaining and insightful enough to make at least a small positive impact on those who hear it.

Hi there & Happy New Year!

I'm starting off the year being a part of an exciting new event in Long Island, NY. On Sunday, January 18th at the Nutty Irishman in Bayshore, I will be at CULTUReXPLOSION, a music and arts convention/flea market. While I may not be performing, I will be doing something equally as exciting - I will be raising funds for the American Cancer Society!

I am giving away free CDs and posters in return for donations to this worthy cause, so if you're in the area, please stop by anytime - the event starts at 2pm and continues through the night. I will probably be there until at least 8pm.

Admission is only $10 (ages 21 and over please), and since the next day is Martin Luther King Jr Day, many people have off work the next day... so we're expecting a big turnout. Can't get the party started without you though, so hope to see you there!

The Nutty Irishman is located at 60 East Main Street, Bayshore, NY.

Musically yours,
Deborah Lombardi
